I also had a really nice, informative chat with Craig this morning. Really interesting to learn about the Black Widow 1 and 2.

We also talked about the Studio Jr, and it looks like one is going to be joining my stable very soon.

Sad to see a great enthusiast company going though.

This. Completely get it if he doesn't, but if he does, well... then I can only say I hope to be able to repay the favor someday. I also see myself (most likely against my better judgement) potentially trying to tweak the designs slightly.

Regardless, yes, EC closing was something that we all knew would happen eventually (i.e. retirement) but it came too soon... *non-sarcastically cue sad violin music* Shame it had to happen to a maker of such great amps and not a questionable assembler of shoddy op amp arrays.

Still totally taken by my Af, but dropped Craig a line just in case something else magical is still left in his cabinet of wonders...

Having been an owner of a ZDSE, ZDS, Studio T, another ZDS and now a SJR, it's sad to see Craig go. I've never had the pleasure of seeing him in person, but I think his "grumpiness" on the Internet has been somewhat exaggerated on Marv's part. As you can see in the video link below (from 01:15), he just might be the most wholesome guy you'll ever meet.

On a side note, we also have Justin and Jason from 9 years ago. BHSE looks pretty much the same as it is now, while Schiit has just released Bifrost, their very first DAC (time sure flies). Funny how I currently own a gear from all three of them: Bifrost 2 feeding SJR/HD800SDR and BHSE/SR-007MK2.

Yes, Craig is quite different in person, and a delight to have a conversation with. Short, curt internet answers don’t fit his in person demeanor.

I do hope he contributes to the DIY community, that would cap off a great career in audio for sure.

A tip of the fedora to you Craig!!!

Just spitballing here, but something like if Bottlehead were to do the heavy lifting on parts sourcing and instructions, and dealing with rubes that can't point a soldering iron in the right direction, using* Craig's circuit designs, could be pretty f'ing cool.

Edit: * "uses" meaning with some sort of licensing/IP retribution, of course.

Sorry @jexby, that was me :p Craig was offering the BW1 with an extra shunt supply (same as on BW2) for $900 in perfect condition, and there was no way I could pass on such a good deal. Can't wait to compare with my 3F when they both arrive sometime next week.

Would love to read your specific comparison. I normally drive my Verite Closed, Eikon, and Focal Clears out of a Gngnir MB > BW 2 chain and have often wondered how much of a up/down/side grade a 3F would be.

As a BW1 owner, that is a ridiculous deal! Congrats! Would love to hear the comparisons...

The Moth 2a3 and EC BA are a couple of the best sounding amplifiers I've heard. The ZD and ZDT with properly paired up headphones were plenty good enough to call it quits with a system. Around the time I got into the hobby, it was EC/Moth and Singlepower for the niche tube amps. I unfortunately (or fortunately, because I did enjoy the amplifier) went down the Singlepower route before he went all nutty.

I still kind of regret not building Craig's DIY boards, just because. I would love it if he put some designs up for DIYers or found second life ala Cavalli via another manufacturer. The Balancing Act is still my favorite looking and sounding amp ever. It was just never in the realm of possibility to own for me.

I have been a big fan of Craig’s amps (and I know Marv had a lot to with Af) for the past couple of years. I started out with S7 which led to BW2 and then I went whole hog and bought an Aficionado. Luckily, I had a great buying experience with EC. I recently acquired a ZDS (thanks again @captkirk) and it is a testament to what a great loss EC closing will be to audio. I wish Craig and Judi the best in their future endeavors.

I've been researching an AF, but I contacted Craig and he has a few others available.

My question for those who have heard these pairings, what EC below would be the best to drive original pre-Fazor LCD-2s? Looking for synergistic matching rather than specs.

    • Zana Deux (non-SE)

Possibly find a second hand Balancing Act?

My first preference would be to purchase direct from Craig. He doesn't get anything from second hand sales.

FYI: I’ve tried to purchase a Balancing Act from Craig but he didn’t have enough parts to complete one. So you’ll have to keep the search within the list you provided.
