I just got back from a business trip. The point of the license is to keep derivative or future works from being patented by some douchebag so no one else can use it.

There was some concern about this with the changstar mods, so we didn't want this to be a potential issue.

I will post on HF to explain.

Matt is crying for help from the mods Marv. I think everything will be deleted anyway.

On second thought nope, not going to wade in there. Nicklikesmusic kindly removed the post instead of attributing. HF mods should have done something by now.

As a reminder to HF readers out there: We are not trying to control content. We don't even care if people make money of the mod or derivative works. Our main concern is that someone would patent the work to keep it for only themselves. While a Creative Commons license is not a patent; it at least provides some level of protection against someone filing a patent for the mod as a unique idea of their own. This concern is a lot more real than most people realize.

Adding to what Marv mentioned. past mod communities and efforts have taught us that these things spread and become impossible for new people to follow. By trying to keep new developments free and keeping reference to the origin of various mods and techniques, we can make sure people know that there is a place to go to get really easy to follow instructions and the latest on various mods.

A bunch of folks have been in communication with me and we're going to create easy to follow instructions for EVERYTHING and launch in "versions". As the community contributes more and we iterate/evolve the mods, we can keep things sane and update the first post of every thread with links and information.

First of: I'm a f'ing idiot. First 11 PM I realised that the shure tips had arrived. Didn't expect them to come for another few days and thus I hadn't bought an fresh blade to use for this. So in the middle of the freaking night I start to cut the shure tips using a dull kitchen knife, they end up uneven...EVERY TIME, but I'm stubborn. (As stubborn as you can get, believe me.) "The next one will be even" I keep telling myself until I run out of tips. Then I decide to insert the least uneven tips into my HD800 which was terrifying, clearly I like these headphones too much to mod them. But I have to say, this mod kicks ass, well done Sorrodje! This is the best I've ever heard this headphone.

For what it's worth I can't hear any uneven matching as a result of uneven resonators using a frequency sweep and careful listening. But the screen is bulking slightly so I will just order some more shure tips and remove them for now... bloody moron...God.

Edit: thinking about it bulge is probably the correct term, not bulk. Meh.

I just did the mod. Weirdly enough, it's almost like i hear sibilance in places i didn't hear before like on the T's and even on the F's sometimes. I highly think there's a chance that it's psychological but i thought it would kill sibilance. The biggest effect is that the bass has more impact now which is nice but i was really wanted to kill the "metallic sound" of the HD800

I think my shure tips were still too big after cutting, and i think they touch the driver. Do you guys think that it's maybe the issue? i was hoping that all sibilance and "metallicness" would be gone after the mod but it doesn't seem so in my case

EDIT : Well, it seems it was half psychological, half true. The sibilance was not more present, but still high and after fidling with the foam, it seems to be better now. There is still a lot of sibilance, but it's better

I totally understand the idea of making a product to get more consistent results, and i would buy it even if it wouldn't improve the actual mod i have by much. Good work @sorrodje and everyone

EDIT 2 : After some testing, there is added sibilance around the 10 / 14 k region. I don't know exactly where, but i found after playing on the eq that lowering the 12k did help with the weird sibilance that i was having with the mod. 6k seems to be better though, which is sad cause that was my main issue before.

So now i'm kinda stuck between struggling with 10/14k sibilance and slight 6 k sibilance with great bass, or 6k sibilance and slight 10/14k sibilance with not as great bass, and unfortunately the latter wins because the unmodded 6k sibilance sounds "more localized" and still pierces my hear on most of the songs but is far less bothersome, while the modded "around 10/14k" sibilance seems to be "wider" and basically makes every song sibilant and unpleasant to hear

No need Marv, the thread has been pruned silently, as expected.

    Okay : Here's my last resonator :

    IMG_1699.jpg
    Felt + creatology . Outer diameter 14mm , depth 7mm (5mm felt + 2mm creato ) . inner diameter of the felt : 10mm , inner diameter of the creato ring : 6mm

Trust me , I tried different material ( rubber , paper , open cell foam) with different specs and the best I measured thus far is the one described above. Don't hesitate to propose some other material though.

    How-to :

Good tool to do that work:

    IMG_1680.jpg IMG_1681.jpg

    - Choose the 14mm and 6mm punches and mount it on the tool :

    IMG_1682.jpg IMG_1683.jpg IMG_1684.jpg

    - Then you have the tool to cratology foam with good outer and inner diameters :

    - 14mm and 10 mm punches for the felt :

    IMG_1690.jpg

    - Cut the appropriate ring in the 5mm sheet of adhesive felt ( the one you put unter chairs feets)

    IMG_1691.jpg IMG_1692.jpg

    - Remove the plastic of the adhesive face (I let the felt around the 10mm puncher in order the felt ring can circular)

    IMG_1693.jpg

    - stick the creatology ring on the Felt ring:

    IMG_1694.jpg IMG_1696.jpg IMG_1697.jpg

    - Put the New SuperDupont Resonator in your HD800 . Creatology flush to the top of the hole.

    IMG_1698.jpg

    - Done.

    Measurements :

    - FR ( with the bunch of raw takes)

    CREATO+FELT RESONATOR FR.jpg

    - FR compared :

SD FELT+CREATO RESONATOR FR Compared .jpg

Stock HD800 in red, Tip mod in green, Felt+Creato in Yellow, HD800S in grey.

The last Superdupont resonator is still - 3db @6khz but 4 Khzz is better so the Gap between 4 and 6khz is improved, which is my opinion our primary goal. Felt + creato improves the 8 khz as well . so the 6 khz sticks less compared to 4 and 8 khz. High treble range is "improved" as well. To my ears ( 45 years old though) that's not problematic at all but for younger ears maybe it's a draw back... i didn' find any improvements in Subs... I think more and more my first measurements could be unreliable in that area...

The most important point is that those results are consistent so we now can DIY the resonator and it always provides the same good result whereas results are somewhat hazardous with tips cutted to random dimensions.

    CSD :

    SD FELT+CREATO RESONATOR CSD.jpg

slight reduction of the 6khz ringing whereas my measurements of the Shure tips showed no improvement in that area.

    Spectrogram :

    SD FELT+CREATO RESONATOR Spectrogram.jpg

    Distorsion :

    SD FELT+CREATO RESONATOR Disto.jpg

Achille's heel of the mod : See the Sub bass distorsion explosion. Nothing I can notice by ears though but that's a bad effect.

I can't give subjective impressions. i'm too involved so highly biased. I can build a bunch of those resonators for braves though :)

Next step : 7mm hole in the creato instead of 6mm and findind a way to use thinner ring of felt ( Still 14 mm outer diameter but mabe 12mm inner diameter) .. probably some other material than felt as well.

    Is this the future?!? :)

What kind of felt are you using? I'm going to have to order some if the measurements and listening tests hold up

Time will tell Zero, but I'm in awe of the work that Sorrodje has done since our first discussion. Really cool stuff here.

Me too. Just need confirmation from him before I buy a $200 hole punch set like he did :)

If this measures well, I might see if folks want to wait for me to cut some of these and send with their mod kits.

@zerodeefex : 5 mm adhesive felt to use under furniture feet. you see what I mean ? this http://www.amazon.com/MONSTER-MASTE...TF8&qid=1454169530&sr=8-1&keywords=felt+sheet should be good.

http://www.amazon.com/Mayhew-66010-Metric-Hollow-Punch/dp/B003PSUNX8 this set should be fine. Fortunately I paid mine 60$ from Boehm.fr.

My first attempt was with different material but maybe not as easy to source everywhere in the world. my purpose is still to obtain something easy to DIY with easy to find material and somewhat easy to industrialize if needed.

btw. I'm laughing at myself considering how much effort it needs to cut 3db @6khz wheread it's so easy to do it with an EQ .

I think instead of renaming the mod, we should just rename sorrodje to Super Dupont Resonator.

Excellent job @sorrodje if you need test subjects, I'll volunteer, I've butchered my HD800 already so many times with opening and closing haha. What I can also do is send you my mods which @OJneg did as well. It might help with the complete balance.

Also maybe cork + foam would do the trick? I've got a ton left to send you, since you're doing so much spending already. Shipping is very cheap from here.

Don't forget to try the cosmetic sponges. They work wonders with high frequencies.

@spoony : ah yes. Good idea. I didn't see what you were talking about the first time you proposed it. open cell foam I used thus far brings no good things compared to felt.
