I think so. It's interesting to note that I have seen these in old 580s and 600s, not yet in 650s. I also haven't seen yet old 580s and 600s without these. I probably haven't bought enough yet to find out.

How'd you manage to remove the magnets without destroying the voice coil? Always wanted to roll an N52 or Alnico 5 in there.

I wish I can show you - but basically there are two ways, on the modern ones the magnet is really loose or not so tight so if you just insert a tiny hex screwdriver in the hole and push upwards it does the trick. Wiha screwdrivers are awesome because the surface is smooth so as to not damage the magnet.

The other way is to just use another really strong magnet to pull the driver magnet upwards. Slap on the magnet and pull with your hands. Surprisingly works well.

On the older units though the magnets are very very tight so I have to use the screwdriver method. The plastic enclosure for these things are polygonal rather than circular so they achieve more friction.

If you're worried about puncturing the diaphragm in the process you can blow a short burst of air into the drivers first so that the diaphragm raises upwards. That way you have more space to wiggle around inside.

Latest updates. Finally finished some pairs... a huge thank you to those who waited! I'm very sorry to have kept you waiting.
One of the pairs is not like the other.... that's the latest 580 work there, which is going on a loaner tour- coming soon to a loaner thread near you™

I'm happy with how the 580 turned out - hopefully I can work on some vintage 600 and 650s I've been hoarding up over the past months in the same way.

Clem you’re on the next batch! I’m halfway done with it. Sorry for the wait! It’s the nature of doing everything alone, and also the manufacture process.

I’m also figuring out an improvement to the design, like using metal threads for better clamp and damping and making the foam attachment piece snap-fit, so it might be possible to get those improvements in time.

Some of these have holes as big as a silver dollar, some as big as a quarter. Can you explain why some are different?

The only reason I ask is that the used JAR600 I have has full front foam.

    Thanks.

You mean…the foam? I do cut the foam same size always, but they stretch when the earpad snaps on to the cups on either end. This is probably accounting for the differences you see.

600 should have full front foam. It was decided the tuning is better that way.

I think the confusion is from the black screen 580. You can just make out the black foam at about the same diameter as the other two headphones...but its hard to see against the black screen.

    Hey everyone!
Now that I'm back home, I'm working on the cans again!
There's a slight part upgrade that's happening, so that could delay things. I'm hoping it's worth it, though.
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1S4Lld3XT15kEl9vrxo8oDpM0aqGFKyiE/view?usp=sharing
Basically I'm thinking of making the part snap-fit, it's a theory but should be better in the long run over the current system.
    Slight changes to design too.
I still have some parts work in progress so I don't think the majority of the pairs will be affected by the change!

    It's been a long while!
I made a change to the main part so that instead of 3M VHB you can use a screw to replace the foam cover.
This will ship with the last orders I've received. And aside from the pairs I'm still working on and the one-off 660S that I'm working on, I'm ending production on the JAR6X0 series. The reason is changes to personal life/surroundings, and to focus fully on the JAR800. (you read that right, 800) I'm going to probably release it in the next month or two. Thank you for all the support on the 6X0 series, it's been one hell of a ride!

The design priorities I went by were:
    1) Reducing sibilance takes highest priority (either through sheer resolving power or damping), but
    2) If it reduces soundstage, do not implement.
    3) If mids die, do not implement.
If one of the effects are too overwhelmingly compelling, consider implementing despite guidelines.

I haven't taken too long a look at how things are put together, but for older versions of the JAR650, is there a way to get updated parts now that production has ended? I got a used one that is apparently not the newest and am curious to hear what the last revisions sound like.

@ext1 I am very excited to hear JAR800. This is fantastic.

Question on JAR600: I'm waiting for a certain someone to lend me a pair. (More than one person here has told me I should get these mods.) Is there a way that JAR600 mods could continue?

    So two things on that:
    1) If I remove the part, I have to make a new one from scratch, so that means I have to start all over again. and
    2) Old isn't actually so bad. When I got the chance to listen to some of my older pairs, I found that I liked the sound a lot because as I moved around from Abu Dhabi -> NY -> Korea the way I carried out my work changed with what tools and environment I was in, and that caused a little bit of variation amongst the pairs. Of course there were many improvements along the way in the newer pairs that are not present in the old pairs, but I think there's a certain charm in the way I used to do things before.

Thank you! I'm hoping it will be great as well, talking to the appropriate people to organize a loaner tour.

But uhh.. yeah I can't physically be making both the 6x0 and the 800. Especially considering I have to move again to Abu Dhabi soon and leave behind all my tools, and start having more pressing real-life commitments, I am forced to make a choice. So I can't continue making them. Maybe later in the future when I'm able I might return to it, but for now I think it's going to be difficult. You'll have to wiggle it out of people who have it unfortunately..

Is there a difference between the mods to a 650 vs. 600? Obviously I'm not asking you to divulge anything that's proprietary, but for those with both 600 and 650, is there a way to move the damping ring/slug from one headphone to another?
