Finished with Tung Oil. Then a bit of polyurethane.

Sound was excellent. Midrange had supreme clarity and ease (no xover in the way). Slight upperbass funkiness (horn sound coming through). Surprisingly good midbass for driver size. Driver has 6k peak that was too fatiguing for me; ultimately had to use a touch of EQ. Good (not great) treble extension. I very much miss the midrange coherence and plankton. Something I haven't been able to replicate with my multi-way projects since, or most headphones for that matter.

@ohshitgorillas - Nice setup! I heard some Martin Logan electrostatic speakers once and those are the best I have ever heard. I am really curious about Magnepan speakers since they look similar but have a much lower price. Plus I like flat panels much better then boxes.

Maggies are extremely finnicky with positioning, I've never heard estats but I hear they're far less picky. I think I'm honing in on the "perfect" placement, but god damn they're picky about it!

I've considered trading them out for some traditional-style speakers, but then again I'm a whore for a natural and realistic tone/timbre in music reproduction and Maggies do that better than most traditional speakers I think.

They radiate from the backside so I assume they are dipole speakers and therefore need some room behind the speaker. Judging from your pic it seems like they are way too close to the walls and need to bit more distance. However this is based on my limited knowledge from what I have read about dipoles so don't take my word for it. The Martin Logans I heard are curved so I don't know if that makes positioning easier.

They've moved since that photo was taken, but they've come out from the wall even further (about 3-4 ft now) and they're a little closer together. It's crazy how much moving them side to side even by a few inches can affect the soundstage, but by far the biggest improvement in sound quality came from moving them closer together. They're starting to sound less like two speakers and more like a single coherent image, but not quite there yet 100%.

This was the last speaker setup I had. That was 3 years ago and since then almost all the pieces in the setup was sold off.

This is NOT my setup, but I took some pictures earlier today when a friend and I were auditioning the Zesto Eros monoblocks together at his place.

He's also in the Marten speaker cult I see. You should try to recruit Ohhgourami I think he's vulnerable. He's flirting with magnepans though

Those aren't Magnepans in the back though. What are they? Look like speakers, but I've never seen anything that thin when it comes to planar or electrostatics.

Those are just some room treatment acoustic panels. I placed them there to even the gap behind a little bit. Helped center the image even further in that setup.

Yes, the Marten cult is dense around me. Not known as well in the USA, but the few people that own them know each other. We keep learning on ways to push our personal sonic envelope with these speakers. Dr. Findley is a new owner as well ;)

I pushed Ohhgourami towards the Magnepan 3.7i. With his current electronics, it will be a perfect speaker to just "drop in" his system and get fantastic sound. He will be a very VERY happy man, especially after I've learnt some of his sonic preferences.

    Cheers!

Cleaned up my set up a bit, I need a new rack. Getting the B&W's closer into a better triangle really improved the imaging. Spring needs to get here so i can paint those ugly MDF boxes.

    cheers

Not my setup, but one I listen to as frequently as my own setup almost. Those speakers are the Marten Coltrane Tenors...stupendous sound...I simply cannot describe :)

    He is, big time :)
But the system is surpassed by his sheer amount and quality of records. I'll take those records over the system any day...he has been collecting records seriously for more than 45 years! Wish I was born earlier.

My fe83en speakers are in the dining room for holiday music duties

    IMG_0210.JPG

Driven by a Topping amp and old iPod as source. First thing I did to test is pull up a YouTube vid. I've been listening to my HD600s a lot so I wasn't expecting the speakers to sound nearly as good but they really sounded like crap. The sound was really boxy and muffled. I don't remember them sounding nearly this bad.

I haven't listened to these in awhile so maybe they've always been this bad. However before I only really listened to them in a near field arrangement on my desktop. I don't think the stone walls are doing any favors either. My TABAQ and HD600 that get regular duty have a bit more bass, so maybe I just miss the bass? After checking the YouTube vid with headphones I noticed that the recording was quite bad and the speakers amplified the negatives quite a bit. With good music it sounded much better but still hear a lot that shouldn't be there. I bet it's room reflections. Wondering if I should feed it with my gainclone. Gah! I'll obsess about this after the holidays.

Edit: crisis averted. Shitty Recordings sound way shittier but good stuff still sounds good.

got no pictures yet but.... EV HR9040 + altec 291 = some of the smoothest and most addictive sound ever. got the 291's set-up today on my EV HR9040 horns and while i was expecting some good sound, i did not expect them to sound this damn good. so ultra smooth, clear and clean. i know some would complain bout it's air extension since a large format driver can only do so much but, i find it's top-end and air response insanely good and super smooth with no sign of glaring and grain.

i'm really loving the ev hr9040+altec 291-16k combo strapped on top of some jbl 4648 bass bins and using some jbl 3160 network boxes. tomorrow i might try to take a pic. i been really busy and haven't been feeling like myself past couple days so, i been slow on a lot of things lately.
