barbecuing a Loki sounds like something @purrin would perform on a product of which he disapproves. :p

hm, maybe all unsold Loki product could end up in an Alamogordo, New Mexico landfill.
Only to be uncovered decades from now by future generations of DSD fans?

You know, it's funny. We're going to get some flak for being "anti DSD," but in reality, our main objection to it has always been that we shouldn't be fighting for formats, we should be fighting for quality--and formats are a distraction from the elephant in the room (that is, recording quality).

In an alternate world, it's entirely possible that Sony and Phillips could have declared a one-bit, noise-shaped format as the standard for the CD from the start. Then DSD would be the primary format, and PCM would be the upstart, limited to a few esoteric recordings by a few tweaky recording engineers.

In another alternate world, it's entirely possible that CDs would have been analog. Hell, this is even more probable, as the technology already existed in videodisk format (laserdiscs were, yes, analog--not digital.) And then the primary format would be analog, and all of digital would be a weird diversion. Wouldn't that be a strange universe!

Yep, and it doesn't stop with DSD512, you also have a choice of two types of closed form filters that sound "meh":

Now there's a spinner I could get behind! Ugh. That would have made for an interesting replacement for my turntable.

What is really interesting about this is that the record companies probably would have been able to maintain their death grip on recorded music for a while longer, because it's likely that analog disk "writers" (if feasible at all) would have generation loss--and would be relatively costly. Of course, with computers/storage/internet coming up in parallel with this hypothetical optical analog disk world, the pressure for A/D conversion to allow digital storage and transmission would be huge--and so the "pirating" would have been in "inferior" digital copies of the analog medium...

Sorry, I'm still a science fiction writer...I like to geek on what might have been.

Inferior pirate copies (essentially needle drops) and an awesome analog medium would probably have kept the record companies afloat. Pirating would lead to discovery like it does today, but everyone would still consider analog CDs better and they'd buy them like one does now. Of course, digital would come along at some point, Napster would have not been a big deal. Streaming would have been out another 5-10 years. Though we wouldn't have Netflix. THE HORROR.

Ok. I guess I'm completely on board with this Sci-Fi plot. Also, imagine what music we'd have with strong record labels. Would Indie music have never gotten off the ground? Of course, we'd always have Taylor Swift.

Convert DSD to PCM in the software player. Then your PCM DAC supports DSD. Most DSD DACs are hybrid multi-bit / delta-sigma, so they need to do some of that in hardware anyways.

It's just really sad that a lossy codec is the new audiophile FOTM. I mean, I'm not one to throw accusations of snake oil around, but it takes some chutzpah to try to pass off a lossy codec as superior to the lossless ones we've had forever that work fine.
