Poll: Magni Apostolic Edition Interest

Do you want a Magni Apostolic Edition? What color should it be?

  1. No way, I don't want a $99 amp with less than 105db SINAD and 100db of feedback!

    MODERATOR EDIT FOR NEW THREAD

An evolved Magni that is no respecter of measurements - but seeks only to please ear god alone

This is an interest thread for an Apostolic edition of a Magni to express to @schiit that we would like such a thing. No guarantees of course. And I don't know if this could be a limited run limited to SBAF or even go outside.

The point is to have an amp that we think subjectively sounds great. That is even better than 3+, or at least different with more distortion, maybe their own twist on slight euphonic coloration a la Luxman gear, or as I mentioned a $99 Aegir. And to have everybody at ASR mock us for our stupidity. Yes, I would very much like that.

We already know that @schiit did as much as possible to make both a chip and discrete design measure as good as possible. Now let's hear what @schiit can do to make a good sounding design without any regards to measurements.

--original post from original thread starts here:

This is super-interesting. I could definitely see that the Magni 3+ was an attempt to create a more organic-sounding solid state amp. Compared to its predecessor and the Heresy, it has a more 3D soundstage and it is less dry sounding than your typical op-amp device. These qualities are traditionally associated with good tube amps. I do think that in the current measurement-obsessed climate, it would be very risky to release a less than 100dB SINAD amp, especially when targeting a very broad audience. I wonder if it would be possible and cost effective to have a "Measurement/Awesome" toggle switch instead of the gain switch...I kind of treat my gain switch like that anyway. One mode would have great measurements and the other would sound great. Not that these two are mutually exclusive :)

I agree with Purr1n. I'd think that the smart thing for Schiit would do would be to directly put the measurement dogma up against an amp that is designed explicitly to sound great (rather than to measure). That way people could get a stark contrast between two different design philosophies. Given that Schiit is putting out an amp that measures extremely well, I think they have more than enough leeway to also release something that doesn't measure so well, but isn't aiming to in the first place. Sure, some people might crap on it, but ultimately, I have to think that the better-sounding amp will win out (though that may just be the naïve optimist in me speaking).

As it is, it seems that (at least from what I've read) the Magni 3+ and the Heresy don't have fundamentally different sounds, especially when the Heresy is turned to high gain. That's sort of a shame, because you'd think that the whole point of releasing two amps at the same price-point would be to showcase two different sorts of sound. Perhaps Schiit's point, though, is that Op-amp and Discrete design needn't deliver vastly different sound signatures.

As far as SINEAD goes: Sorry, I Need Extra Audio Distortion.

You can basically already do this now by comparing the Heresy to the Vali 2.

Wanted something solid-state. The Vali 2 is too obvious because it has tubes. Jason mentioned the Magni 3+ is a $99 Vidar. I'd like to hear a $99 Aegir.

Love to read "Not Recommended" to be adhered to by a segment of the population. And the "Subjectively Neato" crowd being mocked as being dumb.

I voted all silver, but a transparent chassis would be neat. I'd definitely buy one regardless of color, even if it was schiit brown.

As the creator of Zune, I would imagine Amir would appreciate a Magni in Schiit Brown.

Why not add a variable saturation knob and a -1.5dB/octave sloping switch too? Just to piss off the number-sluts.

I could be way off base, but my assumption is that Asgard 3 was an attempt at what is being asked for here. Don't know how the 99.00 price point and/or smaller chassis would affect sound quality, but I assume both have some impact.

I voted for transparent because I'm nerdy that way but the opportunity for a Schiit product to come in brown is too rich.

    In fiber.

A tiny Aegir that can power my Sennheisers at work? Of course I'd buy that. An evolved Magni that is no respecter of measurements - but seeks only to please ear god alone - I can't imagine a better way to round out this latest Thunderdome.

Allowing two votes in case Scotty hasn't come back from the future to invent transparent aluminum yet.

This is interesting. As a self avowed objectivist, I admit curiosity. Purrin, do you know something about this that you are hiding? :)

    What would be expected measurements?
