12" woofer, I think that may just get you in the BWC if you give marv enough fine booze all at once.

Not sure if I like JBL just rehashing a 1968 design. Better trickle down that M2 waveguide know-how.

Glad to see passives from JBL. They should trickle that "ancient" technology up!

If I had time I'd try to sneak a listen before the show opens.

    Any word on MSRP?

    Available now at $2,500/pair:
    https://www.musicdirect.com/speakers/JBL-4312G-Bookshelf-Speakers

Which sounds like a lot, but then I googled the MSRP of my L112's in 1978 and with inflation they were $3500/pair.

Considering I bought those L112's for 200 bucks on craigslist though does make this seem like a bad deal.

Apparently their Aqua-Plas®-coated 12" wasn't all that? Seems weird to have two models that are nearly identical. 4429 and L100 I gotta get my ears on. Probably not the best for condo living though...

    rehashing old tech?

its a 12 inch + 5 inch mid + 1 inch tweeter. nothing old tech about that, this is how you build a good speaker.

makes no sense to me to compare the price of 30 years old L112 with the 4312g. the price of a single good 12 inch woofer is around 150$ today.

to me, and considering the overpriced "hi-end" offering, the 4312g is actually a bargain if they can deliver and id like to see more companies offering big format "bookshelve" speaker rather then seeing 5k usd tower speaker 2 ways with a 6.5 inch "woofer"

The price isn’t actually half-bad at 2500. What bugs me is the woofer/tweeter alignement. The design itself is from 1968, when directivity modelling and measuring wasn’t exactly a hard science. For example ever other JBL large bookshelf tries to allign tweeter and mid to be in a straight line.

P.S. The Magnat 15” monster that I linked to costs 370EUR here. That’s what I consider a fair price for these party boxes.

Weird, I missed that they also released the 4321SE recently with the same specs, cabinet and price point. It appears they've changed the woofer and mid driver in the 4312G, but I see no indication as to why such similar models both exist, or which is better for whom.

Maybe they didn't get the reception they were looking for when they unveiled the new 4312 the first time, so they decided to release it again.

It's not old tech, it's how you build a good speaker, but older and newer models in the same configuration shouldn't be compared? A good 12in woofer is around $150, but a 12in, 3-way at $2,500/pair is not overpriced because it compares favorably to 2-way, 6.5in tower speakers? Confusion abounds.

These would still do fairly well on their sides (provided driver matching is any good); my 4412A use the same arrangement and image very well, but are designed to be used horizontally.

I was never impressed with JBL's speakers (at least those that I had a snowball's chance in hell of affording and therefor tried to get ears on) back in the dark ages 35-40 years ago. Not to say they aren't better now, but I will never know as my situation now is far more more impermanent than that proverbial snowball. $2500, $25000, whatever. Presumably they have figured out how to both have and control bass, instead of just the former?

They should have never discontinued some of their greats. This is just one of the setups that works.
It's evident that tech innovation was not the goal.
Only thing I'm afraid of is that the box would have thin walls and wimpy bracing.

At 52.4 lbs (23.8kg), I'd hope that's not the case.

Going to listen to some 4429 and the local dealer made an interesting comment regarding the latest JBLs

"Currently I only have the JBL4429 monitors available for demo. We had the 4319, 4306 and 4307 and they all had issues of some sort so we decided not to carry anything below the 4429 (though the 4312SE is actually fantastic sounding)."

Model 4307 has good looking colour scheme though.
