Galileo's response to this is preserved in a museum in Florence.

Should become the new SBAF award for 'ASR science'.

Update: Confirmed by John Yang now (after he initially said it was 'simply wrong', before deleting that response and the user's post asking about it)

What the hell good is a user selectable filter that only works above 384 kHz?!?

[EDIT] I found the thread, and he is saying since the content was upsampled, the filters will only show a difference above 384 kHz. So I suppose the question is, can this result be replicated with any other sound file? Can you produce a similar result feeding it 16/44.1?

Since John Yang is now saying that the reason the filters made no difference is because I was lying and upsampling the audio, here's a quick vid to demonstrate that isn't true:

If someone would post that to ASR in response so that the lie is not left as is I'd be very grateful

Still misinformation if the filters are basically all MQA on D90-MQA and they found another way on D70s MQA.. both use AKM. Such things would be nice to know about... otherwise it's intentionally left out. Shame.

It's definitely something that should be explicit/explained in the info. Once again this company withholds information about their products. Very shady.

I would hope iFi continues with their semi-NOS approach. Personally, I think the demand for MQA is vastly overrated. We keep hearing from the manufacturers that customers are asking for this. However customer ask does not necessarily equate to customer action or sales. It's always going to be the loudest people who bitch. And in my experience having worked and consulted for various audio manufacturers: these are the people who NEVER BUY - they are the people who ask for shit, ask more random questions, and basically waste your time. The people who actually buy know what they want.

And with respect to (and also deep appreciation for) iFi: a huge selling point is their Bit-Perfect mode. Bit-Perfect is what makes iFi awesome. It's their secret sauce. I know many people on SBAF agree here. So as long as they keep offering Bit-Perfect, they can offer the MQA (minimum phase) GTFO filter or whatever and I don't care. However, as someone who has wholeheartedly recommended most of iFi line's across the board: @iFi audio, please don't ever forget that it's your Bit-Perfect filter that makes your gear special, a differentiator. It's not MQA. It's your Bit-Perfect.

The people who want MQA don't have much MQA content. They've been marketed on the fear missing out. There's not much to miss out these days with Apple and Amazon going lossless Hires.

P.S. Look what happened to Schiit's DSD DAC because everyone was bitching for it. They made it. No one bought it. Does anyone remember the name of their DSD DAC?

To be fair GTO is a great anime and a sexy car (and GTFO looks like an amazing horror co-op game), but yeah if iFi moves away from their Bit Perfect approach it does feel like a great many people will be sad; I'll at least be a bit more skeptical of their gear. Even when I knew ass-all about filters their NOS-ish approach was my go to for no other reason than it was a set-it and forget-it listening mode.

The original Micro iDSD was a device that helped me train myself to listen to filters back in 2016 or so when I got one used to power my DT880s at the time and even between how much I liked it and how personable and helpful their support has been the chance they might do away with it hardens the soft spot a whit.

Yep most people who buy audio stuff that are not educated buy things that are all inclusive. I have a friend who will only buy something based on if it has newest Bluetooth 5.2 has to do 32bit cuz it's bigger and better. Needs dsd even though they don't own a sacd or a single dsd file. In complete fear of missing out. They want future proof but don't even understand the basic concepts and what matters/what doesn't.

Thanks Marv. One thing I'll say is that Bit-Perfect is a must and is here to stay. We're very much into providing as many functional options as possible, but Bit-Perfect is one of them and critical by our standards ;)
