I got a little surprise when I came home today. I couldn't wait to unbox this thing and get started. It literally look me five minutes to set up. Open box. Plug network connector in. Download software. Turn unit on. Wait for firmware update (less than a minute). Restart. Yahoo!

FYI, Avermetrics is a local outfit (even more reason for me to support them) with some dudes from AP, M-Audio, Avid, etc. It's not cheap at $3k from Amazon, but from what I've see so far, very well worth it.

The hardest part was figuring out that the SPDIF coax output was indicated as SPDIF B in the software.

Check out the Modi2u measurement. So clean and so immune to environmental fuckery! This is going to make measurements so much easier than with the QA400. No USB crap. The AverLAB is controlled via Ethernet. I love the dBc button that just auto aligns 0db output from the DAC with the 0db line on the plot.

Look at those results below. I can now go neener neener neener to the nubs who used to have better tools than me! (BTW, it's the man, not the machine, but a good machine certainly makes things easier).

I'm sure there is a lot more that this thing can do that I have not even tapped. To be continued...

Very nice! Let's see Yggdrasil Analog 2 next! Or your favorite, ADI-2 DAC. :p

    Linearity. 1kHz signal from -180dbFS to 0dbFS.

The real question is how many Amir-bits are you getting out of Modi Multibit.

LOL! Shit man, I think that box has better specs than the dscope Series III.

Well, linearity is not necessarily a function of bits, but in terms of Amir-bits, it's a little less than 110 / 6. So 18 amir-bits.

Check this one out. THD+N in db. Takes a few seconds to understand, but I know many of you guys will get it.

That's about 17.4 bits (ENOB) at around 0 dBFS me thinks.

More bits than the Lyr 2!

Does it have a routine to test jitter?

The APx555 is 5.08" high, while the Avermetrics is only 1.75" high. That's like over 50% taller than the Avermetrics.

I'll take the APx555 then. You know... To compensate for how short Jude is.

This is awesome functionality. This could reveal one or two things about amps and output stages.

No. If there's a downside, the software could be improved. It's really only a matter of time. I hear that the Avermetrics guys are receptive. The product is still very new.

P.S. It doesn't preclude me from using ARTA as the source for JTEST and using the audio analyzer FFT.

Sorry to ask but which batch is this Modi Multibit from? Its linearity seems to be better than that of the Modi Multibit @atomicbob measured from a while a go.

    Congratulations! This is most excellent.

I've often thought about writing a dScope script to combine the THD+N vs. level with THD+N vs. frequency to produce a waterfall plot. Same for Gain Linearity. Those two plots would be useful.

This Modi Multibit is pretty old with the -1 to 0 transition codeword glitch.

Could we get a more zoomed in view of the linearity results, with the line going horizontally instead of diagonally, zoomed in for something like a +/- 6dB amplitude axis, down to somewhere between -100 and -120dB?

I need to know if there are subtle variations that might make the DAC trashcan-worthy despite me enjoying it thoroughly subjectively.

    very cool!

Might be nice to see how it measures something that should be shitty, like the output of a motherboard directly.

Further evidence that Nwavguy Jr is either incompetent or has ulterior motives. Glad to see Marvey with such a capable new instrument. Hopefully this new setup can serve as something of a deterrent against would-be e-peeners. Too often lately we've seen people bork measurements and then hold their own idiocy against manufacturers.
