I believe that a moron cannot hide the fact that he's a moron for long. This one hid it much less than others, lol.

Have fun in the cult of ASR Johnny Boy.

Ok ok lets bring this back on topic.

What are some cheaper tube amps I should be looking for if I want a more tube like sound for like $500ish and it goes well with HD600? After looking at the Valhalla 2 and recommendations from that thread, it appears the sound is too upfront and less tube like for me.

Seems like his agenda was clear, stir up dust and be a d-bag here so he'd have ammunition to look cool at ASR. At least he did it all in the name of science... ;)

And people are ok with the racism in the thread, and now the guy is claiming he is an Atheist Indo. However, he speaks like he is from the Island culture (people talk casually about racism to the point they don't consider it to be racist).

Oh well, another reason that ASR is shit. Lets move on from it.

As @ergopower mentioned you can try a low cost powered usb hub. My experience with usb audio is to keep everything off of the usb bus except dac if you really want the best sound. In some cases though audio quality can be very good and only slightly improved from having a few things on the bus.

If you can, maybe share a Windows drive on another machine with the Surface via ethernet and just use the usb for dac. I used to use externally powered usb hdd on the music computer for years. It was pretty good. Then I began sharing a external usd hdd music drive connected to my daily desktop via ethernet to my main music playing commputer. There was a noticeable benefit in my system.

Just be sure you have your music on a separate drive from the os on the shared machine. Music sounds noticeably worse if played back from os drive, ssd or not.

    Good luck

Hi, guys. I’m interested in upgrading my office setup from a Fulla 2. Looking for something that places nice with JVC HA-FD01 and KSC-75. Willing to pay up to $350. Right now I’m leaning toward Asgard 3 with 4490 card, but want to throw this out there to see if there are any other good, affordable AIOs I don’t know about. Not considering Hel right now, as I think any improvement would be too incremental over Fulla 2. Would consider Modi 3 w/ Magni 3+, so a small stack isn’t out of the question. Portability not a key consideration. Open to good non-Schiit gear too. Any suggestions appreciated!

I'm about to get off the computer, but I noticed you have IEMs. Normally I wouldn't use any Schiit Amp due to they are mostly too sensitive with IEMs (a little vol knob adjustment and the IEM is at max volume). You can always try the iFi Match but it could change the sound of the IEM to something that isn't up to your liking.

I been happy with the Modi 3 and THX AAA 789. I found the THX to be excellent with IEMs due to really low gain mode on the unit. I run anything IEM just fine on it. However, the THX brand new is $400 from Drop and the Modi 3 new is another $100 before shipping. YMMV

@monacelli , I don’t know anything about those JVCs, but the KSC-75s don’t scale much once you have a decent, basic amp. I scaled down from a Modi 2 / Magni 3 to a Fulla 2 and didn’t feel like I gave up much when using KSC-75s.

Is there some type of weirdness common to open dynamic/planar headphones somewhere in the 3-7K range? I've been in this hobby a decade and through a lot of gear and am starting to realize almost every headphone I've sold has been due to some fatigue factor in the mid/upper mids. It was very noticable with the JDS Atom but has been there through NOS DACs, tube hybrids, etc.

I've never heard it in a portable headphone, my Beyerdynamic T70s(8K deathspike is there but less objectionable,) or the STAX SR-5 I ran for a time. I don't know how to describe it and am not sure exactly where in the frequency band it is, it's more something I feel, and find rapidly fatiguing. I'm at a loss how to deal with it beyond sampling closed or semi-open headphones.

    @monacelli

I had ksc 75 for years and agree with @crazychili.

And I have owned dozens of iems over the years and some fairly good ones in the day, just not as crazy priced as some are today.

If it were my money, I would look at something like a Leckerton which always sounded very good to me without costing a ton. And they are iem friendly. Another avenue I might suggest would be one of the ifi units like the idsd micro if you want to spend more. I have owned a number of Magni and Modis and never have kept them very long. But I am in the minority here in that regard.

Thanks, guys. I shouldn’t have been quite so specific. Those are my everyday drivers at the office right now, but I’m also looking for something that can drive over-ear closed backs (like an Aeon 2). So I’m really looking for something with a 1/4” jack and a little juice. But many thanks for all suggestions so far!

Virtually all full sized headphones will have some sort of resonance/reflection/witchcraft issues in the treble range since the wavelengths are in that same order of magnitude as the cup size. Usually some trickery with damping materials and fluffier pads will squish that out, or the use of dsp.

There's also the pressure to consider that headphones place on the back of the temples and jaw area. Listening fatigue and a tiny physical discomfort over a period of time can feel remarkably similar. I take my glasses off for example, because I won't even realize it but that mild pinch over time makes me start to feel anxious (and it also skews my glasses/affects my vision just a *tiny* bit, which starts to mess with my perception too)

Vali 2 or MCTH should do, depends on tubes. ZDT Jr. should also be a good choice judging from the impressions I've read on here. I'd vote for SW51 myself but the sound is not exactly tube-like.

First, thanks for adding me to your group. It seems very helpful, especially finding the Schiit Compendium.

Next, Has anyone had a problem with their Harmony 650 selecting the right input on a Freya+? I program and indicate the inputs used, but since the Freya scrolls thru inputs and does not skip or go directly, My Harmony never gets the right input for music or TV. Any experience with this? Thanks.

Hey there Allen, welcome. In case you missed it, there’s a big banner on the top of the pages with links to read the form rules as well as a link to a thread to introduce yourself. Please do that.

Also in general, please do not start threads for small one-off type topics like this. That’s not the way we do things here. In general you’ll want to find an existing thread to post your question in. For instance, in this case, the best thread would probably be the Schiit Freya or Freya+ thread. When in doubt use the “All purpose advice” thread. You can browse the forum topic list, or use the search tool to find any of these.

Limiting the creation of new threads helps keep the noise down on the forum and makes sure that everyone can find the things they’re looking for, rather than spreading information and conversations all over the place about the same topics.

Looking for suggestions on a $100max gaming headset that would also be a good introduction to HiFi sound for someone (gift) who has never experienced good headphone sound but really needs a new headset for gaming. Or does such a thing not exist and gaming sets have boosted base? Funny thing is he a musician but has never gotten into non live music so I'm trying to open his eyes a bit.

Sennheiser PC37x would probably be my go to without further info/opinions
