Which invoices and other paperwork do I need to bring in exactly? Currently I dont have anything in hand. Should I wait for the UPS guy to come over, take a picture of whatever paper there is and then ask him to bring the package back for me so I could retrieve it later?

Huh, I thought you already have the invoice that shows you the 80 dollar brokerage fee?

Best to call or email UPS that you want to self clear, or if UPS the guy arrives, refuse the delivery and tell him that you want to do a self clear. He should give you the necessary invoice. And UPS should email you the rest of the paperwork.

Like I said before, call or email them a few times if they're taking too long. You gotta be persistent.

In the UPS tracking page, there is a link to pay for all the charge and when i click there this table appear. Not sure if it qualifies as invoice though:

But yeah, I plan to get more information when the UPS guy got here too. Called UPS earlier and they were not that helpful (on purpose perhaps), will try again now.

You called 1-800-742-5877 and pressed 3 I'm guessing?

They probably need the invoice number, which you will get when the ups guy arrives. Call or email ups after you get the invoice.

Finally things seem to be going somewhere. I called 1-888-592-6188 and got an actually useful person on the line this time, who tell me that I indeed can clear it myself when UPS sends me the paperwork (thanks the sassy dude earlier this morning who mentioned nothing about this)

So finger cross that once I receive all the paperwork, it will be smooth sailing with CBSA.

That is how it is supposed to work but seldom does. I have gone this road more than one time, so be careful. Most likely they will not send you anything, just another invoice for the same amount. And be careful with refusing delivery, they may send the item back to the sender.
The way it usually goes is that if they have not send you the the self clearing paperwork before you get the item, you can still receive it without paying anything, make another support call and insist on self clearing. UPS process brakes at this point and, after a number of support calls, they will just waive the fee and you can make credit card payment for the Government charges only.
The bottom line is whatever they do, do not pay. I just call them again and politely explain that they are supposed to send the paperwork, and if they did not it is not my problem, and then I will be happy to pay any Gov fees. It is stupid in cumbersome but it works. What is good it is easy to get them on the phone.

Ah nothing you wouldn't expect from how companies treat their "valued customers" isnt it?!

Thank you for the tips. I'm "supposed" to get those paper work within the next 2 hours...

So if I understood you correctly: if i have not received the paperwork by tomorrow afternoon/evening (when the delivery is expected), I need to call them again and hopefully the fees will be cancelled by then?

If not, I will insist with the delivery guy when he shows up that I only want to pay the government fees. And if nothing happens by then, I make sure the guy get the package back to a UPS pick up location and not the sender instead?

Delivery guy will leave you the item without you paying anything, and it takes more than one call to get fee cancelled

I did not realize that self clear is an option. Depending on the item that might be a viable option.

In my past experience, UPS is the worst for brokerage fees. Fedex usually charges $10 which is totally worth it for clearance. Although I just had a shipment from Fedex Ground where they charged me a UPS-like amount of fees. There is a separate chart for Fedex Ground brokerage fees and it is much higher than regular Fedex.

Wow that sounds almost too good to be true. I got 2 calls in already so hopefully that's a good start, if need be.

Out of the US's big 3 (private), UPS has always been my least favorite. Dont think I will try using them ever again in my life except for some profound changes.

Me too. I will actively avoid buying from places that only use UPS. I wasn't sure if they had improved in the last couple years since I've used UPS, but it doesn't sound like it.

UPS are easily the worst. Fortunately for me, it is a short drive to their office for paperwork, then CBSA to self-clear. As for Fedex, if you open an account with them and keep a credit card on file, they waive some portion of the fees. So, in addition to better service overall, you can save a couple dollars too.

And like @wormcycle has mentioned, it's never that straightforward isn't it?

I was supposed to get my invoices from them ~ 10pm last night and 12hours later there is still nothing. Delivery is supposed to be schedule for today so I guess all I can do now is a few more calls and best case scenario, fees will be waived.

An update: I just completed the cycle for the Pi2AES UPS delivery. Received the package weeks ago, before that I requested the self clearing paperwork but have not received any. I did not pay at the door, gave the driver a copy of my email. Called UPS support again, was told that they will send me new invoice with the fee waived. The invoice arrived, the brokerage fee was till there.
I called support again and politely explained the situation, the support person waived the fee I paid taxes only and I am done.
It is very important to be patient and not get upset with their silly ways to coerce you to pay. They have to go through the moves, for me it is like a routine.

    Interesting.

In the past when I have ordered Priority International from Fedex, they usually give me an automated call letting me know what I owe in GST and brokerage fees and I either pay online or on the mobile terminal the drivers carry. When my Jot arrived last summer, I just got a voice message telling me my scheduled delivery date. When the guy came to the door I asked what I owed and he said nothing. I found that odd. Months have gone by since and no bill or anything from Fedex. So a few days ago my BF2 arrived. It was slow arriving with the crazy weather down south, but same deal. No bill, no brokerage fee or taxes.

Maybe with COVID they have decided to waive the brokerage or hidden it in the shipping costs and let customers deal with CRA on their own for taxes? These packages still go through customs so maybe I will get a bill from the feds down the line? I'm not complaining, but it is weird and certainly not like what I am used to.

    Anyone else notice anything similar?

Yes, same on my BF2 which arrived Jan 27. Same shipping method as you.

Normally I'd have gotten a love note (or call) from Fedex by now. Driver said I didn't have anything to pay.

Not sure what's going on either; I'm prepared and expecting to pay something somewhere down the line but no idea when or what. Happy to wait until FedEx ask however :)

That wasn't my experience with my Jot 2. It arrived in mid January and I got the call with the tax/fees due.

Also, I used Fedex Ground on a shipment from ZMF late last year, and got a surprise invoice a few weeks later with some UPS-level fees on it. If you look at Fedex's fee chart, Ground definitely has more costs compared to Priority or whatever their other tiers are.

I have simply given up trying to buy anything from the US at this point. I have even had shipments stopped because they did not believe the value that was declared even after I showed them the ebay listing and paypal receipts. Back when I was still getting stuff for reviews, they even stopped gear from coming through that was declared as "manufacturing sample", and the only way I could get it was to pay full retail on a product that wasn't even on the market yet, then "apply for reimbursement" of taxes afterwards but still be out all the import fees. Ugh. I suspect my name in blacklisted somehow.

Sucks to hear about the issues you guys have been having. I've never had any trouble having things shipped from the US. I've usually only used USPS since the import fees are the lowest when they come through USPS and Canada Post. Never had any issues with damage or lost parcels (touch wood).

I've used UPS a few times recently and the option I used (I think Express of some kind) didn't have the crazy import fees that ground shipping has (perhaps it's built into the shipping cost already). UPS did deliver one parcel to the wrong address and were never able to figure out what happened to it. Luckily my neighbor dropped it off to me. USP didn't seem overly concerned so I skipped waiting on hold for 1-2 hours (early part of COVID) to speak to someone for the 2nd and 3rd time after already having spent 2 hours waiting to let them know it was missing the first time!
