There's nothing wrong with the JBL 306s and using Class D amps to hit a price point. I'm listening to a $50 Fosi class D amp right now in my main system while my ChiFi JLHood amp gets exchanged. It sounds really nice for what it is with only a little bit of harshness in the upper mids.

Amir is pulling the same shit he did with headphones that he did with speakers.

The problem arises when someone claims, like ASR denizens, that class d can compete with class ab when price and form factor are not an issue. None of the current modules can.

Okay, I see. So that was more just criticizing Amir's evaluation of them rather than your own evaluation of them. I definitely misunderstood. My apologies.

The whole ASR headphone reviewing thing bugs me as Amir (blessed be his name) is clearly trying to set himself up as an authority in all things audio, while ignoring all who have laid the groundwork. Take someone like Tyll, who spent years upon years trying to perfect methodology to measure headphones and then interpret those measurements. Amir has no public self-doubt about his measurements or himself. It comes across as pure ego and not very scientific at all, and a lot of would be audiophiles will buy into his appeal to self Authority. Just plain bad for the hobby.

Unrelated, Tyll is a different breed of professional. You dont get too many who are as modestly thorough and open in this game. Never be enough Tyll's out there to counteract all of the Amir's in the world.

Tyll is the kind of guy you could say "I think you're wrong about this." to, and a month or two later see him publish a deep dive where he admits surprise at what he found. And then he'd probably thank you for bringing it up because it was interesting. And then he would rattle off a thing or two worth trying in the future to find out more. Thats something I really enjoyed about his work. Part of what made him an authority was his willingness to walk people through his own learning process, so everyone could share in elevating their own understanding of things. Guys been out there teaching people how to fish.

Guys like that... the world of reviewing doesnt actually appeal to, in a lot of ways. Thats what makes them able to be so good at it. It's because they dont care about the recognition or any of the meta side of being in a position where people listen to you. So they can say "Dont just take this from me." and mean it.

Readers love black and white. More certainty. ASR offers this.

RTings offers this too - and one of the reasons I will mostly disregard their numeric ratings when it comes to TVs, but instead look at a few measurements that are of interest to me - that correlate best to what I would personally sum up as good performance.

I prefer leaving things in shades of grey or take the stance of "figure out yourself what this means to you". However, I realize this may not be the best way. Maybe I will have numeric scores based on an algorithmic analysis of FR and CSD. Hey at least this would be better than pink panther poses which are subjectively variably based on objective measurements.

Personally I think each review or impression should be concluded by an interpretive dance. Really leave it up to the reader to figure it out.

It would still be more telling than ASR SINAD leaderboard graph.

I prefer to present data, some opinions and let readers use their critical thinking skills to determine how a component fits or not with their personal preferences. I detest the notion of telling people what to think. That is the principal difference between forums. Some wish to be told what to think, some are capable of thinking for themselves. I'd rather attract the latter to this forum.

Literally, the whole "contrast is the absolute most important spec on a television set" has given us really shitty LCD televisions with decent contrast numbers.

ASR has been advertising "A Star is Born" 2-hour interview extravaganza with Amir. There is no way in hell I could sit through a 2-hour interview with anyone, even if it was the most interesting person in the world. The sliver lining is that the sheer volume of content provides us with a very good insight into Amir's personality.

Anyway, the segment in which he talks about SBAF is at the 35-minute mark:

If you tried to start the video at a specific time, I don’t think you can do that here (I tried before as well). The video just starts from the beginning (at least on my iphone), so you’ll have to just mention the specific time.

Wow. I'm happy Amir was around to right the ship over at Schiit. Who knows what kind of garbage dacs we might have floating around if it wasn't for him.

The guy who starts out mentioning he worked at Microsoft. It’s one of his favorite things to say because it’s how he wows people with supposed credibility.
