Yo Yo Ma is the Wynton Marsalis of classical music.

To me his Silk Road stuff is his best work.

For crossover stuff I think yo yo ma is really good.

I actually quite startled because the opening chord is the same as elgar cello concerto...with jacky dupre's first chord.....as well as this....

We went from DAPs to cellos and J.S. Bach.

    Great read.

Can we include people who move around a lot while they perform (Joshua Bell)?

As much as we harp on them, musicians such as Yo Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman are, for most people, introductions to "classical" music for the public. They have probably inspired many young children to pick up violins or cellos and become musicians. People who invest in learning about classical music eventually move on and branch out to find other artists who better fit their developing tastes. In terms of being an introduction to the violin and cello, Perlman and Ma are not bad. Just think about the present. There is going to be a generation that grows up associating the violin with Lindsey Sterling! Not that there is anything wrong with what she does, but as a violinist it kind of hurts me to think of the first name people associating with the violin transitioning from such greats as Heifetz and Oistrakh to pop artists like Sterling.

On a side note, in contrast to the stories told about Itzhak Perlman, I have heard nothing but good things about Yo Yo Ma. The Silk Road ensemble came to Detroit for an education program, and Yo Yo Ma was such a nice person. He created a very relaxed atmosphere and engaged with all the students. He took time to take pictures with students, and he actually let my friend play his cello (both of us had been asked to play with the Silk Road ensemble for the event, so my friend was not just a random person asking to try his multi-million dollar instrument). At the end, he gave us his own personal tickets to the Silk Road ensemble performance that night in Orchestra Hall. Say what you will about his play style, but I can't deny that he is a really good person.

I've had the privilege of watching Yo Yo Ma play the Elgar in concert recently. Even though his technique might be considered unorthodox, his musicality and musicianship is impeccable. If I'm not mistaken he was playing Du Pre's Davidoff strad. If you listen to Du Pre's recording she is a lot more 'aggressive' and impassioned in her rendition. Yo Yo Ma is gentler but still manages to convey the spectrum of emotions formidably. Intonation and articulation of notes were spot on, and it was very impressive to see him feeling the music as well, on stage. He came back on stage for 2 encores, and he playfully asked to borrow the cello section leader's cello for the encore performance. You could tell that he was a nice guy from the way he was well received not just with the audience but with the orchestra as well. Very cool.

I would love to catch him in concert again, given the opportunity.

If we're having a "Faces musicians make" competition, I have a submission for the Pianist category:

Also I have a resting bitch face in general, and apparently when I'm focusing on a piano piece it looks like I'm trying to garrote the poor thing.

I got no problem with people making faces while playing.

I don't find Yo Yo's tone really pleasing. It seems a bit.. nasally or something to me. Not what i imagine when I think of pleasant traditional cello tone.

We've been talking about performers on classical world, but I think the best face-maker is this woman.

If you were wearing that strange breast constrictor, you'd look like that.

(Assuming you had breasts, of course).

In the classical music of my corner of the world there are some who wave their arms around to excess --- and some that don't seem to be able to sing a note without pointing their nose to an imaginary scale in front of their face. Too much fuss; too little music. I avoid their concerts. Unless they do happen to be really good. How much nonsense I can put up is actually a sliding scale depending on how good the music is. But even then, there are limits.

    You're an ex-pat (I believe), so your'e kind-of "required" to "get" this ...

Perhaps less "moist" and more "fire" but you get the idea ...

Not sure. I left the work place.... where I... (taking my time) worked... in the work place... (with women)

...quite a long time ago, and subsequently emigrated. Or... immigrated (sets fire to underpants) from my current point of view.

So I'm a bit old for that Dragon's Den stuff, although not so old I could not recognise it.

Look, can you just give me the 400k?

    Or, well, 400 "K"s at least ..

    ... I won't spend them all at once :)

I think it is moister to be an immigrant. "Ex-pat" gives me a mental picture of either someone on a work placement, or somebody who lives in among a colony of their own kind. Like a bunch of Brits in Spain with their pubs and fish'n'chips shops. Although I wouldn't mind a transplanted chippy, my social life is 100% local. Maybe I'm the opposite of a coconut: I may still be white on the outside, but the inside is developing shades of brown. Can't help it. Just happens. Just a pity I'm such a thick dumbo when it comes to learning the language.

    But hey, Cellos... :D

Opposite of a coconut? So coconuts migrate? Can you confirm this? Did you travel by swallow or other bird?
