Once was a great movie. I'd also recommend Begin Again, which I believe is by the same director. Same flavor.

Catching Insidious 3 next Saturday with my fam. Hope it's good.

Shape of Water looks interesting, but it is not here yet. I'll get the dvd later if it doesn't show up in cinema.

The thing about The Expanse is that they have a showrunner with a PhD in physics from Cornell so everything that happens in space is fairly realistic (moreso than maybe any show to date).

    https://nerdist.com/the-expanse-is-so-committed-to-science-its-scripts-are-color-coded-for-gravity/

    https://nerdist.com/getting-the-science-right-makes-the-expanse-a-better-show/

So, there's a reason they did that, showing you space doesn't work the way you thought.

Just finished Captain Fantastic. I haven't liked a movie this much in a long time. 2 thumbs up.

Just watched this on HBO On Demand. I believe someone on here recommended this film a while ago.

Wow, what an expertly assembled, delicately handled film. It's not easy at all to pull off a movie of this subject nature. There was a touch of genuineness about it. Not preachy, not disingenuous. Very well written characters, tugs at your heartstrings at times. Viggo Mortensen was incredible.

Yes, “delicate”. So much said without a heavy handed script. While not universally identical, stereotypical family dynamics and their subtleties are a common experience for everyone. (Of course it’s the “forgotten middle child” and youngest male that betrays his hard-ass dad). It’s easy for the audience to fill in the blanks and let the movie flow. The writing, direction and acting are perfect and exploit these to good effect without being cheesy.

This film is especially poignant, eliciting emotions spanning the entire breadth of my emotional capacity, as a father of two children and a husband. I’ve aspired to be like Ben Cash and want to ferment the same values in my children. While ultimately flawed with blind idealism, Ben’s children come to save him and the family in the end, determined not to lose another parent, illustrating the requited influence, power, and love you share as parent with your children. Ben himself nor his ideals make him a hero, but rather his ability as a father and his progeny make him so.

There are absurdities in this film that remind me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, William Faulkner, and magic realism. It’s a beautiful, magical, gothic, and hilarious film, hitting close to my home.

I share the same birthday with the Dalai Lama, Sylvester Stallone, Nancy Reagan, George W Bush, and Ned Beatty, among others. Guess who’s gets a second birthday cake at chez fishski13? My boy turned 8 today, and after building a Lego Star Wars Poe's X-Wing Fighter, asked me if I could teach him how to solder.

And let me also add that Viggo Mortensen is a terrific actor. His roles in History of Violence and Eastern Promises nothing short but great.

    Cronenberg's movies, nuff said.

Fabulous! Hopefully you'll do it, right?

Finally watched "Guardians Of The Galaxy I" and "II" and yes I know I am lagging behind. The Surface Pro is fixed so I felt like testing it and checking if VLC Player worked properly.

The films are awesome. The first film reminds me of "Kung Fury" with action scenes that give me the "Die Hard" (first film) feels. The second film is pretty good too, they are about even for me. The soundtracks were great. Quentin Tarantino must have influenced the writers of the film because the music is used very effectively. (I mean that opening shot while "Little Green Bag" is playing, still classic.)

More MCU films for me in the coming time. When they get it, the experience is so much fun the story tells itself.

FINALLY renewed my Netflix disc account so I can catch up on all the movies I've missed lately.

Watched Get Out tonight and loved it to death. It'll take some time to formulate my thoughts and think of something smart to say. In the meantime, I can say that I enjoyed every single second of it. I'm not only referring to the story and acting, but the sound and visuals were spot on as well. So well done.

May need to add this one to my library.

The Post was a well put together movie. I'm not well acquainted with the events surrounding the Pentagon Papers, Nixon's presidency, or American politics in general, so it was quite hard to grasp some of the finer nuances of the plot. The acting however was great - Meryl Streep in particular put in a fine performance. Spielberg did well to create the palpable tension that built up towards the climax of the film. Can't help but feel though that the film was lacking in something... just felt a little too flat, a tad manufactured at times. Still an overall enjoyable film though.

I, Tonya was a great film. I am partial towards movies that utilize elements of interviews / documentary format, and this was perhaps the most creative I've seen it being done so far. Kinda like the original Modern Family style. Margot Robbie was really really good in this one. There's plenty of humor, but also moments that make you empathize with borderline un-emphatizable characters. The cinematography I felt was fantastic at times.

Watched "Black Panther" in the cinema today.

Pretty good film actually and I really like the ending. Yeah the film has some issues with its underlying messages but there is a truth to them. History has been unkind to certain people and the scars of slavery, colonialism and imperialism are not things you can white-wash anymore. The film does touch on social issues and those issues are part of the story and why Wakanda is Wakanda (until the end). Yeah the Wakanda-thing is really important to the plot.

I got the subtle "Lion King" vibe from this film but it did not detract from the entertainment value in general. The acting was good, the scenery beautiful and the CGI had a real feel to it. The soundtrack is spot on.

The best part of the film is how the protagonist and antagonist settle their differences in the end. They were both right and then they both accept their fates on the most beautiful moment of the day. It is poetic, that scene is so beautiful.

For a MCU-film a bit on the serious side but there are still some light hearted moments.

P.S. I stayed until the end credits and there are too many teasers for the new MCU-film. Seriously too much teasing and marketing is going to annoy me more than anything.

^ I saw the movie and agree with everything above, except that I enjoy the end credit scenes.

I really enjoyed "Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri".

Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Peter Dinklage, John Hawkes... one hell of a cast and same director as In Bruges (which I loved). It's very much a dark and twisted humor type of film.

I'm literally about to watch this. Definitely looking forward to it.

Also a quick comment about Black Panther.
It's not that I don't think that it's important that the movie was made and it's significance is not lost on me. But sincerely I really didn't think it was that good. It was essentially just a Marvel movie through and through centered around black characters. It really isn't on the same level film-wise as 12 Years A Slave, Moonlight, Get Out, or Fences. If you're looking for a really in-depth artistic examination of the topics that Black Panther touches on you should really be looking elsewhere. Black Panther I think provides entertainment without comprising itself (as opposed to Jackie Chan for Chinese people if I'm honest), which is an accomplishment in and of itself. But at the end of the day, that's all it really was. It doesn't feel sanitized, but it really doesn't engage with the weighty themes it references. Watch this movie, because you should it's great. However, make sure you watch something else as well that may make you more uncomfortable but ultimately cuts much deeper to the core.

Isnt it just like other marvel movies? Anyone who is looking for an easy shallow action entertainment should watch it. I took my nephews and they loved it. I thought it was better than Thor or Justice League. I prefer Ironman and X-men though.

Well yeah but I just kind of want people to be wary of that fact. Like we wouldn't say someone is an Audeze expert if they've only ever heard the iSine10, we wouldn't say someone has fully experienced Japanese food because they ate at a ramen place that one time, and we wouldn't say someone has really seen what Black actors/directors/writers can do just because they've seen Black Panther.

I agree. When the antagonist dies looking at the sun his last words hint at a sad story set in history.

You seem to be someone who can appreciate good movies. Pse watch 'The Invisible Guest'. It is a 2016 Spanish thriller movie. It is 'Contratiempo' in Spanish. I just used English subtitle. It was bar none the best movie I saw last year. Can't recommend it enough.

Saw "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri". Damn! This one is going to sit in my memory for a while. Great, great movie. Very good characters and cast. Sam Rockwell is one of my favorite actors, but in this one he outdid himself. I encourage everyone to go see this movie.
