Beers I have had in the last 24 hours:

    Schlafly Tasmanian IPA is great
Founder Dark Penance is too boozy.
Miller High Life is the apple juice of beer. It's not actually that awful.

My father's beer was Miller High Life.

He was so happy because at one point when he combined a sale price with a mail-in coupon he was making a few $$ for every case he drank.

I'm drinking some right now as I'm done before 11 on Mondays and a 12-pack was on sale for under 8 bucks at Safeway. You can taste some acetaldehyde and dimethyl sulfide but not nearly as much as the current InBev cost-reduced Budweiser. Hopefully InBev will become too debt ridden to get out of the red should they buy SABMiller and have American and Chinese governments force them to shed Miller and CR Snow at cut prices; MolsonCoors and the PRC government have some ridiculous contractual buy out rights.

I am a huge fan of anything from Belgium, especially Chimay. Back when I was in California the price was somewhere around $6/bottle for Chimay Blue. Since I moved to France however I can find the same beer for the equivalent of $1.50 and the big bottle for about $4! Needless to say I have been drinking much more Chimay.

Cspirou. Lucky man. Chimay makes really great beers.
I think this years Sierra Nevada Octoberfest is very good. Not "best beer ever made" good. But really nice with food or for watching a ball game. Not sure, but I think they changed they way they were making it. More in the traditional German style according to my local beer/wine guy. IMHO a good quality to price option.

I agree. Sierra Nevada's Octoberfest is quite good. I think I actually prefer Ninkasi's Octoberfest beer a little bit more, but both are solid options for anybody who likes to enjoy seasonal beer.

Just went to the local beer cave and decided to treat myself. Got an Orval, La Trappe, La Chouffe and something from a super local brewerie called Brasserie des Garrigues. Just had the Orval and it was a very satisfying. The rest need time in the fridge.

One day I am going to have to get my ass to Belgium to try the Westvleteren.

You are my new favorite SBAF! am also a Belgium beer snob, loved the West12 from my 6 pack purchase here in amerika last year. (limited one time deal.)

any trip to Belgium, I'd be happy to take vows of silence when on Monastery property in turn for (repeated) drinking of their superb brews.

    Belgian beers are the best!

I like most beers but there are a few I don't like. I can't stand IPAs which was a downside when I was in SoCal since every local brewery just HAD to make an IPA. If I am starting the night an IPA is fine but drinking them all night is just too overwhelming. I went to one party where the geniuses decided to get a keg of Stone IPA. Stone! I can tell you I did not enjoy the beer pong that night.

Since I grew up in Texas I also have a soft spot for Saint Arnold's and Shiner. The equivalent for PBR in Texas were Lone Star tall boys, so I had a bunch of those at concerts.

In other beer related news I also made a beer braised pork shoulder with homemade sauerkraut. I would post pictures but it was so good that I ate it before I could take any pictures. :)

Orval is wonderful and it is one of the few beers I'd recommend trying to age if you're up for experimenting.

How long do you recommend aging? My parents have a cellar where the temperature stays pretty cool. I can just leave a bottle in there and literally forget about it for years.

That's up to you. Orval is bottled with Brettanomyces which will develop for a while. It will further dry out and change over time. If the place near you is running through rotation quick enough to get it somewhat fresh, 6~ months, then it would be worth buying them to build a collection if you're interested in trying it out. If you could get a semi-fresh one every 6 months that would be fun to let them age for a while and see how they develop.

I still have a couple of bottles of Westy 12 left. I save them for special occasions :)
I'd recommend Rochefort 10 as a very good alternative that is relatively easy to find.

I concur. the Rochefort 10 is a treat, fall back to Rochefort 8 as well for variety.

btw, heard tale that "long aging" of the Westy12 in bottles doesn't improve the taste after a year.
so I splurged and finished all 6 within 12 months.

    How was YFSoE ?

I haven't been too active on picking up anything new lately, but still curious to hear about the new stuff coming out.

I'm looking forward to Stone's Enjoy By Black IPA. California gets it first - so looking forward to the reports from the West Coast.

    Comments on beers mentioned:
Westy 12- yes, I would skip the 8 and spend it on the 12! Oh- I didn't get the limited US release, only the ones with no label and either 8 or 12 on the cap. Recommend paying lots of attention to the nose and experimenting in some different glass shapes + at different temps.
Little Sumpin' Sumpin'- I like the unlimited release better than the limited release and think this is a great widely available beer too.
Miller High Life- For those reading quickly, please note that we are NOT talking about Genuine Draft (ewww).

Drinking now: Heretic Hazelnut Porter for dessert.

On my wish list to try: Oskar Blues "Ten Fidy" finished in Appleton Rum Barrels or Maker's Mark barrels off-tap...

CEE TEE - Did you get to try the Equinox? (Lagunitas Limited Release) I went into it without knowing anything about it as it was a gift. It was actually a nice surprise and a very solid release from them in my opinion.
