Time for some weird 1980-ties pioneering Electro/Rap fusion that is utterly 1980-ties...

P.S. Feel free to 'robot', 'boogie' and 'break' to this marvel...

Why do you use this as a test track? What properties of this track do you listen for? I think this whole album is recorded and mastered very well.

I listen for a few things:

    1. If you play it in a moderate to medium level, you will hear the bass line and the kick drum, and see if you can distinguish this, as they are mostly in unison. A sluggish setup will sound indistinct, where you have to work to tell which is what, as the attacks are at slightly different frequencies.
    2. SRV dynamics are pretty pronounced in this track. In a room (not headphones), I listen for a balance between the mids, and the attacks. Bright systems will be spotlit by the lead licks, as this is a normally balanced recording (to me).
    3. His voice is not miked as closely as the guitar and tomtoms, so the dynamics should vary. Some rooms have the voice only sound right when the mids are prominent, but that leads the bass line to sound too loud, and the guitar dynamics to be too high. I am sensitive to lumpy sound, and in a lot of systems this tells me where the emphasis is in the room. And lumpy rooms kill depth, and make it sound less lifelike, duller and less engaging.
    4. Rimshots are distinct even when they coincide with the guitar licks. I look for separation between them (at about 5:00 or so) to see if the setup (amp/speaker) compresses, or congests at that frequency, which can be mid to tweeter overlap, or just breakup on the driver.

The whole album is very very well engineered and mastered, I agree. I actually caught on to it after hearing a vinyl demo years ago, which I thought was bad, but it turned out room was badly set up, so it sounded muddy initially. When everything was adjusted, its like a light shined through, lol.

This intro, the guitar transition and then the the mid-tempo medley. This is such high level song writing and composing. The ending and fade out complete the song full circle. Every time this song sounds better...

Update: this video of Prince's "Take Me With U" was taken down.
