Thought I'd make a thread. Discuss your favorite displaytech and anything that goes with it.

Just received my first oled(lg c8) and it's been mostly great except a nasty firmware bug that messes up the gamma. Waiting the recommend 200 hours before i calibrate, not yet decided if i'll get one and do it myself or have someone els do it.

What about you guys? Still rocking that plasma and waiting for microled? Did you calibrate it?

I have a C8 as well. A friend of mine uses one in his color grading suite and his before/after graphs when a professional calibrator came in are nearly 1:1 identical to the stock Technicolor settings. Once he showed me the results, it cured my nervosa, and I’ve just been enjoying mine out of the box.

I have a Panasonic 65FZ800 oled. Upgraded from an LG 55B6 oled.

Both were calibrated with an X-rite i1 pro spectrophotometer and Chromapure software. LG's colors can only be adjusted to an extend, all LG displays have a distinctive look of strong/reddish skin tones. I've calibrated one C8 too and it was slightly better in this regard, but still visible.

Panasonic wins on image quality. LG wins on everything else. Too tired to be more specific right know.

I have the B6 and wouldn't trade it for anything. I downsized from a 65" LED to a measly 55" OLED. Rearranged my whole room just to sit closer. Totally worth it. Overall a more well rounded, fulfilling experience than any LED or plasmas I've used in the past (owned myself or at a friend's).

I know plasma has true blacks as well, but the OLED seems to have a subjectively higher contrast ratio the moment you introduce any lighting into your environment. Maybe it's just the way the panel, glass, and coatings of the respective techs interact with ambient lighting, but it is what it is. OLED looks stellar as f**k in a well lit or totally dark room. Plasma suffered noticeably in anything above dim lighting.

So, OLED "pops" like LED. It has the cleanliness of LED. None of that plasma dithering/noise, which I saw even in the last gen Pannys before discontinuation. It doesn't suffer as much in brighter rooms but still isn't quite as bright as LED. Has some auto-dimming like plasma depending on level of white content on screen, but also less severe.

Some HDR content, like The Grand Tour, can be rather dim for some reason. Sometimes HDR games are as well. No idea why. I boost the dynamic contrast setting in these cases (or brightness in games), even if it's not technically accurate.

Also love the lack of motion blur and ability to have low input lag with the right settings.

I have mine calibrated for SDR content. Wasn't too bad out of the box with one of the pre-calibrated options. I don't think folks had quite a grasp on HDR calibration early on, so mine isn't calibrated there necessarily beyond basic settings.

Yeah out of the box colors look accurate if i take the calibrated plasma as reference point.
@Hands i completely agree with your points, especially about noise. It was like an added move grain that forces you to sit further than the resolution would allow. Mine is a last gen GT60 fwiw.

I also did the same as you regarding viewing distance, first i thought I'd buy a b8 65" then said f**k it and moved my chair closer and saved quite a bit of money.

I bought a 65" LG C8 around the Super Bowl but have had it sitting in its box taunting me until last week. Renovation took longer than expected but finally have this beauty on its stand. I followed the calibration settings from Rtings to start off, which is basically turning off everything extra and setting it to the ISF modes depending on room light. Super duper pleased with the results. I occasionally get some lip sync issues, but haven't been able to nail it down. Main source is an Nvidia Shield through a Denon X3400H.

Ya I skeptically jumped into the OLED train with the LG 55EF9500 right around when they first came out.
It's been 4 years, and I've had zero burn in, or issues with the TV. I do run it at 25/100 brightness tho and never leave static images on it. There's some forum out there that gives the best settings for accurate color, basic stuff took around 5 minutes to dial in. Don't have the ocd to use a color calibrator on it.

It completely changes my perception of how good a panel could look. Ever since then I've been waiting for the day oled PC monitors come out in the main stream.

I exclusively only use a media PC with it. One thing that makes this display awesome for me, is that I can use a black screen saver on 1m duration. This means whenever I want to use the TV, it instantly wakes up (because black screen = oleds off). This does mean the TV is technically still on, but it's had no adverse affects on it running it that way for 4yr now.

Still enjoying my new tv, seems to improve with more hours on it. They said 200h break-in not sure how accurate that is but if it gets better great if not I'm still happy.

Also quite happy with out of the box color accuracy might not even bother with a calibration.

I'll have to partially disagree here, but only with respect to the Samsung F8500 (see RTings review). Had mine for almost five years and paid less than $900.

I have noticed some of this and depending on the content the dirty screen effect. One quirk of the F8500 is the antiglare filter which shows up as very faint horizontal bands on certain bright material. How noticeable also depends on viewing angle.

LG C7 here. Considered springing for a C9 but think the tech needs another year before the HDMI 2.1, eARC, and Variable Refresh Rate stuff properly matures.

Hmm, I was basing what I said mostly on the Panasonics, given they seemed to dominate the plasma market. Maybe the Samsungs had their own sets of pros/cons and weren't like Panny.

LG55B7 owner here. I knew from the first time I saw OLED at Best Buy it was a game changer. I think it was something like $3000 for a 1080p OLED TV!

Grabbed mine last year just before the new models hit for $1200 as it was the last unit and was further reduced $200...so I decided to also buy a PS4 Pro lol

It’s been a blast using the TV. No more light bleed, shitty viewing angles, VA gamma cone, or TN gamma shift. Response time is fantastic and input lag is acceptable for me although I would like it lower for competitive multiplayer games.

I haven’t bothered professionally calibrating yet as I’ve been happy with a tweaked Game mode and Expert Dark.

I've got an F8500 plasma as well (60 inch), paid way more than $900 (when brand new) and don't regret it. Those horizontal bands aren't yet annoying enough to spring for an OLED. I didn't get it professionally calibrated but am using "D-Nice" settings from the AVS forum and am still enjoying the hell out of 1080p content in a room that I can get totally dark.

Only issue I've had through the years is with the remote control (minor inconvenience, just use the joystick on the back of the TV to power on/off). I don't use any of the "smart TV" features; all content through Sony PS3 (gave up on gaming a while ago).

Moved up to this from Panny 5080HD when F8500 was widely available.

Yeah, I'll probably use mine until it dies. $999 was the price for the 51" when Amazon and other retailers were clearing them out at discontinuation (fall 2014), but I got a bad unit initially so Amazon gave me a partial refund when they made the swap. Almost went for the 60", but didn't (and still don't) have the space. OLED is cool and I'm always wowed when I see at retailers, but I'd rather save money and wait for all the new HDMI, HDR, etc. standards to actually get, you know, standardized.

DeWayne actually calibrated my set in-person a couple years ago. Mine had a pretty bad red push, which is immediately obvious when switching back to "Movie" mode. It was really cool seeing him work and having him show me how changing the value of something by just 1 could introduce noise into the image.

D-Nice is a legend. I used to be glued to AVSforums waiting for his settings year after year.
