So, I have seen specific works throughout this sub section like Star Wars(technically fantasy), various movies, television shows, books or video games threads that involve Science Fiction, but no Science Fiction thread. Thought I would start one.

I recently got really into "The Expanse" on Syfy, binge watched it and then started to binge the book series it was based on. I jest about Thomas Jane, a.k.a. space punisher, but it really is very good. The concept of the series so far, I am on season two of the show and book three of novels, is very interesting. We aren't technologically more advanced than we are today, we have not discovered faster than light travel, teleportation, cryogenic hibernation or any of the things we would really need to expand out of the solar system. Unlike Star Trek, we also haven't moved past our human tendency to fall back toward violence, our wonderful ability to lump groups together and stereotype them or our own short sightedness. It is the first new piece of Sci Fi to grab my attention in a while.

Past favorites for television include the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, Stargate Sg-1 and Atlantis, Star Trek Enterprise, the original Star Trek, Firefly, and Farscape. My book list would be absurdly long, think Dick, Asimov, Heinlein, Card, etc and movies are about the same…not sure if Alien is Science Fiction or Horror but really looking forward to Danny McBride's evisceration next month.

Chime in and let's have fun with it.

Looked it up. Have not had time yet, but it looks very interesting and I've never heard of it so…awesome. In the meantime, I did finish book 6 of The Expanse series, the next one isn't released until Dec. Honestly, they are so character driven the author could probably retire by just going on, and on, and on until the characters are literally too old.

Iceman, I took your advice and finally got around to watching Black Mirror. I binge watched it. It is very good, but the content itself is terrifying. Most of the episodes center around science gone mad in a way that we could really see happen in our lifetime. No spaceships, aliens or the like. Heck, they center around social media driven to the extreme in several episodes, a companion robot…really most of these things I could see happening. It's pure genius. Thanks a lot for pointing it out.

Black Mirror is amazing, some episodes still haunt me.

Westworld... different but very very good.
Also Mr Robot for cyber-punkish sci-fi. Very good execution.

For books, Three Body Problem is a complete head-trip. Written by a Chinese SciFi author (I previously hadn't known this to be a thing) so the writing style comes across very differently and starts off in the Cultural Revolution, then launches into one of the most original set of ideas I've come across in perhaps a decade.

Question about TV shows: Has there been anything made as lightly-heartedly entertaining and engaging as Firefly? I still rate that as one of the best series ever made.
