Personally I didn't find any difference playing my HD600/650 from the SE or the XLR out of the 789.

On the other hand, I always keep both SE and balanced cables for all my cans just in case. So, I would say go ahead, mate.

Interesting thread. This amp is on my radar as I need to use headphones (again) at work.

Available again....in NOVEMBER. Honestly, I think massdrop has lost their way. I don't mind a month wait, but they don't seem to be discounting enough for the whole "group price" thing to be a factor anymore. If we aren't getting a good price, why should I wait months? THX needs to find better partners who can market and sell the tech in a traditional way. Massdrop or Drop is just a source of frustration to me.

Buy used, or buy other things perhaps. Don't support businesses you don't like.

How do you know it isn't that much of a discount offered? What importance is it having something rightnow instead of waiting a few months for a meaningful upgrade? I agree Massdrop has had some missteps along the way— there's a whole thread here documenting that— but that doesn't mean they're on a permanent shitlist for many people, or that they deserve to be.

I think massdrop and THX are aware of the amp's current popularity, so the availability coming in waves might be a marketing strategy to keep its "exclusivity" as long as they can before making them available in stock. (maybe, who knows)

and like @Lyer25 said, I would buy it used, especially if you have not heard the amp yet. I believe same thing happened with the HD6XX when it was fairly new. The used price will eventually go down over time, if you have the patience to wait.

I actually just found one from the SBAF FS thread yesterday so I would just keep your eyes open for one

Based on what I have read in this thread, I preordered one. It should sound better than my LC V2 using Cord 2Qute DAC. Hoping to upgrade my computer digital sound headphone system.

I have ended up with the Monolith portable THX amp/dac.

I like having one setup for home and office. Especially when my home listening means outdoor under the stars as much as I can.

When I was a kid, I owned three of those plastic Chevies. 1963 split window coupe, 1966 convertible and a 1969 coupe . They no longer interest me in my old age. I just love German engineering.

This doesn't add anything of substance to the discussion about this amp. All you did was subtlety take a big fat shit all over the amp in question without even reviewing it, under the guise of promoting a different product because you can't make up your adolescent like mind.

Stop posting things like this. Think before you word vomit. Have some forethought and restraint. Be a better sbaf member. Nobody likes this.

@frenchbat I understand the point you were making but I would choose that Caddy over that Corvette any day. I wouldn't pass up the opertunity to be the mac daddy of SBAF.

Claud was already chastised by lowercase-g gaspasser and Sonorus [sic], among several others. Uppercase-C recently resolved to do better after realising talk like this wasn't in the spirit of the forum, something that had to be pointed out as he was accustomed to Head-Fisms. Dogpiling is one thing (I'm very guilty of it too, hahaha) but you're kinda doing it after the fact— his most recent post on here was playing off some pretty funny repartee by French Bruce Wayne.

I will agree it did seem like he dropped a stinky pileo'poo on the amp, which was in bad taste considering he doesn't seem to have gotten ears on it yet and hasn't offered any valid reason for doing so (unlike some senior members who've proactively shot down potential stinkers before group funds were put at risk, which I can get behind).

I wasnt aware of any other interactions with Claude, so I wasn't dogpiling. Not intentionally.

"Dogpiling" was lazy writing on my part really— was half-watching a "horror" film with the family, most others fell asleep and I took my phone out to try and keep awake haha. Either way, poor choice of words. Also, I just remembered it happened in shout box so was out of public eye, argh.

I'm shutting up now, just wanted to let know that if I came across as a bit... cross, that isn't the case, was just distracted. Sorry if I might have offended or caused any problems.

    No worries.

I mean, the thing is, some of my greatest lessons came from not only failure, but embarrassment. I fall more into the Machiavellian school of thought when it comes to the internet and dealing with stuff. It comes from years of dealing with trolls and strawmen arguments too. You get to a point where you don't care anymore... tough love becomes the only love, and being polite is not only unproductive but can be dangerous in the long run... because wounds don't heal from kisses, they fester and rot.

No good deed goes unpunished and all that. In the end I just want people to get better, not wither and die from humiliation. Because I used to be like that and I only learned from having the shit kicked out of me.

Unfortunately misery and suffering seem to be life's greatest teachers.

Guys, I am sorry for the distraction. I hope to not do it anymore. I was not trying to schiit all over the THX AAA 789. I have been looking for a good neutral amp to use with HiRez. I initially ordered it knowing from reviews here that it might not be good with Senn HD 800, but I have other, more forgiving headphones. Then while reading the thread about HD 800 amps, I read about the Phonitor. More bucks but just an outstanding amp, and there was also a stripped down E version.
While searching the internet for more Phonitor info, Amazon popped up so I went there and found a deal on a refurbed E. Damn, just what I was looking for. I don't need the meters etc. as long as its the same sound quality as the higher priced spread as expressed in this forum's Phonitor X and E thread.
Anyhow, I am sorry to have caused a ruckus. I did not try to shit on that amp. According to many people, its a really nice little reasonably priced amp. I am not a troll, straw man , etc. Just a 71 year old audiofool trying to interact and expand my knowledge. Peace Love you' all.
