I am thinking of ditching W10 since it adds too little for me compared to W8/8.1.

It is pleasant and all but I am not completely comfortable with its settings.

I did not install W10 on my desktop because I like W8/8.1 more. I have grown to like W8/8.1 as long as I have my start button + start menu. (f**k yeah Classic Shell!)

How has your experience been so far?

I liked 8, I think the Metro UI is sleek as hell, but now I'm on 10 I'm not going to go back even if I did like 8 more (which I'm not sure). Functionality-wise I don't notice anything different that I can/can't do on either that I bother with.

In the end both are sleek, imo, and a great experience improvement and aesthetic improvement over previous versions. 10 is also a little more lean on memory so I'm sticking with it.

Stupid start button doesn't work half the time. I can't be the only one with this issue.

What do you mean? Mine works 100% with the Windows key as well as clicking it. I'm only having issues trying to eject my Sansa Clip Zip sometimes from the USB taskbar section. Otherwise I can eject it other ways, but it's less convenient that way.

Hrm, both of those are working for me. Not sure how to fix it.

I'm not alone from my brief google research. Just waiting on a patch I guess.

Same here, have to reboot every other day to get the interface to play along. Really f'in buggy so far, but a nice improvement when everything works.

I am thinking of putting W8 or Linux on the W10 laptop. If I can live without the Office Suite Linux it is.

My experience with win 10 upgrade is it didn't............... Error out 4 times over several hours. Tried all the know fixes, nada.

One last try is to totally uninstall avast antivirus and give it ago again. I have 3 laptops to upgrade so probably will try not on my main one again.

As for Linux, Libre Office Suite works well for me.

I am going to give Ubuntu a go and ditch W10. I still have my W7 installation DVD so the back up is present.

W10, something about it for me is not right. The privacy settings made me really think. I went W.T.S.F. and the alarm light is still flashing.

Reinstalled Ubuntu on my laptop a little while back and I was amazed at how good things are. It's like a little lightweight Windows OS. My main machine's gotta stay W10 though.

My "main machine" runs on W8/8.1 build 9200 and I like it. The smoothness of W8 once you have made some settings is great.

I don't recall what it was. Hardly use my laptop these days, especially for listening.

Personally haven't had any issues. I play video games, I watch movies, I listen to music. It does what I need to do and I haven't had any issues so far.

The upgrade thing was a little BS then having to go back and do a fresh install was just a waste of time but aside from that everything has been smooth. The only issue I would complain about is how companies seem to be so far behind with driver support (Yes, I am talking to you Creative Labs).

I'm not OJ, but used Lubuntu for some time. Deadbeef is a very good sounding lightweight player.

Lubuntu 14.04 LTS is installing on the second laptop. Smooth installation but you have to tell the BIOS to ignore the legacy OS, stop dual booting and have a drive or disk ready.

Microsoft can keep its spyware OS.

I had been using Windows 8 from the very start on both a tablet and a desktop pc. Upgraded to 8.1 once that got available. Two weeks ago I updated to Windows 10. Here are my thoughts (of course I've only been using it for a limited time, so these are not exhaustive of the differences):

    Whats great compared to 8/8.1?

1.) Continuum is freaking amazing. The ability to run the WinStore Apps in windowed mode on the desktop like you would any 'legacy' software is great. I'm actually using a selection of apps (specialist media players; corrency converters; weather; password manager) on my desktop now which I never touched under 8/8.1 because the whole interface shitfing was cumbersome. Now you have these beautifully designed applications that load extremely quickly and behave just like any other app: Except you KNOW they're virus free, you dont have to deal with individual installers and updaters for every little freeware shit etc. I LOVE this.

2.) The design: Windows 10 is iterating on 8.1 which was iterating on 8 which was iterating on WP7 which was iterating on Zune etc. I like it. We're still quite a bit away from total visual consistency, but all in all its good (for example the new settings).

3.) Native compatibility: ISO's (since 8), FLAC, MKV - all supported natively. No need to f**k around with shitty and less shitty third-party applications. MKV is handled just like any MPEG or WMV file - including preview thumbnails in the explorer. I like it a lot. Native FLAC support is of course especially noteworthy on a forum such as ours. Playback of media files using DLNA to DMRs in the network seems simplified as well.

4.) The integration with Office 2016: This isnt strictly speaking a windows feature, but I love the small changes Office 2016 brings to the table. Small touches like the 'Pick attachment'-dialog in Outlook now displaying among other things a list of the last used documents - this is very smart. Its stunning this hasnt been done before.

5.) The ability to scroll inactive windows. This sounds like a small thing but its huge for me. I always work with more than one window open at a time (say a Word window and a OneNote or PDF window next to each other). Now I can scroll through these documents without having to swap between active windows. Its kinda hard to explain without demonstrating. Either way, it is toggleable and I love it.

6.) Various small touches: The explorer 'quick access' view (Very handy and useful. Again: Stunning this hasnt been done before.); the new calculator app (pretty and much more functional than the old one); the ability to log in using a pin code (very smart and obvious as well).

    Whats bad compared to 8/8.1?

I HATE how Microsoft caved on a couple of design decisions because of internet haters. This relates mostly to the touch interface and continues a trend from 8 to 8.1. The gesture-based touch control paradigm? - Virtually gone. Stoopids need clearly visible buttons to tap on. Stoopids are used to this from crApple iShits and androids. Stoopids cant learn two simple moves. Want to manipulate an object (say a live tile)? Used to be you could flick up on the object in a very quick and easy motion. Stoopids didnt understand. Stoopids were used to different and worse from competitors. Stoopids won. Now its long-press and hold all over again. The adress bar that used to be on bottom in the touch interface internet explorer in order to be close to the virtual keyboard? A decision utterly intelligent and beloved by everyone? - Gone. Stoopids are used to the address bar being on top. A centralized place to access settings for every application in the right slide-out pane? - Gone. Stoopids didnt understand. Stoopids need always visible buttons with cogwheels or wrenches on them. Stoopids won. Now every application (even MS native apps) hide their settings in a different place. Also: f**k hamburger menus. Horrible f'ing design paradigm. Especially in the upper left corner - the hardest to reach spot. Then again crApple does it this way, millions of stoopids eat that shit up as if it was chocolate cake, so MS breaks.
Basically if you're using Windows 10 on a primarily touch-device, 8(.1) was A LOT better. Now if feels like a piece of shit android or iPad. Tap, tap, tap, tap like a retard.

Also: There are still some bugs and rare instabilities, because the OS is very young. My GPU driver crashes and reboots about twice a week (Intel Skylake iGPU), sometimes browser windows lock up when resizing. Minor stuff really.

    What am I neutral on?

Virtual desktops. I dont use them. I never will. But lots of people apparently do, so here they are. At least the function is somewhat hidden, so its not the ultimate noob-trap. Have fun explaining to computer illiterates that there are multiple desktops now.

The start menu. It looks pretty and functional alright, but the full screen startscreen on 8/8.1 was certainly more functional by allowing you to reach a lot more objects. Additionally its a lot easier to memorize where stuff is on a 2D plane (left-right; top-bottom) instead of in a onedimensional list. I keep going back and forth between the 8.1 startscreen and the 10 startmenu. Luckily you can pick your poision in the settings.

The new system for Onedrive integration. I thought the Win8/8.1 system of Onedrive integration was very smart all around (albeit a little buggy with folders not communicating the 'make available for offline use' setting to everything inside). The new Onedrive integration works flawlessly so far, but manipulating files that are NOT stored locally is certainly more complicated now (=> requiring you to access Onedrive through the browser). On the other hand the options to share on Onedrive straight out of the explorer are really nice. All in all its a wash.
