I use a Roku 2 or 3 to stream content from Comedy Central, NBC and the like. The content providers pepper the shows with commercials that are literally 10 db higher than the show. Unfortunately, my Plasma tv sends audio via Toslink to dac then on to small amp. No remote or mute on amp.

Are there any tv streaming boxes that have a way to deal with this ?

Rokus Ultra model has night listening mode which has been described as a slight compression to audio making soft sounds louder and louder sounds softer, but supposedly is not effective on these super loud commercials.

Any ideas other than perhaps buying a shit cheap av receiver and hitting mute all the effin time?

that's a possibility. I am eyeing a Pioneer Elite A-20 amp with remote. A'zon has it down to $199 now that Pioneer sold almost all their company to Onkyo. Guessing it might be disc. At least it has a remote and I could hit mute, haha. @Cspirou thought about you while enjoying my keto styled flat iron steak, asparagus and hollandiase last night, yum.

Do you have volume normalization on your tv? Not sure if that works for toslink or at all but might be worth a shot.

No the spdif out via toslink kills any audio effects. And from what I read it is only a marginal improvement.

From all I read today it is a big problem with pretty much any streaming device. I guess I will have to bite the bullet and get me a remote with mute button, argh!

The mute button on the Onkyo remote works, ahhhhh, relief.

Not sure it sounds as good or loud as my chip amp, but the remote feature is worth giving up a tiny bit of sq.
