At Shanghai Cuisine in Manhattan's Chinatown (on Mulberry and Bayard). Still my favorite XLB place in the city.

Here on a busy day for lunar new year weekend, the pork-crab xlb and pork xlb are very flavorful and really good.

I either do it "properly" and poke a hole into the side like the instructions say or stuff xlb whole into my mouth and chomp down. No major injuries to report. Yet.

It's yummy either way. I've gained a few pounds since a DTF opened up at a nearby(-ish) mall.

    P.S.
The hashtag #XLBisDTF brings inappropriate things to mind. I approve.

    Neanderthals!

It's like the videos I've seen where they have an egg in a sandwich and they burst the yolk to get that slo-mo foodie shot, but it all ends up on the plate!

Tried the Paper Lantern Dumpling House at Diamond Jamboree in Irvine

Order at the counter and they bring the food to you. Prices aren't that bad but I found the soup dumplings underwhelming. Definitely not as good as Din Tai Fung at South Coast Plaza.

One place to look out for is JA Jiaozi. Originally tried to go there but it's not open yet.

Who's DTF with some xiao long bao any evening between the 12th and 15th? That's week after next, in New York.

Uh, I don't know about DTF, I usually just eat the dumplings.

    Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Anyhoo, I work evenings but otherwise I hope everything's good!

These pics are making me miss NYC food - I moved out recently but my go to spot for Szechuan food was a place in midtown east, bit further over on 55th and 2nd called Grand Sichuan Eastern

Place is low key and cheapish (relative to NYC prices) but still nice service and cleanliness

Best kong pao/gong bao I've had and the soup dumplings melt in your mouth, served perfectly

If you ever need to escape the inner circle of midtown hell its worth the walk east

I'd be down. It's definitely a good time for xiao long bao (though I don't really know when it isn't a good time for xiao long bao).

Having no reference, I found what I think is an very good restaurant in Elk Grove, CA. Journey to the Dumping. The xlb tastes great, to me. If you guys have better, I can’t wait until I can get to try it. This stuff. It’s addictive . Eating it two nights in a row.

Edit: I’m a first timer. Thanks to all you xlb SBAFers.

If anyone here is ever in Flushing, NY I would highly recommend Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao at 38-12 Prince St. I would say it's among the best XLB I've had. It is cash only so be prepared. I haven't been to Joe Shanghai in a while however I will take these over Ding Tai Fung in Taipei (or at least the one near Taipei 101 and the one in the Fuixing SOGO). That's a highly known XLB restaurant in Taipei if you've never heard of it. The XLB here are larger in size than I'm accustomed to however that just means there's more to have.

Of course in Flushing, NY there are a ton of options such as Joe Shanghai, food courts, etc. so you could spend a day just trying out all the different XLB'ss if you wanted to.

Trying out Baodega in flatiron in NYC.

-"Grandmom's" xiao long bao was not bad.
    (They also have this pan-fried)

-Veg mushroom XLB, just to try it, kinda ass. Needs umami.

Can't find my pictures of "actual" XLB from HK or Taipei, or here are 2 pictures from the last time I was in Shanghai:

Big ones aren't XLB, but for XLB fans who not familiar, "normal" bao in Shanghai are often fried and have sesame applied on it. I frequently prefer these over XLB actually. Believe it or not one of the better ones I in Shanghai was in the very touristy area in front of Yu's garden.

The XLB in the bottom picture are from Yang's dumpling, a local chain in Shanghai. Look slightly deformed but that's the way they are and I flipped them around before taking the picture. Not the absolute best, but no long waits or running out, cheap, and still pretty solid. What I judge other XLB in Shanghai by. My absolute favorite one so far was at some unknown restaurant about 0.7miles (walking) from the IHG in Pudong.

I will also say that Din Tai Fung is indeed different in Shanghai, around Taiwan, HK, Seoul, Singapore, and from what I've been told vs Japan as well. Favorite locations so far or the HK ones (about the same taste wise) and the original one in Taipei. The other Taiwanese ones and Shanghai ones are a hair behind - the broth and meat isn't always quite as flavorful. There is also one location that just flat out is not good (IMO) in Shanghai - don't recall which one, but it's one that's outside on ground level with the sidewalk outside. California ones are good in terms of execution but the pork in the US just doesn't taste right for these things although I SPECULATE that if you had pork that was not from an industrial farm supplied to these locations it would still be slightly different but equally good vs the good ones in Asia.

These look like 水煎包 in Taiwan. Also tasty.

^ Yep, I've had (and have made) those too before, but there are/were some differences in the taste/texture, especially in the dough. Both very good.

Btw, is there a spot in Taipei or Taiwan that you'd recommend for those? PM is OK if easier.
