    Ahhh....

Bruckner 5th symphony final movement - the last 6 minutes. I use Gunter Wand's recording with NDR orchestra.

The brass (low mids) basically take over during the last minutes and subdue the violins (upper mids) especially heard on the left channel.

On headphones with recessed upper mids (i.e. most) the violins can barely be heard. On headphones wih good tuning (HD650, SR009, Utopia, Andromeda) the violins are really there, present as if trying to make their mark against their louder brass brethren. This is the piece that made me chuck the HD800S.

The whole movement is also a great one to test soundstage, imaging, bass (first minutes) and clarity.

You need to listen to the whole symphony several times first in order to process the sound rather than the music. There is so much musical information that will initially overwhelm you. You might become a Bruckner fan like me in the mean time. ;)

Yes, to clarify, I'm mostly interested in it for the musical merit primarily- for the sheer enjoyment of it. Doubtless it will come into its own as a test recording once I am suitably familiar with it :)

Thank you for pleasingly specific answer, I shall have to do a little shopping!

Then you could start with Bruckner 4th (Wand) or 7th (Wand and NDR or Herbert von Karayan with VPO 1989) as these are more approachable. Unless you are a bit OCD like me and have to start from Bruckner 1st and slowly move to his 9th. (We're way off topic now, aren't we?!)

It was a tough competition. He narrowly beat out Young Jeezy for it.

I'm clearly very very late to this thread and someone might have pointed this out (but I can't be bothered reading 6 pages). But the peace price has a Norwegian committee, I'll blame them for the price given to Obama, this however is a Swedish f**k up. The committee is called "De Aderton" which basically is 16th century Swedish for "The eighteen" and they are notorious for being morons, and cunts. They were initially intended to be 20 but switched it up for the sole reason of "De Aderton" sounding fancier.

    Super irrelevant low SNR note:

This squad of bastards were created by King Gustaf III (before Alfred Nobel even existed) a Swedish king more interested in France than Sweden and someone who actively tried to prevent the French revolution as well as reinstate another similar regime in France after the revolution. Despite this he was the first head of state to acknowledge USA as a newborn state following the American revolution. According to my limited understanding of history: the worst king we've ever had. Alfred please... Why would you give these bastards the power to decide the Nobel prize in literature winners?

Eh... right, my initial point was the peace prize is Norways fault.

Oh lord. I am about to explode in laughter.

Fine. They can give Dylan whatever they want. I'm wholly at peace with it now.

I can be a bit obsessive, but I'm just going to jump in with the fifth, as I enjoyed what I heard. I'll live with it a bit, listen, let it unpack itself in my brain, and see how I feel. That's my usual approach to getting to grips with music that doesn't instantly roll over on demand; it avoids the feeling that the process is somehow worthy or a chore :)

(Yes, we're way OT now, but then this thread has become a little mutant, anyway.)

I nominate Quentin Tarantino. This dialogue is deserving of an award. "Like A Virgin"

So apparently Mr D. hasn't formally acknowledged his Golden Schlong award yet. More or less total radio silence. And "The Eighteen" are apparently disappointed in their childhood hero for not immediately falling on his knees and thanking them with tears of joy running down his cheeks, or something along those lines. The plot thickens.

Apparently, he hasn't even mentioned it. Informally. For all we know, he might not have even noticed it.

    Beats "Oh christ!"

Was there supposed to be an IMG there? Is it just my browser keeping it from me?

Yes, ironically, it's also in your reply as a thumbnail. Maybe aliens or your ISP don't want you seeing twitter content. I've re-hosted it at imgur now, try this:

I thought the BBC link was something out of The Onion news.

Sometimes I've questioned if I really deserve the "friend" tag. Then I see that I've helped create this masterpiece by providing an image and history on "de Aderton" and I know that I've made this forum a better place...Hell, I might even deserve a Nobel prize.

Oh man, I had to put what I read on the BBC into a visual. The quoted comments seemed so fitting for the group. I did try to associate the quotes with the appropriate faces. Notice that the guy who didn't vote for him is too old to be an ex-hippie, and the most self-important looking guy was the most outraged.

Nope. All I see is one IMG tag. To quote the guy on the left, Waah!

But thanks, I see the new one.
