I've been using the ASUS VG249Q for the past 5 months, and I've been very happy with it and would happily recommend it. I've also seen a lot of recommendations for the AOC 24G2, which is usually cheaper. It's the same panel as the ASUS, but the AOC has more vibrant colors, which I'm not a fan of, and also has a slightly better response time (which I can't really notice anyway, and was less important to me).

The 24G2 is sold out everywhere I've looked so I do presume many others share your high opinions of it, haha. It retails for about PHP11,000/~USD228 on my end which is quite within my budget, but the problem is it's vapor at the moment. Will be keeping an eye out for it, but not a fan of super vibrant colours either.

The Asus is listed north of USD410 on my end which is... a bit above what I was hoping to spend. Sigh, brand names do charge a premium. Still, if it's really that good then I could maybe trawl the used market. Could just be scarcity and scalpers inflating the price so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    Thanks!

The Acer Nitro XF243Y is the best one of the bunch. Unless you can find an Asus 25'' 1080p, 144hz, but it's next to impossible. I have seen the 240hz VG259QM go for ~$250 before if you want to future proof yourself a bit. Added bonus is that the panel is higher quality than the 144hz one. But this is USD prices, which will probably not apply to you as much unless you can save money somehow on importing one

What I find surprising about living in a poorer country is how much more expensive certain things are. Really says a lot, that.

Thanks Paco! I'm kinda not willing to risk importing one given how things are lately but if I see one of the Acer Nitros pop up on the used market for an obtanium price I'll likely jump :)

The VG259QM is about $435 so big oof there, but honestly it's still obtanium. Just will be a while longer putting together the funds and pushing a certain amp further back, but it could be worse— I could be hunting for GPUs haha

Is there anything specific you'd suggest for 4K and gaming?

Depends, how many kidneys do you have?

In all seriousness, there's not a lot of options. If you're looking for an HDR experience, you're stuck with half-assed HDR600 attempts, 43'' monitors with passable local dimming, or just giving up and getting an OLED.

If you don't care about HDR, the best choice, bar none, is the LG 27GN850-B. It's the only LG nanocell IPS panel that doesn't go below 1:1000 contrast and it has local dimming.

Personally, 1440p monitors are kind of the best choice atm. 240hz 1440p monitors have hit the market, and the normal 144-180hz 1440p ips monitors have reached faster-than-tn speeds. If you don't care about 240hz (most don't,) good 1440p monitors start at $350 nowadays. 4K still requires a RTX 3090/3080, which are kind of scarce and nonexistant for a lot of people. 1440p just needs a 3070, even with games like Cyberpunk. Even the VA Panels, at least in Samsung's case, have sorta caught up with the normal IPS and aren't completely horrible now.

As far as Ultrawides are concerned, the cheapest option is one of the best ones. Acer Nitro XV340CK. There's not a lot of good choices though...the large majority of them are riddled with QC issues, compromises, large-cost-for-not-much, ect.

Anyway, for your original question, LG 27GN850-B is really about it. Unless you go with an OLED (which means you have to be fine with 48'' on a desk,) the 4k monitor has too many compromises.

What are some cheap planars that are somewhat decent for up to $500?

If I enjoy the Jot 2 loaner for what it is, then I might consider doing another setup in my living room where I'm using the XLR outs of BF2 to feed a Jot 2 and screw around with that on planars and other random crap when I want to listen to something else that isn't a DNA Starlett at times. For fun of course...noting serious.

If you're patient and have good timing, the b-stock LCD2-Classic goes on sale for under $500. Audeze may offer them around holidays like July 4 but I got mine on Black Friday. They sell only a few of them, though, and they go pretty quickly. Still, the LCD2-Classic pairs well with the Jot 2.

I had the LCD2C and I enjoyed it a lot. I think I sold it since I got bored with the sound. At the time I was using it more and more and that is kind of the problem. Nowadays I dunno if I want to trust Audeze.

I also made the post to get the lay of the land on cheaper planars to see what I should consider (if I decide to do this route).

Now I know that clearly not enough :D

Thanks, I can work with that. Originally I wanted something suitable for gaming and also wide enough to provide some extra working space. After what you wrote I googled that Acer. It seems to have pretty much everything I'm after these days and, although it's still pricey, doesn't cost an arm and leg yet.

    Much appreciated!

Any recommendations on a decent 1m USB Type A to Type B cable for PC to Schiit Multibit DAC? I'm not a cable guy so my priorities are price, shielding, durability, and aesthetics (in that order). Looking to spend between $50-100 CAD.

As a follow up to my last question: On the Hifiman stuff, HE4XX or HE5XX?

Still researching to see if I wanna play around with this stuff, not too sure. Might aim for another LCD2C down the road in the future.

This is not the question you asked but I'd also recommend considering going with a Pi2AES instead for about double your budget. Especially if you have a higher-end Schiit DAC, I found switching from USB to Pi2AES made a big difference for a Gungnir Multibit (A2). The improvement was not as dramatic for the Modi Multibit, YMMV.

I should have specified, I'm using the addon multibit card in my Lyr 3 so unfortunately I am limited to USB input only.

I don't have the context of your last post, but I would go with neither. The Sundara is the best hifiman headphone in that price range, and you can get it for $299 openbox. Sometimes even lower. Though, I would skip the orthos altogether in this price range and get a HD6XX.

If you're saving for the LCD 2C, you may as well save the bit extra for the actual LCD 2 or just forgo that and get an Ananda. Ananda is a lot better of a headphone as a whole than the LCD 2C for less (like $550 openbox). The 2C, even with the velour pads, gives too much up to stand up to the actual LCD 2.

Whats the reasonable tolerance for a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor?

Im testing the components shipped with a head-amp kit, they're testing 85, 86, 90. I have better tolerances available, just wondering if it doesnt matter.

If these are just bypass caps -- that is, if they're to be placed very close to ICs and connected between the IC power and ground pins -- then it doesn't matter. 85 nF will work just as well as 100.
