Beyer T1 Generation 2 Measurement - One Channel Only

Why only one side? Read this: http://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/beyer-t1-gen-2-just-came-in.525/
    Comparison with Gen 1: http://www.superbestaudiofriends.or...eyerdynamic-t1-gen-1-vs-gen-2-comparison.541/

Partial subjective impressions until I get a fully functional unit:
Metal coloration and timbre still evident the treble. Mid-treble seems more refined, but still peaky. Notable difference from Gen 1 is that mids are now recessed as a result of warmish bass and lower mids. I don't recall the mids being this pushed back with the Gen 1. Gen 1 was warmish with nasty treble. Gen 2 seems warmish with sucked out mids and slightly less nasty treble. My instinct is that Gen 2 seems like a gimmick. I might prefer the "proper" T1 Gen 1 to the Gen 2.

Here's a photo of the angled drivers. Good soundstage (if only the other channel had been working). The angled drivers makes the application of mods such as fine TP layer more difficult.

Dual entry cables is a nice touch. Makes aftermarket cables easier. Standard three conductor 1/8" phono plugs are used. One thing I did not like was how the plugs fit in. They don't quite "snap", but rather "thud" in, so it's difficult to know if you get a secure connection.

Oh god... that looks painful. No wonder my ears were getting raped by a new pair of T1v2s.

A few days ago I put some open cell foam and rug liner on my friend's dt990s. That did wonders for the treble but I still felt the need to use some EQ. Perhaps the T1v2 could benefit from some foam and rug liner as well.

Well, I guess this was kind of a downer. So disappointing that I don't even have any words. I guess there will probably be no interest in a loaner program. Might as well get rid of them quickly.

Hopefully you can just return them. Enough for a HD800s or Ether.

Very sad to see. I'd hoped that the new T1s would be better.

Thanks for suffering so we don't have too.

They've successfully gathered everything bad about beyer in one sucky headphone. Swell.

Bummer. Looks like the big peak hits earlier too - more like 6.5k instead of at 8k on original t1 per the changstar graphs.

To my ears the new T1 has less trebble at 6.5 than the dt990 has. What bothers me with the T1 is a sharp sparkling peak at 8 and something else in the area of 1-2 kHz.
Is this small ridge at 2kHz in the CSD driver ringing and would this be audible?

    Same impression I got.

Agreed. Would hate for SBAF to lose money on this dud. Lots of other more worthy stuff (potentially) out there.

Did a comparison with this and your HD800 stock measurements. Makes sense. Very similar curve, with maybe the HD800 having a bit more of a peak in that 6KHz area. That would explain what I said about the pair I heard at RMAF. Sounded like a low-fi, crappy imitator version of the HD800 with a bit less of that "etch" due to the HD800's slightly higher treble peak. I don't think the amp Beyer had did the T1v2 any favors, but the headphone sounded like crap.

A consideration for keeping them and sending them off to a few of you is so SBAF doesn't get accused of jumping to conclusions based on measurements or being Beyerdynamic haters. The subjective aspect is his hobby is still important. However, there is no way that any sane person couldn't conclude "midrange suckout" or "needles, the needles!" based on the measurements. And as @Negura posted in the other thread, the bass quality does suck (distortion), perhaps because of it being more noticeable in the Gen 2 in relation to the mids.

Lol! So basically you need other sane people to affirm your sanity. Lets get them to a couple people and unload these bad boys asap. And then we should start listing, for information sake only, of course :) a list of reviewers who unequivocally praise them.

I'll have these play continuously overnight for some days, just so I did my due diligence before final comments.

What I like so far is the soundstage (nothing new - I liked that with T1V1) and they provide some isolation from my noisy kid.

Sound wise - I am still trying to figure out what genres I can enjoy best with these, if any. EDM does not have a high requirement for tonal accuracy, so this could do, but then again that bass... We'll see.

I don't have a lot of faith in Beyer tuning a Tesla driver, I was betting this is what it'd sound like. I think if they switch off of Tesla I could be interested, but not for now.

I'm not even sure T1 Gen 1 fans would like these. I thought the "good" T1 Gen 1s were an OK to good headphone from the right amp. The Gen 2 with its elevated bass / midrange suckout, and shift of the treble peaks from the mid-treble to the lower-treble doesn't do it any favors.

I say return them, get your money back, and re-use the funds for SBAF. I don't think it's worth sending these around.

But that's just me, and I'm just one person out of many.

Agreed. If it was at all close to good or say, both drivers were working, I'd say send it around. In fact, I think you should at the least exchange it for another one with both drivers working.

Right now it looks like the equivalent of sending around a stinky diaper and asking everyone to smell it.

Well, it's official. Anyone that likes this headphone likes to smell, and maybe even eat, diapers.
