How did my father die?

A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father.

So my son looks at me with this smile... thinking WTH? Did Ben just flat out lie to Luke? (He saw the prequel movies first.)

What about Han Solo harping on the Force being BS and all? Wouldn't Chewy have made doggy sounds and told him about his best buddy Yoda during the Clone Wars? Or does Han Solo just pretend to understand what Chewy is saying?

I cite this as evidence.

 

Luke - You told me that Darth Vader betrayed and murdered my father.

Obi-Wan - Your father was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true. From a certain point of view.

Luke - A certain point of view?

Obi-Wan - Luke you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view. Anakin was a good friend of mine. When I first met him, your father was already a great pilot. But I was amazed how strongly the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi. I thought that I could instruct him just as well as Yoda. I was wrong.

I love how Obi-Wan changes the subject to "great pilot", "Force was with him", "train him as a Jedi", and so on.

Point of view my ass. Yoda knew that the fact that Vader was Luke's father was hidden from Luke.

Luke - Master Yoda, is Darth Vader my father?

Yoda - Rest I need. Yes. Rest.

Luke - Yoda, I must know.

Yoda - Your father he is. Told you, did he? Unexpected this is. And unfortunate.

Luke - Unfortunate that I know the truth?

Yoda - No! Unfortunate that you rushed to face him. That incomplete was your training. That not ready for the burden were you.

The idea is that Obi-Wan and Yoda where holding back so that the hormone ridden young Luke would not rush to his doom.

It was a forced plot. While indeed the Jedi where exterminated, force sensitive beings were not. Raw material for great Jedi (and Sith Lords) could be found across the galaxy (or galaxies). Obi-Wan and Yoda could have pursued seeding a new generation of Jedi w/o the need of relying on Luke or Leia as their last hope.

One of my favorite lines is this one though:

Vader - Luke. Help me take. This mask off.

Luke - But you'll die.

Vader - Nothing. Can stop that now. Just for once. Let me. Look on you with my own eyes.

I have a lot of lines from Vader memorized. But most of them are as a bad ass leader that means business. The one above is different.

 

It was pretty obvious to me Lucas DID NOT have it all figured out at this point in time. I envisioned an ultimate showdown where Luke would avenge his father, Shaw Brothers Kung Fu movie style.

This is what I've been doing around the house lately:

My son and I re-enacted this in front of my daughter while she was on the phone to embarrass her. Tweens get embarrassed so easily, so it's super fun. I've threatened to dress up as Chinese granpa and drop her off at school in a minivan.
