I ordered the first of February. I have been waiting a long time. My order was up to the stage where it was waiting on the Padauk wood to be completed but switching to Cherry means he could assembly the headphone with what he already had on hand thus expediting the delivery.

Apologies all around, I should have been more clear with my initial post.

I am really proud that I managed to find that image at work without setting off the corporate "inappropriate content" monitors!!

I'm fine with this as long as Tyll is as brutally honest when he reviews headphones from the bigger manufacturers.

The HD800 is unlistenable for anything but 1 or 2 genres of music. Not one major reviewer had the balls to point this out when it was released and they were all proclaiming it to be the best....

Now they're happy to point out its flaws after many years and an update.

This is the closest to a negative review that I've seen from him. I'm not including crap from Ultrasone or the first Beats of course....

I eagerly await the Edition 6 Thousand Dollar review. No punches can be pulled at that price point.

It has only one name in my mind. I don't care about their lame attempts at renaming :D

I have finally received my pair of Atticus earlier this week and so far I'm very impressed. The Atticus sound like an improved version of the LCD-2 rev.2 and it's exactly the type of sound signature that I was looking for.

I'm planning to write a mini-review next week but I can already tell you that the Atticus are probably the most musical headphones that I have heard in my life.

Oh, and yes they sound GREAT with Metal \m/

I'm really not sure I agree, once SDR modded and paired with a competently-chosen amp.

Here are some impressions after listening to the Eikon over the weekend with the Mjolnir 2 (with Miniwatt SQ E88CC tubes through Gungnir Multibit). I think it’s a great pairing overall.

One thing it has proven to me is that these tubes have really impressive bass extension. The Eikon’s bass seems pretty dang clean to me. It is obviously elevated, but good sub-bass without a huge mid-bass bump also helps it integrate better (whereas I find the TH-X00 bass a bit annoying for anything that’s not EDM).

I’m not sure how to describe the mids other than to say that it sounds musical and full without getting shouty. I think I’m starting to get what it means for a midrange to be smooth and sweet. As someone who mostly likes the HD600 FR, I will say that I could have used a bit more treble on the Eikon. Female vocals and wind instruments needed a little bit more air/breath, and cymbals sound a tinge dark. No real sibilance concerns, at least, and otherwise the FR is right in my wheelhouse. I love the SDR-modded HD800, but this is significantly fuller and more natural out of the box.

I found dynamics great to excellent. It can definitely bring the slam. Snare and kick drum attacks come across really well, and the sound is very lively. Micro-dynamics also seem quite good. I do think that it likes to be listened at loud volumes, which could become a problem. Soundstage feels roughly HD600 sized (which is to say wide enough for me to not feel closed in), and instruments have good separation. It’s not the ultimate authority on detail, but it has a surprising amount to me for a closed-back. And it really does isolate well (significantly more so than TH-X00).

They are decently heavy, even in cherry. Headband distributes weight well and I can wear them for a long time, but it’s more noticeable than TH-X00. The Eikon pads are at least very comfortable.

Hopefully that was helpful, as I’m pretty new to describing sound. I’m comparing to my experience with HD600, TH-X00 (Ebony), and HD800 (SDR modded and EQ’d, I can’t listen to it stock). Definitely planning to keep them, if anything the TH-X00 may go.

I had a chance to listen to the Eikon and Atticus at Axpona. I went in thinking I would prefer the Atticus based on what I'd read here and my current headphones (Headroom-tuned Beyer DT-880, Campfire Lyra II, and Mad Dog Pro). I'm not very good at explaining what I heard, but I really preferred the Eikon. I had a chance to listen on several different amps at the show (Micro ZOTL, Milo, several Decware amps, and even a brief term with Ragnarok and Yggdrasil). To me, the Eikon seemed less veiled and more cohesive. It was a fun headphone to listen to and I could easily see it working well at the office where closed headphones are required to avoid disturbing others.

I'm now saving up to pick up the Eikon in Cherry. If it helps, my test tracks were Picture of You by The Cure, Sleeping Beauty (Live) by A Perfect Circle, and Aegispolis by Aphex Twin.

I kinda considered the Atticus' veil to be very similar to the HD650 (though the Sennheiser does extend better.) I oddly miss its "uniqueness" of the Atticus despite the Eikon having a lot of areas where it is clearly better. Much like the HD650 (or HE500) vs. the HD800, I know the Eikon is "better" than the ATticus, but something about the Atticus made me like it more at times.

That said, I did get the Eikon because it was more flexible with things. I'm still kinda torn on whether or not I made the right choice as far as that goes.

I have a feeling a lot of people that buy one will continually wonder if they would have been more happy with the other.

It seems to me that the Eikon would be more flexible with amp/DAC pairings to tweak the sound to taste. I feel it's easier to warm up a bright headphone than trying to brighten a dark one.

Other than aesthetics, do you really think that the wood choice makes that much of a difference in terms of the sound quality? I'm curious if anyone has heard the Atticus or Eikon in both wood versions and if the differences were really noticeable. I'm considering changing the wood on my order to Cherry to save weight.

people might argue otherwise but i think the differences in weight fall on one side of the "just noticeable differences" rule (on the not noticeably different side haha)
