Those of use who have known Luis (@LFF) for a while and met him at the Changstar / SBAF meets have had the luxury of experiencing and perhaps even owning many of his remasters. I paid for a few myself; but over the years, Luis has very generously given me some of his remasters. To this day, I cherish these remasters and play them on a consistent basis. Some of you may have noticed my CDRs at the recent meet which were labeled "LFF remastered".

My dream is to one day see Luis with his own brand and mastering studio, much like Mobile Fidelity (like 20 years ago when they were good) or Audio Fidelity. I don't think it he will ever get rich from doing this, but I do know that he could keep up with the rent on a studio and get a few beers from doing this on the side, he would. Incidently, Luis is terrible at tooting his own horn, so I figured I will do it for him.

The catch of course is that you will have to pay for his remasters. Pay for licensing (or a real copy of the original media), plus his time for his work. I already know that people pay $20 or more for horrible Paul Simon "hires" remasters with totally crushed dynamic range. So really, I can't see you guys bitch for paying a similar amount (maybe a bit more, until we can establish volume licensing agreements with the record labels) for 16/24 versions without excess treble, wonky bass, or crushed dynamics.

In light of this, Luis has agreed to donate the proceeds for limited run of a few of his remastered albums. I have a few candidates on hand and will make a final selection of what to release. The caveat will be that I will force you to buy new media from me (whatever I pay Amazon or whoever for original media) plus $10 or so. This will ensure that what we sell is 100% legit. Any remaining amount Luis wanted to be donated to SBAF.

The first run will be limited to twenty units. Again, I have not decided what album yet. Finally, please respect copyright law and don't steal music. The karmic punishment for stealing music is that someone else will steal your ideas in the future. You will know it when this happens.

Most digital mastering these days is total crap. I will be very happy to pay for good quality masterings of albums I love. If there is some kind of queue please put me in it. Happy to hear about this project!

    I'm in.

    My questions / comments:
    1. what remastered albums are already available?
    2. setup contributions for paypal would be great.
    3. Time frame?

thank you @Marvey and @LFF for doing this.

I'm hoping we can pull enough volume and seed money in so we can approach the labels for the original or even second generation tapes. We can dream right?

Time frame for the first album is a matter of weeks. I'm insistent on obtaining and delivering original media to keep things 100% legit. I'm serving a final QA / marketing guy / gatekeeper for Luis. As Luis said, he's got over 4500 albums for me to pick from. Enough to last a lifetime.

This may not be as crazy as it seems, depending on what albums you want access to. Check out this thread from a guy on SHF who is starting his own reissue label:

Holy crap. I'd love to be one of the lucky few.

EDIT: I guess not missing the cool stuff is one of the perks of staying up late as a euro guy.
