I also find the alcohol has the effect of making the music more interesting and rounding off the rough edges a bit.

Better quality alcohol doesn't have a linear effect on SQ though.

    ;)

That's effin' brilliant! Totally agree. Some of my best writing has been done at 35K feet after a few glasses of bad airline wine, balanced right on that razor's edge...

    Cheers and thanks for sharing

Here is one kick-butt, take names, no apologies, system that will be my desktop reference for the foreseeable future:

    20170118 SU-1 - Modi MB - Saga - Jotunheim Stack.png.jpg

Here is the component list for the complete system, including SW I find contributing a significant portion to the overall system synergy:

    20170118 Headphone System List SU-1 - Modi MB - Saga - Jotunheim.png

The level of auditory immersion is exceptionally high with this setup, provided the source material was recorded and mastered without crushing the details out of the finished product.

Great info, Bob! What do you feel the saga brings to the table?

Did you do any kind of tube rolling for Saga?

    Thank-you.

    Facts:
It brings multiple inputs, selectable passive attenuator / active buffer, a glowing 6SN7, precise and repeatable attenuation.

    Personal Opinion Ahead:
To my ears the Saga's active 6SN7 buffer offers a silent buffer stage with a slightly euphonic presentation. This counters a slight hardness observed with the jotunheim on some recordings in my collection. Additionally it adds a bit of dimension. Percussion especially, sounds more dimensional and effortless with the combination. As examples, listen to any track from the Contemporary Records Story collection disc 3. Gary Stroutsos playing ancient wooden instruments is amazing. I heard him play these instruments in person at Bake's Place. Very hard to record. Even harder to properly render on a playback system.

Not yet. A few current production tubes inbound.

Have you experimented with using, then not using the PRT, with the Saga in the system yet?
I would suspect it makes an even greater impact upon the over all SQ, than w/o the tube in the circuit.

Not yet. Currently just kicking back and enjoying another all too brief trip through a portion the library, some familiar and some not heard in a long while.

That in and of itself is a good sign.
Where actually listening and enjoying music takes preference over analyzation.

The reason I asked about it is because when you run both channels in a dual triode tube, some of the cross talk between channels tends to cancel.
This usually has sonic advantages, especially in the mid range where the tube's magic happens.

Stereophile comments don't shock me. The Schiit model is the antithesis of Stereophile ethos (direct to consumer, value based pricing) and their success is no doubt troubling to many of the mags advertisers. Instead of engaging in a tit for tat exchange, best medicine is to keep doing what they are doing. Can't wait for products like "Manhattan" to further disrupt the status quo.

Here is the desktop reference system moved up another level of performance, although at the expense of twice the cost:
    20170206 Dante unDaes-O MC-3+USB - Bifrost MB - Saga - Jotunheim - HD800 small.png.jpg

    20170206 HP Sys List Dante unDaes-O - MC-3+USB - Bifrost MB - Saga - Jotunheim - HD800.png

    20170206 Dante unDaes-O MC-3+USB - Bifrost MB - Saga - Jotunheim - HD800 cables small.png.jpg

    Notes about this system:
    1. Dante ethernet solution avoids all the USB de-crapification efforts. Inherent galvanic isolation, well written ASIO driver. Bonus that it can play over standard ethernet, though managed ethernet switches with QoS configuration are highly recommended for shared network traffic.
    2. Mutec MC-3+USB (USB not used) reduces audio clock jitter with most noticeable effect in impact of transient low frequency events. Connected input AES/EBU from unDaes-O, output SPDIF to Bifrost MB.
    3. PSVane 6SN7 sounds more open, dynamic to my ears than the OTK 6H8C supplied with the SAGA
    4. HD800 used has Anaxilus MOD, direct cable connection with custom cable, acquired from @Mikoss for a great price. That shown in the table is for a new HD800 from Amazon on the date of this post.
    5. RCA cables have a shielding scheme that makes some sense, using good cable and not horribly expensive, though I have not tested them for EMI performance comparison with other RCA cables such as PYST.
    6. Contrary to popular opinion, Bifrost MB is not dead. While I to am impressed with the Modi MB and will continue to listen to mine, BiMB offers a lower noise floor, lower jitter and greater resolution than MoMB. These are both audible and measurable. Other attributes of sound quality differences between the MoMB and BiMB have been discussed extensively elsewhere.

As always, YMMV, void where prohibited by strong alternate preferential opinions, etc.

Interesting - mutec as a reclocker is the one thing I'm thinking of adding to my system, and the fact you consider it worthy of inclusion here is making me want to try it more.

I am on the process of building the system just like you, except using Gumby and Mjo2. Any comparison with other products with Dante interfaces? (Rednet etc)

Post updated to include picture of rear cables. Several notes. The AES/EBU XLR digital cable was inadvertently left off the list. That is now fixed. In this picture you will see Silver Sonics in place of one of the WBC cables. Still evaluating several types of cables with different shielding characteristics.

Also have Rednet D16 in the lab. Has considerably more channels and features useful for pro-aucio, installed sound, acoustic labs, etc. Several of us setup A/B comparison with the ability to switch between digital streams without a lot of fuss. We concluded we could not discern a difference in the time we had for comparisons. D16 will go to 192K whereas the unDaes-O is limited to 96K. With the Schiit MB DACs I find myself no longer acquiring new High Resolution albums consistantly amazed at how much 44x16 PCM has to offer when well recorded and mastered.

@atomicbob would you still take this setup with an HD650, or do you prefer your previous setup with it? Also, any particular reason for putting those foam (felt?) in your stack?
