Enough is Enough and that is what I have had an abundancy of.

My mostly visual tutorial will hopefully help those in need and interested in learning a bit more about FFT parameters All reputable measurements will either contain or have labeled nearby pertinent measurement parameters as well as test setup conditions. Unlabeled FFT measurements are about as useful as the ever so popular 20 - 20K specification on amps without mention of tolerance, level at which tested, etc. Totally useless and worse, misleading.

Just for the record, I actually don't give a crap about the short person jokes; I've come to terms with it long ago :p

My own message was humorous, ergo the smiley face. It's just kinda sad that there will be people who see all this and take casual jostling around for malevolence. Normally I'd respond with more jokes (as I will in a second), but feel it sadly necessary to preamble them with this since I know lots of people now worry about being offensive after the slew of negative backwash resulting from members' casual humour touching on sensitive topics or using less-palatable words. But an effort is being made, and though most won't agree that counts for a lot.

... In hindsight it's weird how an SJW type feels comfy here, but I guess I'm a hypocrite too :p

Also, the title of the thread is fairly inflammatory. Justified, in a way, but considering how I've seen Marvey and some others (mostly Marvey) extend olive branches to Jude (e.g. "he's learning", "still a valuable data pool"), it's a bit of a let down.

    GFDIATHYFW Jude.

    JOKE RESPONSE:
Hahahahahahaha I'm having a grand ol time inside the overhead compartment while you Slenderman clones get yo CRAMP on!

    P.S.
FFT stuff went over my head when I tried reading up on that a little while back, probably because I was also juggling journals in my head then. @atomicbob has been super helpful with that. Grazie!

Did Jude ever respond to Tyll and measure the Sony Z1R again? I know Tyll measured Jude's pair and a production version.

I assume Jude has no time to measure two pairs of Z1Rs (too busy shilling new headphones and butchering measurements).

I bought the HD800S, absolutely loved them, then sold them when the innerfidelity thing was coming out. #audionervosa

I recently repurchased the HD800S for a decent used price so that I can compare when the HD820 comes out, knowing full well there might be some euphonic distortion in the bass, but rationalizing that I would likely sell one or both of them after comparing.

Literally the next day I saw the measurement e-peen war post and I will be the first to admit that I was like:

But you guys are probably right.

Correct me if I'm wrong but his measurements are generally accurate, if you remove all of his words describing what he thinks the measurements mean. The problem is once you add the words you start to get a headache.

What is the consensus here on the actual harmonic distortion results from him? Do people think the lack of H2 in the HD 800 S is a valid result, or do people think it was massaged to get that result?

For me, it almost doesn't matter, because I find it hard to take the constant passive aggressiveness seriously. Just looking at the way the head fi community responded to the Yggdrasil upgrade, I have a sneaking suspicion as time goes on, head-fi's emotional maturity level is trending towards zero.

So was mine, sorry if it wasn't clear. I have occasionally get myself in trouble with excessive deadpan, but I assure you that I mean no harm in this instance, it was by way of a mildly affectionate "chin up, old thing".

Excellent, thanks bob. It was a nicely-presented nugget. It's saying something when you can embarrass that twat by dispelling a little ignorance.. seems it's his whole business model.

    Appreciated.

The first measurement on the DAC is inaccurate when viewed raw and uncompensated for FFT processing. There are also differences in his distortion results. All one can conclude from his original results is that the particular DAC measured is relatively well behaved and linear.

I also don't know why he is making a big deal about anechoic chambers and acoustical noise in the context of DAC measurements. The measured DAC noise floor is electrical, not acoustical. So I don't understand what one gains by measuring a DAC or an amp in an anechoic chamber. Indeed he goes on a rant about "lab-grade isolation enclosure", and offers "an example of what I'm talking about, this time in measuring audio electronics (a DAC in this case)"... Really? Lab-grade isolation enclosures, and DAC noise floor characterization? Maybe for some microphonic vacuum tubes this may make some sense, but I think he was measuring a solid state DAC.

As far as his H2 discussion in the context of the HD800 and HD800S cans, he should repeat the same type of measurement @Tyll Hertsens and @Marvey did with tones. He is doing H2 across the entire spectrum likely using a tone sweep that knocks out frequency response, distortion all at the same time. Again, IMO he should repeat the same type of measurement first.

It is good to see Jude has added acknowledgment to the mistakes pointed out in this thread at the bottom of his post. It is sad to still see his following comment:

"I think it's very cool that an increasing number of enthusiasts are interested in audio measurements, and I think it's fun to share results and findings with friends. However, when you're going to post conclusions based on those measurements to thousands (even millions) of people, I do think we should expect and encourage greater precision."

It is also sad that it was precisely this "number of enthusiast" "interested in audio measurements" the ones that pointed out to him his severely misguided and widely circulated set of errors and faulty conclusions. Folks are not being critical of his efforts due to his inexperience, lack of training, or even his physical height (why hell, I'm not physically tall myself at all). It is his uncalled for strong criticism of other peoples efforts, which is comical in some ways given his severely incorrect conclusions and obvious lack of understanding.

Tyll is wrong and I am right on HD800S headphone distortion. Looky here (graphs with 16M point FFT window). The noise floor for my AP is 45db, no I mean 35db lower than Marv's DAC measurements.

    Yup, we need greater precision.

The Jude guy is really spooky pulling off the Mao or Soviet crap.

Is there a legal/formal mechanism by which we can call bullshit on his approach? Consumer protection?

Only if he's actually selling something, probably not even then.

Can you imagine head-fi without jude?

    It wouldn't be the same.

BTW, an anagram of HEAD-FI is HI-DEAF

I still chuckle when I see the picture of the C.U.N.T. with F.U.J.U.D.E tech -that he posted himself- over at HeAd-Fi
