The general consensus appears to be the onerous contractual terms that Audeze had to agree to with Apple in order to get their headphones into the Apple Store.

There's a chance that these terms are legally restricted, or can't even be enforced in certain countires, or it could be that Switzerland is simply too small for Apple to be bothered about.

Doing business with Apple is like dancing with the Devil.

would like to hear the cipher one day, but don't need/want the closed Sine version.
Darko's reply tweet to me today said this new open headphone version didn't "require the cipher cable" to sound good.
i shall remain skeptical until proven otherwise. ;)

Just as a follow up to this. Have you tried calling Audeze's customer services dept to order it directly. I've heard that people are having some success doing this. You might need to tell them that your dog ate it or something though.

I just received my Sine DX yesterday! These are my first impressions. The headphone is beautiful. The open-grill design shows off that sexy "A". Clamping pressure is less than what I remember from the closed Sine, making the fit out-of-the-box just right for me. Regarding sound, you get that great Audeze house-sound, which is on the darker side but very capable of delivering great detail retrieval. These are musical headphones. And the midrange is smooooth. I love Audeze/planar midrange. Soundstage is wider than the closed, but not by much. It's not going to compete with EL-8's. I really enjoyed them paired with the AQ Dragonfly Red. The pairing brought the detail out even further. Low-end dynamics also receive a nice bump. At the moment I don't have the closed Sine for comparison, but I'm going to be receiving them within the next few days, so I can A/B. I was also able to order the Cipher cable separately. Using them with the Cipher boosts the volume significantly, better musicality and seems to add more separation between instruments imo. Although Audeze told me they didn't offer the Cipher as an option with Dx because the cable isn't tuned to their intended sound, I actually think it might be the best configuration I've heard so far.

Congratulations!! That's awesome. I'm due to receive mine tomorrow so it's nice to be able to read your initial impressions. I'm hoping that the DX's scale well as I have numerous amps and dacs to play with hahaha I have never heard the open back EL-8 but I have auditioned the closed back version and found it far too sibilant. So if the mids stay smooth and the treble extended but not splashy that will be ideal, for me at least. The only cans that are close in price to compare the DXs to will be my AKG K712's. I don't think it would be fair to compare them to my LCD-X's. I really like the idea of having a mini X in the DX to cart around with me though!

But please do. I like the LCD-X, but wasn't a great fan of the closed Sine. So, it would be good news if the open variety could do some of what makes the X a good planar...

Thx man! You gotta post on how it pairs with other DAC/Amps. Definitely not like the closed EL-8 from what I remember (I did audition them with the Cipher though and I can understand what you mean [although to my ears, I consider that "more detail"]). Out of the box they won't be sibilant.

Ok, happy to oblige! I'll be using my Chord Mojo as a source (DAC) and amplification will be taken over by my Liquid Carbon v2, CypherLabs Picollo, and the ALO Audio National+. I'll be using Redbook through Hi Res audio files.

Will do. I remember when more treble presence meant more detail to me too. What took me a long time to figure out is that I'm sensitive to treble peaks around 5-7khz. Now I am slowly becoming a "treble head" in that I want uber detailed and extended treble but one that can minimize nasty peaks at doing so. The LCD-Xs don't have a nasty peaks but they do have some soft scoop-outs rather peaks which is the better of two evils for me I guess. On another note, I really enjoyed the treble presentation from the Campfire Audio Andromeda's.

The EL-8 is terrible. I hope it's better than that headphone.

I really did not like the EL-8 either. But I seem to be one of the anomalies that did enjoy the LCD-XC.

EL-8 blows IMO. I've got this order and hoping for the best. I need a comfortable, semi portable planar that is easy to drive. On paper, this looks good. I'll wait and see, but it still hasn't shipped. I ordered day one pretty early.

Yeah, how? An open Sine might be nice, but after my experience with the closed, I feel the Cypher is a must...

Does the cable do anything more than enable eq, as far as DSP goes?

^^ The cable on the flat EQ setting actually brings the sound closer to the Harman Target Response Curve.
