Having an 18" sub two feet from you certainly adds to the visceral enjoyment of the music
Forget BWC, we're gonna need a new crotchwoofer category.

Haha, definitely. I don't have it set loudly at all though. I'm more about just filling out the low end and giving the music a bit more realism rather than demolishing the house, which this certainly accomplishes better than my other subwoofer (Tannoy TS2.12.) It really sounds effortless.

    Hey Guys,

I picked up my new speakers this morning. Magico A3’s. They were for sale locally at a dealership that took them on a trade in. I went and listened to them last week, and really enjoyed them. They are very different from my Wilson Sophia 2’s. They seem a bit more detailed in the mids and highs, and actually easier going in the highs which surprised me. They are a bit warmer than the Wilsons, not by lots, but a bit. They are more “musical” sounding (though I know that description annoys people,) and less linear. I’ve got them paired with my Funk Audio 18.0SE that I also purchased a couple weeks ago used. Very nice punchy low end, not overbearing, though I suppose I could shake the house apart if I wanted too.

The Magicos are a real surprise. I thought they would be brighter than they are, and more harsh in the highs.

Lol, It is speaker cable, but yeah, not fancy, just plain copper. I'll maybe try some fancy cables eventually, but being honest, I've always heard bigger differences from changing components (especially the transducer, be it headphones or speakers,) and I need a dedicated amp and dac for my speaker set up, before worrying about cable differences, if there are even any to be found.

Congrats on the new speakers, @ufospls2!

Can't find it now, but there was a review of one of the newer Magico speakers that had measurements and explained what you're hearing. If I remember correctly, Magico used some extra crossover parts for the tweeter, eliminating breakup at high frequencies and sloping down the frequency response, so the newer Magico speakers are much warmer and smoother than the previous ones, according to that review and the measurements.

Our drink outside because it's warm and engineering is stressful setup. Goodwill speakers with a Craigslist amp with a box fan for cooling IMG_20210424_154102962_HDR.jpg

Got a great deal on a pair of REL T/5i speakers yesterday from a local with grumpy downstairs neighbors. As I'll be moving to a ground floor apartment pretty soon, I was happy to take them off his hands. Haven't spent much time on the tuning/placement yet, but they're already doing a great job supporting the maggies' lower end. Played a little with the crossover and they snapped into place neatly. I'm a little shocked at how loud the subs are-- I'm running them just south of 9 o'clock to match the LRS.

Ignore the desk, that's as tidy as I get.

@supertransformingdhruv, what LPF frequency and slope are you using to mesh with the Maggies? Was it easy to get phase correctly set?

    • I've only got a 0 or 180 switch for phase, so I've left it at 0. 180 sounded off, so I guess that was easy enough.
    • I tuned the crossover by ear pretty roughly to around 90 Hz. Will spend more time on it with a measurement mic at the new place, but I move in less than a month so I'm not putting in that effort yet.
    • I don't get to chose the slope on these.

I don't know what i was thinking with my old setup and those GIK panels. Everything looked way to busy with it.
I think i might try to hide the SPL unit under the desk too. (I have a woo wa22 coming too.. which i need to find room for.)
The wife is not impressed by any of this.

    UPDATE:
yeah, too busy. I'm going to put the PL back on my FS speakers.
I also broke out my dark secret - i really like the Schiit Vidar. (mr flabby bass).. and i can fit in under my desk. (i tried schiit aegir monoblock but my desktop speakers triggered protection.. maybe to much 4ohm?)
I'm using the SLP as a PRE.
Now i have room for the Woo headphone amp too. So win all around.

An SPL Phonitor is definitely something to be seen as well as heard!

yeah.. being that 90% for me getting it was the meters :)
Everything shoved in the one area bugs me. There is a shelf under the desk that is hogged by a i'm-pretty-sure-it-is-doing-nothing AudioQuest Niagara 1200.

Project for the weekend. Move anything around.. make a mess.. then end up back to where i started.
Maybe move the speaker closer to the monitor and put it on the desk? *shrug*

Cornwall IV's with custom linen grills required for approval of installation in our living room/common area. They're still breaking in but are already more or less exactly what I expected them to be after exhaustive research, for both better and worse. Ollie hates them and is only head-down & reasonably chill because I was playing an ECM record when I took this pic. IMG_0290.jpg

Hey Folks. I'm very new here, but have been having a lot of fun lurking. Here is my current setup: JBL590 speakers, JBL A120P Sub, Jadis Orchestra amp, Denafrips Ares ii DAC, Pro-Ject tube box S2 preamp, Drop+AT turntable w/Sumiko Songbird cartridge, Sony TC-FX45 cassette deck. Various other TV stuff too. I've been really dialing everything in recently and did some room treatments (some behind the speakers). In Rainbows was spinning when I took this.

hey, @Soups! I'm wondering if those Moab's ya got there are the normal blue color or the high gloss. You've got one of the most well lit pictures of them on the web... :-D Thanks!

They are just the normal blue. The gloss paint was outside of my budget, but it sure does seem nice, but I'm also just relying on web pictures as well.

Congrats! So how do they manage in that space? I imagine you still need some stuff like a rug on that floor etc., but just roughly?
