There is supposed to be a modest but evident bump in sound quality over the 6X5 and Bendix 5852 tubes I have been using. I can still use those tubes with the mod. I have a couple of 1950’s NOS Sylvania 6BY5G tubes arriving Thursday.

Overly philosophical question: How much more/less would you enjoy this hobby if you couldn't share/discuss it with anyone else?

Just watched "Burn!" from 1969. Interesting movie, and in many ways similar to Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness.

      Link 1 was fascinating.

Looking into further reading, the Beck book from 1953 is now a print of demand from Cambridge U Press, and Valley can be had print-on-demand, leather-bound from India for 40 bucks with free shipping. What a brave new world we live in.

Today I read somewhere that class A was the sex cuz no crossover distortion. Note the operating region of a device is approximately linear.
    1. ultrabike
      ultrabike
So no, there is still distortion. Particularly compression can occur. So even in the absence of cross over distortion, the system can be made more linear with some negative feedback.

Never really liked the E8XCC family of tubes, even their best variants. 6SN7 is superior to my ears, 6N1P as well. One tube to rule them all is ECC40 IMO, cheap as chips and packs a punch.

I was torn between this and the Type30 HEDDs. Figured that I don't need the port, as I'm crossing it to subs at 80Hz. Also I'm a sucker for dome mids.

Amazing film; amazing music. Check out the list of musicians in the credits. I've never read Heart of Darkness, but have read many of Conrad's other novels. I agree that film is pure, concentrated Conrad all the way through

I read heart of Darkness in high school, didn't really like it, too long and wordy, but I liked the idea. I'm surprised how well a movie based in Vietnam could stick to the original plot of the book though. Everything happened almost exactly the same way, with some added bits (pretty sure Conrad never wrote about surfing).
