I'm having a hard time typing on this phone. I just wanted to say that Stockfisch Records has a project where they try to combine the benefits of vinyl and digital on sacd. I can't insert the link for some reason here though.it is called the dmm cd. I've heard their compilation, not half bad.

Vinyl is way too much religion....too much to do just to hear one cut. The Yggdrasil, has rendered vinyl dead to me...Besides, with a higher dynamic range in digital files, vinyl offers too much mechanical noise... diamond needle dragging in the grooves!! Roon + Yggdrasil = My Nirvana!

I don't think that my kind of vinyl playing can beat even a mid-fi dac. I mean on a fairly ordinary deck with a fairly standard cartridge, a modest pre-amp and just about no tweaking. But for a person with good ears, who likes to tweak and/or spend more money, vinyl is dream due to its sensitivity to even small changes in the system. I'm sure no two cartridges sound the same on the same deck. Maybe that goes to stylus level even. Heck, back in the long-ago day we used to have different grades of needle for 78s!

So ultimately tunable is one advantage of playing LPs. That remains the case whatever the source-processing/mastering was. It is a heap of fun in ways that digital reproduction can't match.

I have asked for this before. Digital can only be as good as the source chain. So your RFG DAC is limited by the currently available source material. If you ever design a RFG ADC to complement the Yggdrasil and can manage it for <= $10K / 2 channels, I want one.

Say's Mike's Wife..."My wife absolutely loves Supertramp's Crime of the Century album so much she wants it played at her funeral"......Love this album!!! Have seen these guys at many concerts...the best was Santa Monica Civic Auditorium....Their Mixer dude still had some hearing left so it was not too loud....This was when they were fairly unknown yet....great bunch of guys.....Still love my 192KHz/24 Digital copy though...:D

Last time around @baldr ventured a $3.5K ballpark for a hypothetical ADC. For some reason it also discusses the latest Kardashian masturbation fantasies, not sure why though:

PS Could the engineers in the room kindly explain what an RFG DAC is? Internet was surprisingly mum on this...

@landroni : RFG is a highly technical TLA (three letter acronym). It begins Really and ends Great. You can fill in the rest.

Redbook already offers more dynamic range than your ears have- the problem is that people choose to crush the mastering for the CD. It's not a limitation of the medium, it's a choice- arguably a bad one.

The 1.25" speakers everybody listens to music on now can't handle any kind of dynamic range.

As far as RFG ADCs, GAIN 1 was definitely that and still is today.

EDIT: Re-reading what I wrote back then. Yes, we were apprehensive about Schiit back then. A lot of people think we are Schiit-shills.

The 1.75" inch speakers in my Utopia headphones sound pretty damn good to me.

I'm obviously referring to to laptop and tablet speakers.

I'm so proud that I got this right away. A lot of stuff here flies right over my head and out the back door |\/|

Let's hope there isn't any tricked out SW in that really f'n great DAC that fools the measurement equipment. But regardless, I'm sure JA would find a way to tweak out his results if it's an advertised product.

Yea, I got that. I was joking. Sorry, I forgot the smiley in my original post.

I think the Amazon Echo is bringing music back into the home, but with a cruddy speaker. Apple's new home pod is certainly better, but will people pay 3 times as much? Hard to say. I have an echo dot connected to a small amp and speakers in the kitchen. My wife loves it. I wish I had space in the kitchen for a sub :)

    But I digress.

What, like car manufacturers software detecting when the vehicle is on a test rig and changing the emissions?

Hey, does someone claim 21-bit depth somewhere? Do they sell cheap cryocoolers to go with their DACs? I want one to freeze-dry a few things...
