If you like music before 1984 and especially music from the late 50s and early 60s, then there is no issue with content.

I wouldn't bother with vinyl if you look forward to new content. Perhaps other TT owners may disagree, but I've picked up some stinkers, especially for popular music.

That's exactly what the world is missing these days, great Hall & Oates lyrics!

However, you're out of touch, and I'm out of time...

    Me neither.

But I hate the world of super-high-cost turntables that look like they were stolen from London's Science Museum, and I love the idea of good/great reasonably-priced gear for playing records. And will always give it an affectionate glance even if I never play another record at home. Hence even reading this thread.

Is Sol going to be too much of a learning curve for Gen X ers like me that have been around vinyl some, and owned a turntable, but said turntable was a cheap Audio Technica with USB recording capability? Sol is very intriguing, but scary. I watched a YouTube video awhile back from RMAF 2014 and this guy from stereophile was talking about TT setup. Scary Schiit to the uneducated.

I have been contemplating orbit or fluance tt, but I'd like to buy a good quality tt and be done. Wondering if I should just buck up and wade into something like Sol. I'm not in a hurry.

Setting up a turntable isn't terribly difficult, but to get the best sound, and to keep from damaging your vinyl, there are steps to follow, and some tools to assist. I was able to do pretty well visually with this a long time ago in a life far, far away. But I'd really recommend just following instructions and print out some tools to assist. We didn't have affordable laser printers in the 70's and 80's.

Take the time to get it set up properly, and you will be rewarded.

Being unlazy enough to always replace the dust cover on your player, and keeping your albums clean is more of an ongoing price to pay for vinyl, and that's the pain-point I remember, not the setting-up of the stylus.

But I am looking forward to once again having a turntable, and the Sol looks like a winner from everything I've read.

Yeah... Somone want to point me to a vinyl 101 course/website. I don't think I've ever cleaned a record in my life. Other then to blow on it, ala NES cartridges.

These types of questions are actually probably best for the turntable advice thread, since it's more general, and may already contain the answer to the question.

Does this thing have a release date? Specs? Photos?

Apologies if it's in this thread, but in that case we need to bring back OP bookmarking.

Did you look at the first few posts? Several photos are there.

There is no published release date and there will be no specs or official photos published until it is released.

I'm sure there will be a dedicated set up thread here. More than a few enterprising YouTubers will have set up videos.

Baby steps. It's not that hard. Scratch a few records, send the unipivot arm flying about, get your sleeve caught on the stylus only to tear it off the cart. Silently destroy the inner grooves of your favorite record with a bad alignment. All these things are part of the experience.

It took Luke a week or two to be somewhat competent with the basics, and a few more years to be a Jedi.

There is always the easy path: digital

I don't know that I would say I hate the world of super high cost TTs but I definitely can't afford them. Im firmly in the reasonably priced category. I know I'll never get to the 100 percent but if I can to 80 percent of it or so I'm generally good.

The way I look at Sol is if it's what it is intended to be, it should be the last TT I ever have to buy. So I'm willing to spend more initially on it than say an Orbit or Project. It's a once I get it all set up it just is and will be for as long as I need it to sort of thing.

I don't mean stuff that is quality and costs accordingly; I mean stuff that is way overbuilt and looks it. I guess you probably know what I mean! I do love a quality thing, a well-made thing, a well-engineered thing, as much the next man. And that turntable rule (that the one you wanted forty years ago, is the one you still want... and still can't afford) would probably apply to me too if I was to go there again.

I think belts are pretty lame and I already have a respectable turntable. But if this thing sounds half as good as @purr1n claims and is actually priced under 1000, I will buy when it becomes available. You guys can screencap this and hold me to it.

Construct a DIY disc to go over the motor and make it a rim drive.

Dumb question to ask because I did not understand. What is rim drive? Is it Idler Driver TT?

Do you have AT LP120? If so, I believe that it has VTA, VTF, Azimuth adjustment capability so you can practice them while waiting to upgrade to SOL. No matter what type of TT, the basics are all same as far as I understand unless it is full auto without any adjustment capabilities. :)

Opportunity! Try different materials, claim different sounds.

Of course, whne it comes to the tie your own string type, of course there is a difference, because there are differences in how the thing physically works, or doesn't. This is more trouble than I ever wanted to go to with a turntable. Dial in one's own problems just so that one can fix them.
