Any opinions on running a tube preamp into a solid state headphone amp?

There are millions of opinions. You should probably start with the preamp and amp you're thinking of.

A tube pre with SS amp is a classic, and I mean Enid Lumley classic and probably way before her, method of having the snap and drive of an SS amp with the ameliorating (hopefully) warmth of tubes. As zerodeefex says, it's first dependent on the synergy of the equipment, and then on how you're hearing it. The combo you're thinking of certainly sounds interesting, hopefully you'll report back with a listening evaluation.;)

I got the idea from this video. Zach is using the CSP3 to preamp another Decware tube amp but I wondered what effect it would have on a powerful solid state.

Skip ahead to the 4min mark:

I ran my sfl-2 tubed pre with the Ragnarok for ages. Just took some of the edge and glare off. But after switching to the lynx aes16e and getting better power to the rag, I didn't feel it was necessary anymore.

I have different gear but I have had more success running my SS as a pre into my tube amp. You should experiment with different chains.

This is madness, one of the chief benefits of headphones is simpler gain stages. Rather than trying to tweak a problematic amp by adding an active pre, you would almost always be better off with a better/more suitable amp!

But a tube hybrid integrated device simply doesn't satisfy the audiophilia-nervosa that fuels our addiction/hobby...

Not Rando at all, I was legitimately curious about it.
