Even if you could get a real 24 bits at the DA stage, the AD stage is not likely to ever get you anything better then 18-19 bits of resolution. Better to do the best you can with the bits you have then just scale up to 64bit/1GHz audio.

Agree with all that :D -- just goading Mike a bit. It's always fun to read about his thoughts on Dacs.

I remember reading a thought experiment on how to record a meaningful 20th or 21st bit (it's been a while).

IIRC it included the kind of whole-room suspensions used by facilities that calibrate hyper-accurate scientific and industrial scales to isolate from traffic and low-scale earthquakes, you had to pipe in light via fiber as there's just no local method quiet enough, there were no water pipes, no air system (so the imaginary artist technically started suffocating when the door was shut to record) and - at least at the time - while mics sensitive enough existed nobody had built a power supply quiet enough.

How to keep that expensive bit "alive" through the mixing process was left as an exercise for the reader.

I like to imagine it as something like Magneto's prison, but with thick-ass ultra-sound-proof walls and floors.

Someone really needs to build one, then we can record "jazz at the pawnshop XXXVII" inside it.

My Gungnir MB was ordered on 3/12/18 and was shipped on 3/16/18. When it arrives, I’ll post the Serial Number. Not sure if the S/N will tell us anything...

(BTW, this is my first post!)

Welcome. While the facts are true, the conclusion was facetious. I have no reason to believe the s/n means anything.

That pic cracks me up every time I look at it. Gungnir Multibit has this shit-eating grin. He's just like "Hey Pokey, check out this righteous bud!" Pokey is in shock.

It looks like some sort of cabbage -leaf preparation to me. But perhaps that's what these guys get off on.

I don't know these characters. The one called "Pokey" seems pretty out-of-it already. He's even got wobbly, bent front legs. And super-small pupils. Doubt that he's going to be standing up much longer...

So here is my catch-up post (transparent) for today for which the topics are: life is what goes on between audio; karma; and finally, a hint. I promise a less noisy post next time.

So, a little bit of life – it all started out with a toothache in mid January. Since I am of course, superman, I ignored it sure it would go away which it did after a week or so. On January 31, all of this schitt started floating in one eye, which turned out to be the torn retina, which after repair and slowly improving vision left me ready to come back roaring to work until the toothache came back. I then started taking the antibiotics that the dentist gave me for my last toothache last century or so. I soon ran a fever and turned bright red from head to toe only to discover all of my skin was sloughing off, a reaction apparently to the antibiotics. I went to the doc and they put me in the hospital until I had grown back skin. Hurt like hell. I got out on Valentine’s Day and I was catching up for the upcoming release when my wife fell down and couldn’t get up without massive amounts of back pain – couldn’t walk. Took her to the Doc and he gave her stupid strong pain pills and told her to go home. She got worse and worse, I was her caregiver (man do I suck at that) and she hates drugs, so we took her to the hospital, they checked her out, MRI’d her and they told her something like her spinal cord was OK, but three of her discs had to come out or be reworked or something even more painful. She went to another my doc who gave non addictive liquid medicine which worked and two weeks later she is walking into my orthopods office who rebuilt my neck who is telling her to wait for surgery until she really needs it. Then I get the flu – then I give it to her. Not a sympathy story – sympathy is between schiit and syphillis in the dictionary. We’re fine – well, almost. I went back to the dentist and I need two implants, bone grafts, and some other fiscally and physically schiit that hurts. Two kilo bucks.

Now a little bit of Karma. Several years ago my friend Phil Huckstable had a round of bad hemorrhoids and went to the hospital overnight to get them surgically removed. I couldn’t wait to visit him with a box of hot sauces, peppers, jellies, cooking pastes, etc. full of megascoville units; the absolute hottest stuff I could find. That would keep hunger at bay while he was sitting on his donut. Hah! Well, it turns out I have to go to the hospital overnight myself the week after next. Exactly what for, well, yeah, shucks, f**k. (Tonsils?) No smart comments or I will upload photos. So I may be sporadically around for a bit more time.

Finally, a hint what is coming very soon from me is something I said I could/would never do. More also from Jason.

    Portable DAC?

A streamer/network player would definitely be cool, but don't know how likely.
