Yeah. This is why I am hesitant to upgrade my speakers, unless I get something custom like this again. These were just $110 on craigslist. To get a new model of something from Omega now, its like $500 at the cheapest. But the finishes are so nice.

The speaker that got me started in the hobby of high-end audio - the classic B&W 808. Mind you I never owned these, but as a high-school senior I had the chance to listen to them and then dreamed about them almost every night...

And here they are in a different finish.

These things were almost as big as a medium-sized refrigerator. Clearly would never have fit in my room or dorm-room. A boys allowed to dream though, right?

The center channel looks okay to me. I have always found this style of the Martin Logan main speakers attractive.

My former bookshelf speakers - the beautiful Chario Academy One's. The woodwork was amazing.

Their Italian brothers Sonus Faber get much more exposure here in the US, but Chario's build quality to me was just as good and the SQ was very good as well.

Just goes to show that speakers don't have to be big to be beautiful.

    Cheers

Louis Chochos does pretty sick work, as he veneers it himself with thick veneer. I find the BirdsEye Maple the most iconic from him though.

I can't see Martin Logans anymore without thinking of Friends.

I only watched Friends a couple of times. They did not have/show Martin Logan speakers in the episodes I watched (I would have noticed). I wouldn't want that association stuck in my mind. I'd probably get over it, though.

If these look familiar, that's no surprise. This is a pair of Carver Amazing Platinums. These were a pretty good system as supplied from the manufacturer, but to get the hidden potential out, you have to do some mods, specifically to biamp them with a active crossover and bypass the passive built-in crossover. Picture one is the dedicated active analogue crossover I built for the project. This was actually "reverse engineered" from a unit a friend of mine had built but not kept a schematic of.

Next up is the amplifier stack consisting of a pair of Bryston 2B amplifiers bridged to mono that drive the ribbons. These amplifiers have a bit of history, but I better stay on the safe side and keep it to myself! Suffice it to say they got a lot of use, but true to Bryston's reputation, they still rune fine. The Crown XLS 2000 does a pretty good job of driving the woofer stacks and run cool.

Bottom is a picture of the complete system (along with gratuitous Mercedez-Benz commercial). In my futzing around with things, I believe the 60 in ribbon to be superior than the two 30 inchers and the flat coned "honeycomb" woofers better than the later units.

These came to replace my sold/lamented Infinity IRS Series Five's and scratched my itch for a system with a large concert-hall image and good detail, tonality and bass. I still miss the IRS, tho...

    Best, Kevin

I like the Moth speaker at the top of the post. I remember seeing it in ads in TAS or Stereophile, way back when.

The Moth Empire Subwoofer System is one of the wildest looking speakers I have ever seen:

To be honest that subwoofer's chassis doesn't look like it's the most acoustically practical design out there but I'm not even going to pretend for a second that I know more about subwoofer construction than the engineer(s) who built it :p

I can't help thinking of a paraphrase of one of Stephen Colbert's old catch phrases: "That's the Craziest F#?king Thing I've Ever Seen". :)

I'm pretty sure that Moth sub is really a Bruce Edgar...

Is Bruce Edgar an architect, @JK47 ? I can't find much on the web about him/that.

Bruce Edgar, of Edgarhorn. Designer of various horn systems. The Moth sub looks very similar to the sub in the Edgarhorn Titan system.
