If different forces are applied to sides of membrane than we'll get higher distortion.

Looks like Meze Empyrian has fairly wide traces and 38 ohm impedance. But you are the master of your own creation.. I really appreciate your work to bring this to the hobby.

Ok ok, I give up. I'll increase impedance ;)

p.s. 8 ohm is without cable. When you'll actually measure it - it'll be the same as Aeon Flow. About 10 ohms.

Me think impedance won't matter anymore if that thing is actually good.

Just do your thing. One can never please everyone, and trying to do so is a loss of time.

Really enjoyed reading this so far, I get the feeling that your personal experience and years of R&D have led you to pick an impedance that works for your goals & needs. So do your thing!

In my experience with planar driver modding, the jagged peaks in the frequency response will likely even out very nicely with damping on the back of the driver. Felt and cotton and things like that will smoothen things out like magic. I would also try adhering some absorbent material to the magnets facing the driver. The treble reflections from the magnets do in fact change the frequency response, causing unwanted peaks.

If you use pads that have velour/cloth on the inside (not against the face, but actually on the inside edge!), you will get a larger resonant air cavity on that side, which can give you a nicer deeper bass and smoother treble. Just an idea. Perforated leather/pleather is not the same, though it's closer.

@MF_Kitten I totaly agree with you. How do you think I've achieved neutral frequency responces without numerous experiments with damping? On the other side - over damping is killing imaging.
And yes, I'll make an improvement - glue thin felt stripes on magnets that are facing ear. That will lower undesirable reflections. In fact, I've already done that after private conversation with @cskippy and almost eliminated narrow peaks on THD graph.

As promised to @Hands I'm making another sample for review (and yeah still waiting for reviews from all over the world where I've sent headphones long ago ;( )
Today I've received several parts from CNC router and motorized camera dolly. Let's try it.

Oh... I should select something artificial as a background ;) I have fake stone somewhere hidden in a cupboard :D
    Maybe for a next teaser.

Really cool thing you have going here, love to see stuff like this. I'm not sure how finalized you are with the design, but a couple thoughts/suggestions:

    - the connector being mounted at a 90 degree angle like that seems like a potential problem waiting to happen. People accidentally snag on their HP cables all the time, so I can see an instance where somebody cracks the housing because the end of the cable's mini connector will act as a lever and put a lot of force on the frame/connector on the cups when a snag happens. Since you're using removable cables, there will be cases where people use an even longer connector, creating an even bigger lever, making damage to the cups or connector even more likely (think 1/4" jack being used with a phone via adapter). The wall is kinda thin as you intended, so I'd try to angle it down as much as you can. If you can angle it even 30 degrees down from where you have it, I think it'll be much less likely you run into this issue.

    - I see your diaphragm traces extend beyond the moving area of the membrane - I'm assuming this is so you have a more uniform field. This is pretty cool and I'm not sure I've seen it done before, but I'm concerned about this affecting reliability. The trace is constantly crossing the border of the moving area (where the spacers clamp and sandwich the diaphragm), so I think constantly bending the metal trace in a bunch of places like that might lead to the trace eventually breaking or cutting out. It may be reliable for you so far, but keep in mind users listen at wildly different levels. You can give your design a stress test by playing very loud bass frequencies for a while.

    - I like how you incorporated one side of the magnetic system into the cups. I know Audeze mentioned BMW's design team implementing this change into their design, and it makes the mounting system much more practical. I used a separate piece for my PM but I think I'll try to redesign this way.

    - random questions: what is the diaphragm thickness? What method did you use to form the trace (chemical etch, light, printing, etc)? When you say your driver is 85mm are you referring to the edges of the spacer or the actual segment that moves? How 'deep' are your magnets? How thick are the spacers?

Anyways, keep up the good work!

Many people think that connector is mounted at a 90 degree. That's not true. Maybe because of the angle I've made a photo. Beleive me - angle is optimal. I'll make a photo on the head and you'll see this.

No, to maximize actual moving area.

On the edges diaphragm is almost motionless and i've rounded the edges of the spaces.

I've played Rammstein constantly during a week ( 7*24 hours ) on a really loud level and then disassembled headphones and examined membrane under microscope. No signs of degradation. Reliability is the key question in planar technology. I've achieved really good level. But if something happens - to swap a diaphragm takes ~5 minutes and it costs about 10$ per pair.

Thanks. Took me a while to make such decision.

    6 microns PET + 6 microns aluminium.

    Etching.

I'm not Audeze ;) Sure 70*85 mm is the open segment of membrane that moves. Outer diameter of the spacers is 105mm. Circle is a bit cutted as you see on photos and videos to mount magnets.

Magnets are long blocks 75*3*3 mm, spacers are 2mm each.

It took a while to receive next batch of all needed parts to produce another samples. so today I've sent to @Hands a specimen.
Thanks again for your interest. Hope you won't be disappointed.

Sent a sample to @Audio Zenith creator few days ago. A bit thrilling when you send your device to manufacturer ;)

@Garuspik Happy to see your labour bearing fruit and your product being tested by veterans finally. Looking forward to more reviews. Being a planar head I will ready to snatch a pair when ready right now I am assembling a pair for DIY Nhoords myself.

While parcel to @Hands is still in transit I've made another sample. Time for... fake carbon!
Sample that was sent to Hands include changes that were discussed with @cskippy :
    1) Better tension of diaphragms
    2) Felt glued to magnets to prevent undesirable reflections

Also still experimenting with pad rolling.
