Dude, I told you it beat every interface I've used. That includes the mutec and the channel islands.

    I think it is.

How much is down to the clocks and how much to the isolation it's hard to say, particularly when most of my evaluations were done into Gungnir MB and Yggdrasil, both of which re-clock their inputs anyway, but regardless Eitr/USB Gen 5 performed at, and typically above, the level of everything else I have directly compared them to. Maybe that changes with non-reclocking DACs (though I'm inclined to doubt it based the improvement I heard with Bifrost MB and a couple other DACs I'll talk about another time), but that's something I'll test a bit more thoroughly now the thing is shipping.

For $150/$179 it's one of the most effective upgrades I can think of. And, unlike many "tweaks" not only is the difference compared to the existing USB inputs/cards and many "de-crapfifiers" quite evident it's also clearly an improvement not just a "difference".

What I really want to know is if this trips off the 'buy better gear light'! :p

If you've changed a video card in a PC you should be able to change the USB input. Only issue is that the USB card isn't available as a standalone product yet, only an in-house upgrade. If you are impatient I would say your best solution is the Eitr.

So why isn't gen 5 being offered as an upgrade kit? Sorry if I missed this.

They said it will... just have to make sure they have stock for the units being produced now first.

Perfect. I'll hold off until they are ready to sell as self install.

Sorry for labouring this point, but is there any audible downside to choosing Eitr over Gen 5 with an upgradeable Schiit dac?

I've got a Gungnir Multibit but leaning towards an Eitr since it could be used more generally - not worth it if the Gen 5 sounds better though.

To fund other hobbies, I've been thinking about downsizing my stack and selling my Yggdrasil and getting a less expensive DAC. My current listening is 100% via USB. Any thoughts on Gungnir Multibit w/ Gen 5 USB / Eitr vs Yggdrasil w/ Gen 3 USB?

Or maybe I'll just go in the opposite direction and upgrade my Yggdrasil or get the Eitr...

Warranty refresh is the a potential advantage buying the Gen5 has.

Paying $150 for two years warranty on a Gungnir Multibit that you bought used, for example, isn't all bad a trade.

Edit: I missed the emphasis on "audible" there, but still a good point methinks.

I feel stupid for asking this, but since I've seen it mentioned a few times - I'll bite. Does the Eitr still need a Wyrd in front of it or does it do away with the need for the Wyrd? I see a bunch of comments of people talking about stacking the Eitr and the Wyrd and it has me scratching my head like I'm missing something.

I was joking when I mentioned that. This is what schiit has to say in their FAQ,

Forgot to add a mani and Sys in the stack. 6 boxes!

According to Schiit's website you won't need the Wyrd.

    Cspirou beat me to it...

Cspirou, you can't forget to add a Loki to that stack... They're probably collectable now.

You are right! And for good measure add another Wyrd for the Loki.

Why not a Wyrd for the Wyrd? And a Wyrd for that Wyrd too.

Back on the Eitr: Should be a nice cheap stack with something like a Raspberry Pi Zero W.
