Looks sketchy to me. I would only ever buy used gear from people here or Headfiers with good reviews.

That site is a nice find! Here's their measurement of the HD650 for comparison:

Seems like the Amiron has the more pronounced upper-mid rolloff, followed by more treble. Pretty much what I would have expected, but the treble spike doesn't look as severe as most of the other Beyers. Would love to hear these, or for trusted ears to give a good writeup.

These are on my "need to try" list. Amazon had a one-day sale on them for just over $400... I was going to bite but slept and missed the deal. Patiently waiting for the deal to return.

I bought a pair of T1v2's on amazon for $800 (direct from amazon). They were absolute magic on like 2 or 3 recordings, and way too freaking hot in the treble on thousands of other recordings, so I sent them back. Super comfortable headphones, although they smelled terrible. I suppose the latter would work its way out as the plastics or whatever outgas.

It looks like the treble has been calmed somewhat from the T1v2. I do wish these had the angled drivers, the headstage on the T1v2 was really nice to my ears.

All that said, I should probably buy a pair of HD650 first to see what all the fuss is about.

Thanks for the link to that German site @chakku . I'm brushing up on my Deutsch as I plan to return to the fatherland sometime in the spring. This gives me something fun to read :)

Tried these out with my sibilant tracks, and they're quite piercing. If the peak was more controlled, they'd be be alright for that warm sort of sound people like the HD650 for. As I heard them, I'd say they're too sibilant for anyone who finds even the HD600 strident.

I bought them full price on amazon some weeks ago but I did not like them. Returned them almost immediately. They are on the warm side but the tone is off because of the treble peak. Add to that terrible imaging, lack of air, some kind of distortion in the mids and you have a huge let-down. They sound off. Too bad because I liked the build quality and they feel pretty confortable on the head (I would prefer oval shaped cups tough). Also they finally added a removable cable.

Asked a friend who heard these if they have the same problem with low-mid bloat and upper-mid suck-out that I heard from the T1 2nd Gen. According to them, they do.

I had a nearly identical experience with the T1 2nd Gen. Seems like Beyerdynamic is aiming for some horribly colored "hi-fi" sound these days. All caveats apply as I haven't heard them, but I would be very surprised if the Amiron can compete with the HD 650.

So what happened to that @thesoundapprentice guy who was shilling these as though his life depended on it, claiming they were the dog's danglies? Sounds like they're just yet another wonky, piercing Beyer effort..

I'd still like some non-rando with good ears to take a bullet and listen to a pair, though. Come on, morbid curiosity and all that..

Cannot directly compare to HD650s, bot HD600s basically beat them in every department except maybe subbass extension. It was almost embarassing considering the price of the Amiron. I mean, HD6x0 are pretty good but not excellent soundstage wise, and yet they were way ahead of these, not to mention distortion, vocals and transparency.

These headphones don't have a natural sound, are not really easy on the ears yet feel congested, but also are not good at detail retreival and transparency. Like, HD700s shrill rollecoaster adventure seems a solid choice in comparison, because at least they are pretty good at some things.

Seriously Beyerdinamic, it's about time to get your shit together.

Beyerdynamic has a very love/hate tuning style. I personally enjoy my DT1990 more then my HD650. I just wish someone could manage to make an open headphone under a grand that didn't have some kind of glaring flaw.

I didn't have the chance to hear the DT1990 but from what I can tell from impressions of others and graphs I probably would have preferred them to the Amiron by a margin. A little less warm, less presence in the troblesome 6-7 khz region, more sparkle up top even though with some kind of peak, better soundstage.

I really hope a good affordable open headphone without noticeable flaws pops up in the following 1/1.5 years.. It's not even about having a successor to HD6x0s anymore..

Don't hold your breath. Senn will never upgrade the 650. It sounds like Beyer will always be love/hate. I honestly think it is impossible to make an open headphone with a perfect frequency response, and those who come close insist on charging $1500+ for the privilege. The headphone market is really starting to piss me off.

What Beyer has going right now seems mainly due to new pads. I put DT pads on the T1.2 when I had it and the low-end problems went away, although the overall balance was far too lean at that point. The treble spike was still there, but that's to be expected from them. I could've lived happily with the T1 if the mid-range hadn't been so screwed up.

I personally gotten the Beyerdynamic Amiron Home. To be honest I've been feeling mixed about it, it's not sounding much like my DT 1990 at all. I'm finding the DT 1990 to simply have more body to it's sound and everything is more tactile and physical sounding on the DT 1990's. The mids sound more natural on the DT 1990's, the Amirons sound almost too soft in certain parts of the mids but can also have a bit of a treble bite at times that comes off as stronger than the DT 1990's despite usually being less treble-oriented. It just comes off as a headphone that is a bit confused on what it wants to be while that is not the case with the DT 1990. Not really hating the headphone though, sort of like it some reason as it's grown on me, it's one of the few headphones I can actually sleep with while listening to it.

Well, nothing in that report is enticing. ;)

With a small chuckle, I'm reminded of a joke in my house. At the conclusion of the Mercedes benz commercials detailing all the tech designed to allow the driver to not drive, we all say in unison, in the very serious Mercedes Benz Announcer Voice:

"Mercedes Benz. For People Who Sleep."

True, not even the HD 650 makes me relax like these do and the treble peak does become less bothersome the longer you listen to it which can't be said for some other headphones. A relaxing Beyer is kind of weird for me. I've only had the Amiron for a couple days but that's what struck me immediately about it, it's relaxing.

Lol, and here I'm contemplating purchasing a used Mercedes-Benz.

Don't worry I'll make a review comparing the two so people will know better what to expect from them, I like to spend time with headphones before jumping to any real conclusions. Sadly don't have anything such as the HD 600/650 to compare with as a reference, though I may be getting the HD 800 S in a couple months.

I got a sample of this in. Actually not too bad. The frequency response is unabashedly V-shaped with a wide swath of bass warmth. Haha! From the BA (300B EH), the treble edge gets taken off quite a bit. The more laid back sounding amps seem to suit the Amiron better. Compartively, the HD650 (KISS modded) has more even bass, delicate refined treble, and more evident midrange, which is what I assume @thesoundapprentice meant by the HD650 being "hollow".

Despite the warmth, the Amiron seems slightly "cleaner" sounding in the mid-bass than the HD650, but this isn't surprising as we know the mid/high bass distortion of the HD650 to be its Achilles heel. For example, the bass line from Alanis Morissette's Princes Familiar sounds muddier on the HD650K, although the deep fundamental of the bass notes are more evident on the HD650K because its mid/upper bass bump is slight compared to the Amiron. I would hesitate to say the Amiron is clearer (under all circumstances) because the emphasized cloud region of the Amiron can detract from the subjective perception of clarity if there is a lot of energy in this area in the recording.

The Amiron is crisper and more detailed than the HD650 in a macro sense. The HD650 beats the Amiron on macrodynamics with the Amiron exhibiting slightly more compression. The HD650's greater ability to slam can be heard around the reintroduction of the bass after the breakdown section in the middle of the song (same Alanis song above) and especially the when drums hit after short break at 2:53. I should mention that the Amiron is still no slouch in this area with much greater macrodynamic capability than the TOTL Sony MDR-Z1R and any electrostatic type headphone.

In terms of headstage, the Amiron's is less wide and deeper than the HD650, which is actually my preference. Being primarily a speaker listener, I dislike wide headstages on headphones. As for the Amiron's mid-treble, I found it to be tolerable at more modest volumes and with most recordings, although I should point out that a few tracks I tried, such as Pearl's Jam's State of Love of Trust were "difficult" and caused listening fatigue. Again, I would emphasize that a laid-back sounding amp like the Vali, LG, NBM, ECBA, Stratus, WA5 be used with the Amiron to take the edge off.

BTW, the pads are comfy, but also extremely leaky. Does not isolate noises from the outside, at least with the stock pads. The Amiron does do a decent job of preventing sound from the inside going out though. This combination does have its advantages in a work environment where you might need to hear your co-workers, but you also don't want to disturb them. The Amiron is nominally 250 ohms. Not surprised because the 250 / 600 ohm Beyers usually sound better.

Marvey, I'm curious what your thoughts on the DT1990 would be. I preferred it to the Amiron in almost every way when I tested them side by side. Maybe I can loan you my pair if I get some free time from work.
