I installed the mod last week. I'm a bit confused since I don't really hear that much of a difference, after 10 hours of listening up until now. This is how I installed it: http://imgur.com/rla9I7z

    Hi,

Hard to say from your pic. As long as you pushed the circle of paper at the bottom and the black creatology ring flush to the top, it's all good.

Remember we're talking about a 3db reduction around 5-6khz. It's kinda significant but small. A lot of people measured and heard it as a significant change. A few others even found it killed the treble and another few didn't find the change significant enough. Different ears, different impressions.

To my ears it reduces the hardness/glare by a significant margin. Significant enough to let me enjoy a hd800 off a random solid-state amplifier. But its still a small change and my hd800 still sounds like a hd800.

Please excuse the total failure to volume match, but it certainly took the spike down nicely on mine:

..though even before measuring, I could hear that it was less "hot" and brittle-sounding. It's not a night and day change, just a reduction of a very specific area. I'd not want to use the 800 without it, now.

Finally found the perfect box to protect SDR during their travel...

    SDR_Box.jpg

Took a year for my brain to wake up and find the good idea.

Thus far, all letters was more or less squeashed during the travel. it didn't affect the way the mod works but it was not "clean" enough to deliver squeashed SDR. This travel case for contact lenses is perfect. :)

Thank you for your response. I figure I need more listening time and more demoing with different styles of music. Work has been busy and I have had less time than I had preferred listening to them.

I have been listening via a Schiit Modi2u and a Vali2 with a Phillips PCC88 tube, and I have no other amps atm. I imagine it might be so the tube already softens the treble. Sadly I don't have lots of tubes laying around to roll the sound and see the effect. It's good to know I should be less prohibited to try out the HD800 with SS amps though! I guess extensive amp demoing is in order during the next headphone meet in my area, or I have to check it out in a store with a couple different amps.

I don't feel any remorse or regret buying it though! I found the experience educational and a bit thrilling. It does not happen often I open up such an expensive headphone! For example, I have extensive experience with Grado modding: Last year I built a GS1000 replica with Symphones V6 drivers. It used to be a SR60e! (www.symphones.com):

I finally got round to installing the the SDR @sorrodje sent me. To be honest, I never found the 6khz peak so objectionable but with the SDR in place I can listen to pretty much anything, very smooth experience.

What I like most with this mod is what it doesn't do. It commits no sins. I am messing around with other mods for which there is always a trade-off. The SDR by contrast does what it's intended to do without deteriorating any of the technicalities. Thanks, @sorrodje!

I got my SDR mod installed and find the difference to be significant and very favorable. I finally like these cans - in fact I like them quite a lot. I also direct wired a good balanced cable at the same time while I had them apart. It is incredible how small the wires are between the driver and the phone jacks. If there was a sonic impact from this, I am unable to separate it from the SDR mod done at the same time. I also plan to try the rug liner mod and the cork ring and trapezoid to see what effect they have, however I am quite satisfied where it is now.

Many thanks @sorrodje for the parts and instructions.

I'd be very interested to see measurements after a year of usage to assess durability. Reading about the Anxaxilus mod got me interested in modding, until I saw Tyll's newer measurements in the HD800S review. Where they were now shown to be making things much worse.

I expect being behind the dust guard and stock liner will mitigates this to a point.

I just performed this mod, thought I'd record a video to help others with the hardest part - getting the fabric off the driver housing:

If you pull the fabric back slowly enough, the glue will detach from the fabric and stay on the driver frame. In the video you can see how slow I'm pulling, and how the glue just pops off the fabric and stays intact on the frame. This makes it easy to re-attach. Hope it helps someone out there.

I guess I'm a bit late to the party, but if possible I'd like to buy a pair of the SDRs, please!

I just received and installed the resonator, and it made a (subjectively) *huge* difference. I'm running my HD800's out of my Asgard 2 (until I can decide on Vali vs. Valhalla...) and the peak just made most of the music I listen to unbearable. The resonator fixed that. Thanks for all the work you put into this @sorrodje!

Thank you Sorrodje! I installed my Super Dupont Resonator mods today! Very pleased with the result. Sounds better and measures better. 3 db gone from the 6k peak, and a few db filled into the 4k dip. Great work!

Nice to see the mod still works as promised a year and a half after release.

Seems it lasts longer than a lot of new "best-world-headphone" lol.

Oh hell yes. I was enjoying my HD800 without bleeding only yesterday. It's good stuff- I still think SDR modded HD800 takes EQ better than HD800S, too- fixing the treble spike without that extra bass distortion is ideal. You're a bit of a hero for this one.

Also, you can pick up very nice used HD800 for a lot cheaper :)

Amazing , i installed the mod today and can't stop listening.
Please note that i was huge fan of HD800 stock but now the experience is absolutely perfect.
SDR Modded HD800 is in my opinion the best tuned headphone out there.
Messier Sorrodje congratulations you should be hired as consultant by Sennheiser.

Really excited to see this has been released! I don't even own an HD 800 but I'm still going to purchase a pair of these for my Future HD 800 purchase lol! Maybe I can finally score a sweet Black Friday Deal on a new pair AND just install this easy mod my self. An skip having to find a good modded Second hand HD 800
