I made $83 PayPal Gift recently and was charged $8.11 instead of free. That is quite a hefty fee. So, I contacted PayPal for clarification.

So, for those who don't know yet, PayPal has changed its fee structure on personal payment from 10 May 2018.

International payment (credit card): 4.99 USD + 3.4% + Fixed Fee
Local payment (credit card): 3.4% + Fixed Fee.

International payment (PayPal balance): 4.99 USD
    Local payment (PayPal balance): free

Details can be found here https://www.paypal.com/id/webapps/mpp/ua/upcoming-policies-full.

This is going to increase transaction cost. I wonder if there are better ways to transact.

Is there a free transfer like previous PayPal gifting?

Have their changed their commercial rates recently too?

I was all set to get some Andros from the German dealer*, but the delta between the day's exchange rates and what I was paying via Paypal just felt like I was being had. Sadly, Paypal didn't break down what was crappy exchange rate and what was fees, so it's hard to be sure. It felt like far harder gouging than I'm used to.

*Who were offering a good price and decent shipping options, bless them.

Uh, what am I missing here, it is still free.

Only when you decide to use a credit card do you pay fees, aside from the $5 for international. Put some coin in your paypal account and you will be fine. No different than lots of cc processors, they all want your money.

Was gifting through credit cards ever free? Wouldn't PayPal have had to eat the card company's fee themselves for that to be the case?

PayPal exchange rate is enormous. They probably make more money from FX spread than fees.

What's the difference between commercial and personal rates?

f**k knows. It was sufficiently bad that I bailed on the transaction, though. Kinda sucks, as Camfire's European distribution is basically this one dealer. Working on a plan "B" now.

PayPal has been shit for a while, they absolutely rape on you on currency conversation rates. Maybe if you're in the US and transfer money to another person in USD it's ok. But if you're in the EU and have a EUR account and want to send someone some GBP to pay for something... be aware the hidden fee. Same if you transfer from a non-EUR bank account to your paypal-EUR account, prepare to be raped.

Then there is the thing that they always seem to settle all disputes in favor of the buyer, if you've sold something to a tosser and he's lying be prepared for very heavy bias from paypal's side.

And their support is useless, I had an issue with Marv transferring some money to me and got kicked around between 3 different support desks and no one would give me a straight answer. We figured out how to transfer the money in the end but the ticket is still on my paypal account every time I log in... and they can't solve it... lol.

I've stopped using paypal because of this, back to bank transfers.

Problem is PayPal has become quite de facto standard in transactions. Almost everyone I buy from request PayPal. I'm gonna give Google Pay a shot. PayPal really needs a serious competition.

Bank transfer is a no no if we dont know the seller well. Sbaf is generally fine, but sometimes there are creeps lurking in head-fi or other places.

Agreed but I'm not willing to use google voluntarily for anything even if it means PayPal is still price gouging. There has to be a better way...

No way man. It's bad enough BlackBerry became nullified and I have to use Android phones. Those guys siphon up your whole life, I'm not helping them out any more than I have to. I don't use their websearch, I don't use their apps, if I use chrome I never sign in etc.

They accomplished what the SS and NBA couldn't accomplish and you can bet your a$$ they're monetizing that.

Not that I condone their wrongdoings (if any), but they're free.

Are you also against Facebook, etc?

They're not free. They're making money off people's private information.

Yes, I have no facebook. No internet presence at all except on mailing lists and forums.
