I was going to own one for the office, one for home. I do prefer the hd600 for classical strings, hd650 for most everything else.

Techboy, that 600 was gone in a hurry! The only place you can get it now is through ebay and that price is ridiculous.

PG: My answer is no. I have both (unmodded) and prefer the 600 for its neutrality.

I agree with Koth. I could be happy with a 650 as well though. But I personally don't feel the need to own both.

Some find HD600 more neutral, some HD650. HD600 sounds too elevated in upper-mids to be neutral for me. HD650 is better despite a bit more bass and a hair less treble. Some will hear differently. I like the approach of trying both and selling the one you like the least. :)

I've been going back and forth between angled pleather, angled memory foam, and flat memory foam HM5 pads over the last week. I've concluded that the angled memory foam pads are superior, since they don't change the tonality or frequency response (to my ears) but do give the soundstage more depth. Flat memory foam pads are the roomiest and therefore win the award for most comfortable. Angled pleather pads take from the highs and give to the lows, and have a more congested soundstage than the angled memory foam...although if that's what you want, you could do a lot better with the HD650 instead.

I do recommend the angled HM5 pads, though beware you're going to have to cannibalize your current pads to get them on.

I tried out the black-driver HD650 for 2 months, then picked up an HD600 to compare, and now I've sold the former. The HD600 is indeed a bit more forward/shouty, but I'll take this over the overly thick sounding mid-bass to fundamentals (low mids) region of the HD650. Some things sounded quite wonderful on the HD650 - operatic vocals or jazz was very enjoyable, but that was about it. The shoutiness of the HD600 becomes more apparent in opera, but as I said, this is a flaw I could live with, whereas the thick HD650 sound made many tracks plain unenjoyable.

Talking about HD600s and HD580s, below are measurements of Bill's modded HD580s vs 2 stock HD580s and 2 stock HD600.

    Comparo.png

It seems to me that Bill was able reduce presence in the 3-5 kHz region successfully.

Measurements were taken @ the Anaheim meet 2016...

How much was the HD 600 for when it was listed?

I have to say that these are my favourite cans that I own. Just so great for long listening sessions. Easy on my tinnitus too.

listening with fresh pads and like what i'm hearing. bass has cleaned up with more detail and digs a bit deeper. i'm not a bass head. mids are perfect. i can see where people who are more sensitive to forward upper mids could find the HD600 a little 'hot' at times. i find myself listening a click lower on the knob compared to listening with the older compressed pads. sure, sometimes i wish for a little more 'air', but it's an easy trade-off considering everything else the HD600 offers at the price.

i think my abusive love/hate decade old marriage with the AKG K7xx is finally over. everything i throw at the HD600 just sounds damn great.

Yes... come to the darkside! I just wish that new pads weren't so expensive and a little easier to source.

When I bought the Senn HD 600 back in November it quickly jumped ahead of various AKG K/Q-- models as a personal favorite. And while I still love the Senn, since I paired the AKG K7xx with my Liquid Carbon, that is now my favorite pairing. The honeymoon may yet wear off, but currently it has replaced the HD 600 as my go-to can.

Definitely don't sell them. You'll only end up replacing them again. :p

Ha. Zero intention of selling. They are great headphones and I will definitely revert to using them. Unfortunately I don't think the LC is a good match for them, so need to find an amp with better synergy.

One thing I found bizarre about the HD600 was the upper range response. I thought this headphone was supposed to be relaxed, slightly lush, maybe even a bit veiled? What I got was a tizzy sporadic mess with soft midbass and very little subbass response. Soundstage was alright, nothing special. Plenty of resolution to go around but the FR sounded so off to me.

Maybe it was my amp making things sound soft (Asgard v1)?

I should probably give it a second chance but the bass rolloff really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Meh. Maybe HD650 instead.

HD650 will fix that tizzy aspect you heard. I have found I don't care for the HD6X0 from the vast majority of solid state amps I've heard. They tend to make them sound lean, dynamically flat, brighter than usual, etc. Paired with a really powerful, dynamic sounding tube amp, they sound very, very different.

Would you say that the Valhalla 2 is the best amp tube or ss for the HD 6XX under $600?
