Hey Guys, looking for a heads up on whether coverting the Yggdrasil from 220v to 110v is a DIY project or whether it must be done at the factory? I.e. does it involve changing the windings on the xformer(s) or is there more involved?

I don't know if DIY is possible, but the SchiitFerBrainz video on the Vidar makes it seem like it wouldn't be to hard for that one at least.

Otherwise, Schiit told me this in August of 2017:

I think I found the inspiration for Jason's "USB Solved" declaration regarding USB 5...

I’m sure @baldr is hoping this will be him once the next gen USB comes along...

I hope it is too, and am avoiding Gen 5 in the expectation of that. Meanwhile, I will continue to use the S/PDIF RCA connection to my Auralic Mini with the Yggdrasil and am building up a DigiOne Signature in order to use the S/PDIF BNC connection to my Gungnir Multibit.

    Meanwhile, my USB strategy is...

I've been thinking, which for me, is dangerous. I have a Gungnir + Freya modified (GungFreya) with the DAC output taken just past the DAC chips. Essentially, I guess, an "A0" analog setup that uses the analog section in the Freya. I like it better than my Yggdrasil A1 with a passive preamp. So the question for the other system is whether to upgrade the Yggdrasil to A2 or spend even a bit less to buy a Freya to go with it and do a similar analog bypass on the Yggdrasil. I have't heard from anyone who has attempted a YggFreya and how it might have turned out.

I had a Gumbreya and replaced it with a Gungnir Multibit A2 at one point. The A2 is better, more 3D and more resolving. I suspect Yggdrasil A2 would be better than Yggreya for the same reasons.

I haven't heard those options, but Yggdrasil A2 is end game gear for me. No it doesn't sound like live music, but what gear really does or can?

The thing is it's smooth, analog like, a deep enough black background, and... nothing annoys me so I spend my time listening to music. Probably there is no better option Schiit could offer now.

Right now of course Yggdrasil A2 is the pinnacle of Schiit’s DAC offerings, but Mike and Jason for sure have more tricks up their sleeve for the future:

I want for nothing with the Yggdrasil A2 but if they can figure out how to improve the Yggdrasil's output stage then that is one way to improve it. As I understand it though, the Yggys output is hamstrung due to the dac chips - the A2 might be a maxed out Yggdrasil so to speak. So any upcoming TOTL Schiit dac will probably be a different design and knock the Yggdrasil down a peg.

Any cd transport Schiit makes will have to be sub $300 -$400 to sell decently. I keep a very good transport around and while it is "diminishing returns" better than my computer source, it stays boxed up. The CD transport market was neglected for something like a decade and it will be hard to get folks excited other than curious people who have never owned a decent cd transport. Mike's remarks about destination clocks being king makes me way less interested in buying a cd transport.

You think Schiit is considering moving the clock from the SPDIF/Input processing board on Yggdrasil to the DAC/Analog board? That sounds like one expensive upgrade if they are committed to keeping present Yggys fully upgradeable.

I am pondering an amplifier swap to tweak a bit, TOTL tubes, as I wouldn't mind a touch more syrup (if it doesn't sound mushy), but until I read here that Schiit has created the next mind blower DAC, I am content with the sound of Yggdrasil A2 and have been since I got the update and given the Y2 time to warm up. They smoothed over that slight metallic sound, and cleaned up most of the haze of the A1 (which was never much, but it was noticeable after a while). There is still a touch of haze, but it's not the kind that annoys me endlessly. It's nicely randomized and doesn't grate on my nerves. The best praise I can give it is that I listen to music for longer without thinking about the gear.

Does the Yggdrasil accept a non-powered (only data) usb cable?

Not gen5: power is needed for the dirty side. Not sure about gen3.

Pretty sure the new post-gen5 one needs usb power too.

If that's a need, plenty of places do y cables that take data from one port and power from another, and for sane prices.

That sort of stuff is cheap enough it's worth looking for someone local-ish, save on postage. Maybe blue jeans cables? I know forza does them here in the EU, and the guys at iFi have a solution for that too.

Yes it does need USB power. if you don't want to buy another USB cable you can add iDefender to the signal path and plug an external power source

Thanks everyone. I was planning on trying a new cable and had the option with or without power. I will get the option with power.

Ps audio direct stream just upgrade their firmware and a good friend that have the DSD Sr. Just chat me raving about the improvement... excluding the hype, it would be nice if someone from here could demo this new firmware
