Doesn't sound any worse than half the stuff Bob Dylan has put out.

The Rutles!! RIP Neil. You did great job as Ron Nasty. And he wrote all the songs!

Rock is alive and well if you know where to look. To echo what @TheIceman93 said, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are my current obsession. Give them a few minutes of your time, they might be yours too. Such an amazing, diverse band - and you can't beat two drummers!

It takes a very brilliant musician to sound bad on purpose. I love this song. The nuances are so superb. Even the collision with the mic stand at the end is perfect.

I acknowledge Dylan as one of the all-time-great song writers, but I have been known to leave the house when I knew someone was going to play all four sides of a double album. I'll take his songs performed by, eg The Band, please.

Already a big fan! Just forgot to metion them in previous post. I'll be checking out other recommendations in this thread too, just haven't had time the last couple days. The one thing about music discovery is the it does take time.

Thanks for posting. There are some duds in the psydadelic movement which I'll post later...

thanks for the recommendations! I love Other Lives. Their previous album as well. I also love the new album by Caamp even more. So good.

I hate to say this, but I didn’t like any of the other music you posted on first listen. I did add them to my Tidal library though and will give them another shot. They sounded a little sentimental or something?

either way, not rock music in the slightest. :(

I’ve gotten really into sludge metal in the void of good ....uh normal rock or whatever. Indie Rock? There’s a lot more great sludge metal than just Sleep and Earthless. So much. But maybe that’s best for another thread...

Here’s an encouraging article in today’s NYTimes about a big rise in guitar sales during the pandemic. For those stuck behind the paywall, the key points are that whereas guitar sales had been sliding for many years (to the point where Gibson was in danger of going out of business), now sales are way up, with Fender seeing its biggest volume ever. Seeking solace and news ways to entertain themselves, youngsters are driving the rise in the popularity of guitars, especially young women, and online instructional videos are a central part of this trend. Here’s hoping this turns into a 2020s rock resurgence.

Separately, for nerdy indie fans (and others), music-map.com is fun and can be a good way to discover new bands. I suspect it works better for more obscure artists (Otoboke Beaver are there for you, @Deep Funk) than for those bands with wider appeal. I particularly enjoy getting riled up about some of the incongruous associations: I’m sorry, The Red Hot Chili Peppers really do not belong next to Nirvana. Nor, for that matter, do Radiohead.

    ---

How many punk rock kids does it take to change a lightbulb? Three. One to hold the chair, one to change the lightbulb, and one to say how punk rock it is.

How many emo kids does it take? None. They all sit around in the dark and cry about it.

How many indie rock kids does it take? [snootily] You don’t know?

Yeah! Buy guitars like I should have in high school and just play them. And for f**k sake sing sad songs.

Here’s a more complex song that is. Just crap to me but should be good it’s got a lot of good stuff going for it. Interesting sound and rhythms but it’s just too f'ing happy. This kind of psychedelic music can’t be parade music.

I'm not sure I've seen Son Lux mentioned yet? You can argue the definition of Rock and whether they fit since it's not guitar/drum-centric, but it's certainly not happy/jingly/indie stuff with no substance:

How many prog rock kids does it take to change a lightbulb? If they are Dream Theater fans, at least five. If they are Rush fans, three.

How many post rock kids does it take? Nobody knows, you might have to explain them the context of what it means to change a lightbulb.

How many Metal kids does it take? One, by crowd-surfing over the mosh-pit and after it is done the light show can continue.

How many art rock kids does it take? If it is artistic enough how pretentious, one but you will have be witness to the exposition of the process. If you are lucky the kid is a Talking Heads fan.

Well, I'm aware that rock music is a many-faceted genre and I admit not having read the whole thread.

I was simply going by your first post, which listed bands like Fleet Foxes, Elbow and Beach House. Would you say that these are closer to "rock music" than the examples I posted? Also, isn't Elbow one of the most sentimental bands ever? ;)

no offense. I’m not sure why we like that list of bands but don’t both like the bands you listed. Different strokes I guess.

Elbow is fuckin awesome and still kicking ass. Their recent album “Little Fictions” is so good. Have you heard it? Sounds awesome too.

X2 on Elbow, what a fantastic band! :) I've been following them and of course have heard “Little Fictions”.

They have a new live album out this year, an acoustic performance, which I think is awesome, too.

Cool I’ll check that out. They deserve much more popularity than they’ve ever gotten. Very strange band in this way. Possibly because people see them as a lesser Radiohead? I don’t know I’ve read this comparison a lot but I see them as completely different bands. Just sharing a bit of a certain sound.
