If you ever go to Mexico City, you should pay a visit to "El Moro"

    http://www.elmoro.mx/historia.php

    Here is their translated story:

The Churreria El Moro was founded in 1935 by Fancisco Iriarte, who arrived to Mexico from a town called Elizondo in the Baztlan valley, Spain. The churreria took on it's name from some of the festivities around that area in Spain, where an Arab, known as "El Moro", sold churros from town to town in a cart. The churreria had it's beginning similar to this vendor, since in 1933, the founder after finding out that Mexico did not sell churros, installed a little cart in the main square of Mexico city. Little by little it became known, and thanks to this, it was possible to acquire local number 42 in the then San Juan de Letran street in 1935.

Since then, the churreria has seen all sorts of Mexican artist and intellectuals at it's doors, like Cantinflas & Resortes, Carlos Fuentes, Octavio Paz, Jacobo Zabludovsky and Cuahutemoc Cardenas. Francisco, the founder, died very young and since then his three brothers (Jose, Santiago and Ignacio) arrived at Mexico to take care of the business. In this way, the business has gone from generation to generation until it became one of the most traditional places in the Mexican capital.

Anyhow. I can vouch for this place. It's awesome.

If you know of a churro place that is recommendable, don't hesitate to mention it in this thread.

I've only had churros at HomeTown Buffet. I found them unacceptable. If I were a Mexican drug lord, I would shoot the people who made them for dishonoring my culture.

Don't get the churro rings at the Mexico pavilion at Epcot in FL. Soggy sadness.

Costco churros are actually pretty good, not authentic, I'm sure, but not bad at all.

Sometimes they have these stand at the Spectrum in Irvine. They fill them with chocolate or caramel. They are not too bad. Typical churros don't have fillings though, but it's a nice spin. Cd Juarez and El Paso sell them with the fillings, and my wife loves them that way.

If I was going to take my pick, I would always go for the traditional ones.

I agree Costco is not bad.

Absolute best churro I've ever had was in Granada at a cafe near the main square. I'll find the name. Churros con chocolate ftw

I think there is a place at the Hollywood and Highland Center that does only churros, lots of topping options. I'm Gluten free so I wound't know a good churro from a dog shit one. Both would give me the runs.

These churro places have become pretty common in Seoul. I like them with chocolate in the middle. I've noticed that they can be different from the same place and the difference comes from whether or not they have just come out of the fryer. They are SO much better straight out of the fryer!

I'm currently working in South Korea and churros are huge here. They're everywhere; there are churro-only food trucks on the park pathway and stands where you can get churros in a cup of ice cream at the outlet mall. That said, I am pretty sure that no one selling a churro here has ever actually ate one before trying to make their own because I have never found a good one and every time I break down and buy one it's a huge disappointment.

I think the ones we tried in the Irvine Spectrum were sold by a Korean looking girl. While the churros were not super-awesome, they were not that bad.

Most of the ones I've seen lately are sort of fat and hollow, and they get filled in. The classic ones are usually a thin long string which is rolled a bit on a plate. No fill, one just dips them into hot chocolate. The sever or someone at the counter comes with scissors and cuts them to length. Or maybe just as they got out. Proly depends on the place.

Here is a picture of fresh churros out:

They are rolled into circle and are cut to length.

And this friends, is how churros look like just before making it to their final destination:

For a minute I thought that was a prostitute on the picture, sphinx. Then I saw the decoy cart and I was sure.

    Ok. f**k EL MORO!!!

Just came back from Mexico City and visited El Moro @ Colonia Roma (near Reforma Ave.)

    1. The line. Yes, expected. Famous place with lots of history. Childhood memories. One thinks worth it.
    2. Payment. Card did not go through. Had to pay cash. No big deal.
    3. What we ordered: 2 Mexican Chocolates, 1 French Chocolate (adds vanilla), 1 Swiss Chocolate (adds whip cream), 1 Cafe con Leche, 8 churros. We are missing 2 chocolates. Waiter cannot believe it. I show him the f'ing receipts. Dude takes it. Brings us the missing items but they keep the receipt. WTF!!!
    4. Hot chocolates: ALL WERE f'ing HORRID. Basically an orgy of sugar. We avoided the Spanish Chocolate because the Mexican one was lighter. This was light!? WTF! HORRID PIECE OF SHIT!
    5. Churros were MEH! Lots of folks just didn't finish their orders. We did. And we paid for it: My wife and kids got stomach aches. I actually woke up at 3 in the morning to throw up the chocolate. Not making shit up. I actually threw it up.
Childhood memories destroyed. This place took a dive. Cannot recommend. Bad service. Terrible food. We already knew their tortas were the definition of shit. They only offer chocolate and churros. For like shit loads of years. They fucked it up.

    Alternatives:

    For hot chocolate and coffee

Go to Cielito Querido in Reforma: http://www.cielitoquerido.com.mx/

This place is not just good. It's the best coffee and chocolate I ever had in my life. Be careful. There is a lot of Cielito this, Cielito that in Mexico city. You want Cielito Querido. Their coffee is smooth. They offer awesome Cafe de Hoya which is quite unique, and their Chocolate actually tastes like Chocolate, not a bunch of sugar with God knows what.

    For bread in general

    Go to Ballaro:

    http://www.ballaro.mx/

    https://www.yelp.com/biz/ballarò-méxico

Not only is their bread awesome, it's accessible in terms of price. This place is the real deal. Sort of European with a Mexican twist. In the likes of El Globo and Garabatos (also in Mexico), but I feel it's better. Things change.

    +++

For food in general honorable mention goes to La Casa de Toño: http://m.lacasadetono.com.mx/

The place may not offer tortas like El Moro. But skip the tortas and order a pozole from this place. Several choices. Awesome.

Hmmm ... here in the midwest USA churros aren't really that popular. I don't think I've ever had a churro that I was blown away by. They used to have them with elementary/middle school lunches in NJ in the 1990's.

Like in everything. There is good churros and there are bad churros. These were good (from memory). Now they are meh. Actually quite bad.

Think of it as a doughnut. There are good doughnuts and shit doughnuts.

For doughnuts think good as in slightly crunchy on the outside and soft but well cooked in the middle. Warm freshly made. With no after taste and just the right sugar, and the right type too. As opposed to, 3 day old doughnut all hard and stale, with a bitter after taste. If covered with chocolate think nice smooth chocolate as opposed to watery chocolate all stuck to the paper and with a taste of pure sugar (no actual chocolate).

Churros should not be much different in what qualifies good from bad IMO.

I'm sure the ones you got in your lunches were premade/frozen and heated up in an oven. The best churros are made right there when you order it or right before from fresh-made batter fried.

They were not warm if that's any indication. Really disappointing.
