There's always the console version of Minecraft, too.

I always feel like playing Minecraft on consoles is a bit of a subpar idea, but a kid probably isn't going to miss anything a PC version offers over that one lol.

Anyway, Tearaway is pretty good for kids too

Oh my goodness, my girls (7 & 10) absolutely adore Minecraft PE on their Android tablets. Tbh, I don't mind them spending some time on it as it's actually quite a creative game. Some of the things they've built in-game, most impressive. I also join in sometimes too :).

On a side note, glad I picked up Witcher 3 the other day. Currently lvl 7 & enjoying it immensely. I've not gotten into the Gwent side of it though. Perhaps @Kattefjaes or @MuppetFace could advise whether it's worth the time/effort? Cheers.

    Yes :)

It's fun and actually a pretty big part of the game. If you don't learn it and collect some cards chances are you'll feel left out later on.

Have you already played this. It only came out yesterday. If so, how is it. I hear story/feel is great, as would be expected from Team Ico, but camera and controls are wonky and somewhat last gen (or even PS2 quality).

I need games that are not addictive. Pokémon Go is already distracting my son enough from his chess studies. Games that you can play a bit and still easily walk away from are great. I am afraid Minecraft is this huge world that will just suck him in. But his friends do love it.

I've been playing The Last Guardian all morning. Been looking forward to this game for about eight years now, as Shadow of the Colossus is one of my favorite games of all time. ICO I'm a bit less fond of, though it's undoubtedly a masterpiece in its own right.

The game is definitely more along the lines of ICO as far as the exploratory aspects are concerned, and I suppose there's a bit of SotC's grapple platforming mixed in here and there, particularly when interacting with Trico.

The presentation is, in a word, stunning. You can just tell so much care and love was put into the creation of this game. The animations of Trico are gorgeous, and it reply feels as though you're befriending an intelligent but wild beast. There is a narrator (the boy recalling the events as an adult), and he kind of guides you through the introduction to the game. Which I'm usually not fond of in game design, but in this case it's subtle and integrated well enough to not be obtrusive.

World design is fabulous stuff: it provides plenty of atmosphere and mystery, telling of story of its own in subtle ways and just begging to be further explored. The lore of these games always fascinates me, for what little there actually is. I feel as though it's well balanced in that respect: too much lore and background "stuff" would have been distracting. This is a game that is just as much about exploring the relationships of its characters as it is the world at large.

Now on to the negatives, and I definitely feel there are some here. The camera and controls are clunky. Moreso than in ICO and SotC, as interaction with Trico is more complex and there are more nuances to this game. Having to climb up Trico and try to pan the camera around so you're not clipping through him or a wall is just frustrating. All the moreso when you're in one of the game's denser environments or on a more narrow pathway and need to try and see around the guy without losing sight of him for too long.

By far the biggest issue for me at the moment however is the excruciatingly slow pace. Granted, I know one has to be "in the zone" to really get into a game like ICO: the whole 'escort mission' and hand holding stuff requires patience. Even more than that however, interacting with Trico is slooooow going. Which makes sense: he's a very large creature, and his movements are meant to be deliberate and carry weight. And they do. When he jumps onto a ledge, you "feel" his musculature and balance shifting, the impact of his massive body, and in many instances you see him struggle to pull himself up onto the platform. It makes perfect sense.

But damn, after scaling 20-something steps like thins along the path of a giant tower, I feel myself getting kinda fidgety. And that's coming from someone who pores over the writings of Plato for fun.

This only gets worse when you encounter frequent obstacles that require you to dismount Trico and go your own way, finding some pathway to get rid of the obstacle so that Trico can keep slowly proceeding forward. It all gets a bit too repetitive very quickly.

Granted I haven't played *too* far into the game, so the pace may very well quicken considerably. At the very least I'm sure it'll mix things up enough to help counteract this feeling of tedium that has set in after the last two hours or so.

Overall though, I have to say The Last Guardian is an incredible experience so far despite the clunky controls and snail pace. It's one of those games that could easily be considered "beautiful" in multiple senses.

I hate card games so grumpily avoided it on my first playthrough. However, I instantly did a "New Game+" playthrough after that, and started playing it.. and had a surprising amount of fun.

So that's not much help, is it? Both "yes" and "no". The decks you get are a bit odd, and the whole thing is a bit weird and fourth wall breaking (secret villains on cards etc.), but I found it an oddly entertaining distraction from setting fire to zombies.

I thought this was kind of inspiring, kids diving deep on the origins to what we have today. Look at the sheer vastness of a measly 64K memory when presented this way:

He has a more technical vid also, emulating a 6502 CPU, that was in the NES, AppleII, ATARI, etc.

PS. hope this wasn't already post here. Thanks!

    FINALLY beat Mass Effect 3.

Really pumped for Andromeda now. It'll be nice to go back into the same/similar universe with a fresh start.

Forza3 was surprisingly entertaining. I'm more of a simulator guy but F3 arcade driving was really fun. It's kinda sad that the old Richard Burns Rally still reigns. Almost all new 'rally' games lack the finesse and unforgiving attitude.

Now back to the geek cave and DS3! Die invader dieeee!

Are you talking about Horizon 3? Hands down, best racer to come out in over a decade. I'm usually a simulation guy (Forza, Gran Turismo, Project Cars, etc) but Horizon 3 really blew me away. The first two were great, but man, 3 just nailed it.

Have been gaming a little bit more but to get caught up with everything:

FFXV - Biggest disappointment and probably one of the worst FF games to date. All that time spent on pretty colors, downgraded FFX grid system, and revamped FFXIV combat system should have been instead spent with greater character development and much better story cohesiveness. This game reminds me a lot of Xenogears in the sense that the first part was very solid but once you switch discs and go towards then ending it all falls apart. There is decent character development with the main chars and solid music but that is all FFXV provides.

Uncharted 4 - Not able to quite touch on the greatness of Uncharted 2 but definitely one of the best Uncharted games to date. Great story, great new characters, and excellent story telling. Best thing about Uncharted 4 is it progresses steadily and has a lot of background story of history behind these treasures. Also the ending leaves one feeling like they may be headed in a good direction.

Dishonored - Really solid game. Good story and great gameplay. Sometimes the quests can feel a bit grinding but overall the story makes up for it. Excited to play 2 after getting through Witcher 3.

Doom - Weak story but gives you the nostalgia factor I guess people been waiting for. It's more of an adrenaline rush than a good game with the mostly metal soundtrack. Doom 3 has this one beat in my mind all day long.

Stardew Valley - Great game. Nice and easy for a sim. Haven't played with the latest patch but there is a lot to do.

Gears of War 4 - Great multiplayer co-op in both campaign and story mode. Weak story but good gameplay.

Wolfenstein the New Order - Great game solid story and why hasn't anyone made this into a movie yet?

I actually like FF15. My al time fav game is Final Fantasy 9 and it's obviously no where near as engaging and emotional but IMO 15 is step up for Enix as they've put up some shit. I think the story is meh but the chilled driving and entetaining moments along with some cool hints make it a decent game for me.

By far the best game I've played since FF9 is The Witcher 3 I can't praise that game enough I've sunk over 300 hours into it's just a masterpiece...plus Yennifier tho ;)

FFIX is one of the best games I've played too. Played it as a kid on PS1 and have played it through multiple times by now and just yesterday was thinking about playing it through once again in the near future... I find it even better than FFVII which is GREAT but I prefer the environments and characters more in IX.

I thought 7 was ok but 9 just completely changed how I looked at video games. 9 was actually my first FF. I used to mainly play Zelda OOT and MM and was a fan of the early Pokemon series and played the old WWF Smackdown series. I was going to buy a game one day when I finished school, I was 14 at the time and I just see this cool looking white case with the gold crystal and FFIX wrote across it. I looked at the back and thought it looked interesting. I nearly put it back but something told me to just risk it haha

Put it in got to the Thestre Ship performance and was still unsure. It was my first turn based battle system I've used outside of Pokemon and I was just unsure. When the ship crashed into evil Forrest I knew I was in for an epic adventure and from then on I was hooked! Took days of school to play it haha and was constantly researching and found out about Ozma and other secret bosses and just got so immersed. I adore that game and wish I could relive that first play through.

I've conpleted the game roughly 8 times and never have I beaten Ozma. Looks like I need another play through.

That game is 10/10 for me.

I still find FF8 the best out of them all, and was crazy enough to play through it (I believe) 5 times start-to-end when I was younger.

Sadly don't have the energy (and motivation) to play it again, especially when I can probably retell the plot unaided...
