So, I received two "dislikes" for my post this morning. What have I done wrong?

Imagine you were in an academic environment and you had to stand up and either ask a question to further your or others' understanding of something, that isn't already in the textbook, or to share your findings with others in the hopes of increasing everyone's knowledge on the subject.

Now imagine if instead you gave them a status update on when your new textbooks were going to arrive and how you were going to protect the covers with my little pony printed wrapping.

SBAF is a bit different to other forums. In the above analogy the former is the main forum, the latter is for profile posts, and checking your textbook before asking a question is the search function.

Since not everyone deserves an actual full thread poking fun at them, I am parking this thread here to catch random posts that don't really belong anywhere else.

Don't worry too much about dislikes. They are meaningless unless they continue and completely outweigh likes over time.

If you read these threads you'll see what you did wrong:

    http://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/must-read-for-new-members.3/
    http://www.superbestaudiofriends.or...-n-ratio-month-ten-thoughts.4829/#post-154590

And honestly, I don't personally think it's a problem to say that you have something on the way and will provide impressions. People are just being dumb.

To piggyback a little bit, don't clog up the forum with random posts. Wait to hit "post" until you have content that's meaningfully useful for others to consume.

Think of it this way: we get many thousands of visitors every month. If each spends 5-10 seconds reading your post, you've wasted hours of time in aggregate. Over the course of months as the thread grows and people come across it organically through search, it's days of human life of strangers that you've wasted with your personal expression of excitement as they crawl through the chaff to get to the meaningful content in that thread. This kind of thing belongs as a profile post, not in any of the main forums.

I'd also ditch the contact info in your signature line. More security advice the SBAF advice...

edit - looks like someone beat me to the punch on that one

Actually I would rather he not post anything until he's ready to provide his impressions of the gear. The former comes across as being way too excited that he bought something and can't wait to tell everyone he has it.

    1) When you posted "My black Bifrost Multibit is in transit. ..." I understood your anticipation. I also knew it would not go over well. The biggest problem with this sort of post, as I see it, is it can spread if people let it. You can see at https://www.head-fi.org/ - thread after thread of post after post of people writing about ordering things. That is nothing but a big mess.

    2) "Bonus Guideline: Caring about your "likes" or "trophies" is a ban-able offense." (source)
As I read it, that goes for "dislikes" as well. So your asking "So, I received two "dislikes" for my post this morning. What have I done wrong?" will bring more dislikes.

My advice is to read the threads for new members already suggested. And don't take the dislikes personally. People are not disliking you, they are disliking the two posts I described above. Before you know it you will begin to understand the culture here and find that there is a wealth of great information and a lot of helpful people. I hope you stick it out. It is worth it.

Yeah, I saw this coming too. But I think it's bullshit. The purpose of dislikes is to discourage unwanted behaviour. If someone honestly doesn't know what he did wrong, then foisting a bunch more dislikes on him to chase him off is just dick waving.

(Just to be clear, I do think the rest of this thread was helpful. It's only the second round of dislikes I'm objecting to.)

While some of this is timing (see the "low noise" banner up top), this community typically dislikes gear announcements from new members.

Read more, especially the topic linked by the "new members" banner, and then plan more thoughtful contributions going forward. A few dislikes won't ruin your stay here, but deliberate and frequent rule violations sure will.

Not to sound elitist, but your posts should advance discussion in a meaningful way. The way to do that and establish your credibility is through decent writing, new ideas, and/or proper frames of reference.

Put gear announcements in your status. Someone might give you a digital high five and engage in some inane conversation about what you bought. You probably won't get any dislikes unless you mention serial numbers or bought ultrasones.

    @Mike Rife

Don't sweat it. You've probably gotten the message now that a small army of rabid wolves have delivered it. In your shoes I'd hit reset and just enjoy the forum now that you know more. The locals are terrifying until you learn that they're just opinionated with an average EQ of someone moderately on the spectrum.

I don't know if OP was purposefully trying to reference The Talking Heads but every single time I see this thread title Once in a Lifetime pops into my head (I wanted this to start at 2:27 but it's not).
