It's a tricky area. I used to do a lot of business around that area with my prior job. There are few decent independent places in the financial district about a quarter mile up past 7th street if you wanted to get away from the overpriced chains near the hotels.

Chinatown is probably too far away. That's where Philippe The Original (French Dip) resides. This is an El Lay institution. I realized I should have posted some of these tips for out of town travelers or folks not familiar with the area.

To the east of LA Live is Skid Row. It's been slowly and notably expanding the past few years. The boundaries aren't very distinct. I would not be surprised if there were a dude or two shooting up in the bathroom of JW Marriott. I'll drive through these streets every now and then to show my kids how good they have it.

Is that the LA Grand Central Market?

If it is, I can completely and thoroughly vouch for it. AWESOME FOOD! And lots of choices. A true blend of international food with good prices and quality.

Grand Central Market is amazing. I had no idea Canjam was at LA Live this year. Terrible idea!

When in the area, take time to check out the Bradbury Building, where Blade Runner was filmed.

Cantor's is a mandatory stop for Deli in LA. Great food served by waitresses who look and act like George C. Scott having a bad day. Pastries are Eastern European- style depleted Uranium heavy...Be warned.

Back in the early 90's I'd take the #40 County Jail bus out from downtown L.A. to Lawndale, en route home from friends in Montebello. It cuts a swath through L.A., bisecting it from poor to rich. Humbling. The 440 Express was too expensive - that took the freeway.

I'd like to nominate a new Forum Category, under Non-Audio Stuff
    City Travel Guides

One thread per city/region, with the First posting in each City/Region thread always a Sticky Post (updated by Mod or Volunteer owner?)
as a quick reference to the "Best Of..." list of places, culled from the discussions within.

I'll volunteer ownership of Denver/Boulder Sticky Post.
always good to have a quick resource (from friends, besides Yelp) cross check when traveling to a new city for work/visit.

All this talk about LA has me feeling nostalgic. I've lived in Chicago for nine years now but grew up in the LA and OC orbit. With all the amazing cultural opportunities that LA has to offer, it's sad to hear that LA Live is probably what many out-of-town CanJam attendees now associate with Los Angeles.

I've almost made it down to Joliet for a metal concert or two, but I always decide that I don't want to make the drive. :)
